General Marine Services have another business that does those clever bulkhead fittings in fireproof versions, call them & talk to Mick Coventry.

Whitsundays in Queensland is pretty nice, spent a great week there on a Seawind 1000. As IT said, Tonga is pretty damn nice too!
Hard to go wrong really, warm clear water, trade winds, friendly locals. If you pick Aus just don't talk about the rugby!
-
Yep, 879 millibars, that would get my attention!
-
Wheels you choose to answer questions that suit you but not others,.
Your credibility was lost when you did not answer the following.
Yep wheels your credibilty is lost, lost I say!
How dare you be so uncredible! Imagine, not answering an earnest chap like Rehab. Beggars belief really?

Great advice IT, now that you're back from swanning round the South Pacific, let's talk B & G!
How's that set up you're putting together looking?
I've fallen in lust with needing laylines displayed for both tacks!
Sorry about the thread drift, but as Wheels has discovered this ones a dead duck anyway.

But whatever, that's a beautiful yacht. I've always loved the Wally Yachts for the same clean lines.
Well that's if a man could ever really love half a boat!

Second hand 25kg Rocna, one of the original NZ made ones, before they went to China. Could use a regalv but never been bent or otherwise abused.
Was on a 45' cat, holds very well, just needed a new anchor without a roll bar to fit under the catwalk.
$300
PM me if you need a pic,

KM, you make me feel bad for emailing you for quotes on halyards and sheets now! To be fair, I've not bought cordage from anyone else for a long time though.
I don't feel bad, it's long overdue that he did some work instead of stuffing round with boats, motorbikes, planes etc. etc.

No I don't think you are the exception Rangi, I think there are quite a few of us around that work like that.
We've just had a new freezer built & installed on Bad Kitty. Richard Edlin did the boat work & the glass box, Fridgetech Marine did the stainless box, compressor, & all that clever plumbing stuff.
No quotes, just people that I've used for years & trust.
Great job, happy client, no drama.
I agree about the hard arsed screwing = tears.
Everyone needs to make a living, and when I ring these guys up I want them to be happy to talk to me, not thinking "oh sh*t here we go again, getting screwed by this pr*^k"

Well here's my 2 cents worth. Yes there are some rip off pricks in the marine industry. Just like every industry, but I think possibly a few less than other fields.
But there are some amazing people, with excellent skills and the ability to come up with great work, innovative ideas, and that bring real passion to their work.
When you have a bad experience, & they won't sort it out, feel free to scream from the rooftops about it. And when you find someone that does a great job, stick with them.
Even if their price is a bit more than you thought.
You have to ask yourself, if you get 3 prices, 2 around 5 grand for a job, and one comes in at 3K, can you really act all hurt & surprised when the cheap price turns to sh*t?
In summary, if you think the marine industry in NZ is broken, have fun when you travel, coz you have some real education coming your way!

Yanmar had huge problems with their SD40 saildrives, well documented by many owners overseas & here.
Their refusal to stand by them or do anything about it, other than sell owners a new improved SD60 version has left a bad taste for me.
The engines are great, but they have shown their reluctance to stand by their product if it does have a problem.
-
Well you have your view & I have mine.
Enjoy!

Well there's a surprise, another fiasco around Chinese quality control. Never would have seen that coming!
-
Pretty sure that all the lead hanging off the bottom will prevent any "sustained foiling"
But it looks pretty damn quick to me!
-
Bad kitty's one is a Harken, works great sometimes then gets a twist sometimes when we go to unfurl the screecher, wraps the furling line round the sail & its a huge drama.
May be the luff line causing the problem, or could well be pilot error also!
But mostly its good,
-
I'll get Vorpal Blade onto this for you, sail-maker with lot's of 8.5 experience.
He'll have some ideas i'm sure.
But I agree with Clipper etc, fractional assym. gennaker.
We have a furler on our screecher & it does cause a bit of grief sometimes, the bottom end can twist up.
We have a sock on the gennaker which is great for short handed sailing, and never gives any trouble, but it's on a 45' cat, not sure if they are relevant on an 8.5 sized boat?
-
Matt I thought the balance was good. Told us enough to get us thinking, and hopefully be able to ask the right questions.
Wouldn't change a thing.

So we use a Rocna on Bad Kitty, but the rollbar screws up how it sits in the fair lead. Any one tried the new generation Rocna without the roll bar?
Or how does the Manson version compare?
KM, Jump in here, do I rebuild the fairlead and catwalk, or just change to an anchor without the rollbar?
We've always had great results with the Rocna, and I don't want to go backwards in anchor performance.
Thanks,
-
Yes I'm in,

Hard Drive is a nice little boat, sails well but is a bit smaller inside than a GBE from memory?
TC may jump in here, he designed her,
We had a GBE for about 5 years before Bad Kitty, had a boom tent, BBQ & put a head in one side & had great holidays cruising.
-
Yep i'd come & get up to date,
-
Palau would be stunning cruising, been there diving & would love to have the boat there,
Are multihulls safe...or is it just a matter of time before they blow over?

Yeah they're deathtraps Mate, Stay clear. My wife likes them & made me build one, I never go anywhere without my epirb, survival suit and a whole lot of safety crap tied all over me. It's bloody uncorfortable in the Tropics you wouldn't believe!
And then when you're anchored they are so spacious & comfortable, with no roll that all your bludging mates come over, drink all the rum, & clean out the bacon in the morning.
Building that thing was the worst thing I ever did.
H28 would be the boat for you I reckon?
