  1. Had a TV for rainy days a few boats ago but just use a laptop nowadays, much more versatile, get the right one and they are are a lot hardier when it comes to the marine environment also.

  2. Currently running a near new 3ym20 and an older 3jh, both good engines. Have never failed to start. For me if I had a choice it would always be a yanmar, the Beta and other marinised Kubotas are good but seem a bit agricultural (no pun intended). The 3ym is a lovely little motor, very quiet and smooth. The 3jh a bit noisy in comparison but they do big hours when looked after. In my opinion a good Yanmar engine can make a boat more attractive to a prospective buyer than their competitors.

  3. Just sussed and I have Johnson 2200GPH and a 4000GPH.

In theory they should shift 6.5lts per second with the heads they have.

Got them from Lighthouse Marine in Albany. From memory around 5 hundy for the pair.

Have you tried them in reality? I have found bilge pump manufacturers claims to be somewhat dubious.

  4. We went through a few different pumps trying to get a good system for water ballast. The main problem we found was the high volume electric jobbies wouldn't self prime and the current draw was such that we needed the engine running anyway.

Ended up getting a very large impeller pump connected via a belt to the engine with an electrically activated clutch similar to the ones on a freezer pump.

Never needs priming and does about 300 litres a minute. We also have a fitting so it can be used as an emergency pump.

We have used this setup a lot in the last 18 months and it has proven trouble free. The pump is similar to the ones used in very big boat engines so they can do big hours.

  5. I wouldn't go any less than two, if you are not changing the color it will cover with one but in my experience one coat will chip easily. I imagine you are asking because the price is eye wateringly expensive. We used the TransOmarine paint when painting our boat recently. Essentially the same stuff, 2 pack polyurethane and a lot cheaper. If you are brushing or rolling you need to get the brushing thinners with either product. https://www.protectivepaints.co.nz/product/03-43-polyurethane-gloss

  6. I'd definitely go for the easterly over an H28. They are a better sail boat, both are pretty slow by today's standards but capable sea boats.

They are getting old now so make sure you get a good marine surveyor and listen to what he says carefully.

  7. Use them as a pattern to make new ones out of at least 316 stainless. I wouldn't bother trying to resurrect the old ones they have done their time. I wouldn't go for gal unless the rest of the rigging was gal.

  8. Was a couple of weekends ago but was epic.

Left Tauranga on Friday morning, got to Issy bay at 10pm for a sleep.

Got up the next morning did the last SSANZ race. Got the Gun for our division. Rafted up in Issy bay for some rums with a friend who brought us over Fish and Chips from Waiheke.

Got up the next morning and sailed back to Tauranga. Had an awesome run home 12.5 hours from Issy Bay to A beacon. Five hours from the Mercs to A beacon mostly two sailing but got the A3 up once the wind dropped to 20 knots. Had a couple of lay downs but mostly good.

Got some footage two sailing in a 35 knot north westerly under reefed main and no.4 hitting over 20 knots at times.

  9. I used to despise wheels, I even took the wheel off one boat and converted it to a tiller and are now thinking of converting it back for cruising. Now that I am used to a wheel I often prefer it especially running hard downwind. Seems to me Wheels are better downwind and a Tiller can often be better/more precise upwind
