  1. Hi,

We have a MaxProp 3 bladed classic that we want to sent to the states for a overhaul. A bit of a long shot - but does anyone have a spare MaxProp we can use to keep us going while the other prop is sent to the states?

I will check shaft dia and blade size today.

  2. We just ordered a new stainless exhaust elbow for our Perkins from these guys : https://hdimarine.net/ - they make a after market Yanmar elbow (which is what is on the Perkins).

The prices are much cheaper than a genuine yanmar part even with shipping and they are a family business who I found helpful on the phone. Part should arrive this week - will let you know.

  3. Ahh. Good to know. Sometimes we are around park point or near matiatia where there seems to be reasonable currents. We certainly drift quickly past the fizz boats with sea anchors out.

  4. I have been meaning to give soft baiting/jigging a bit of a go since when we do fish I am really sick of the stink, mess and cost of bait.

Everybody I have spoken to says its important to have a sea anchor so that your drifting at the right speed etc. We are 40ft/13ton - and the sea anchors at Burnsco aren't rated for yachts that big, and I don't quite want to go full nuclear on this problem and get a coppins custom one.

Anyone have any ideas on what to do here?

I chimed in because I’ve got history with these sorts of dickheads.

Many years ago it was a hot summers day about mid January, Saturday if I remember, and I wanted to go to the marina and replace the spreader covers on the yacht we had at the time, kids wanted to go to the beach.

So we compromise and sailed from PH to Waiheke, found a nice little bay, we were the only ones in the bay, kids had a swim and the admiral hoisted me up the rig, I was replacing the upper spreader ones when this jetskier launches off the beach and decides we need a demo on his skills, using us as one of his rounding marks.

The Admiral called him over nicely and tried to politely explain the situation and the 5kt rule. His response was that he had a very expensive holiday home in the bay so it was his bay and he could do whatever he wanted.

So the said admiral started taking photos of him and said she was going to inform the harbour master, it must have been a while ago as it was before registration numbers where required, (I still carry the heat seeking missiles just in case however)

But I’m trying to let it go, really I am !!!

I have been sharpening my pitch fork reading this thread :-)

Well imagine if your kids are swimming around the back of the boat and the jetski comes around the front.  So yes, it's obviously dangerous.  It is also illegal and ignorant.

The 5 knot law applies 200m from shore and 50m from other vessels.  Clearly this guy doesn't know, doesn't care, or both.

And to calm down those who would suggest murder would be a disproportionate response, I'll spell it out:  the topic post was tongue-in-cheek.  Take a breath.

    Breaking legs - too much?

Well said. The dangers are obvious.

Apparently Trump was talkin tongue in check the other day too... ;-)

I've always thought it important to prove they are breaking navigation bylaws. How do you prove they are within 50 m of you? If you can throw an empty glass bottle and hit them, they'd def be within 50 m. Even if you miss, those empties float, and wont do well if it at high speed. Could damage their machine...

Proof? Thats easy, Section 25 Evidence Act - opinion evidence is admissible from experts. The court would readily accept evidence from a harbour master who would state there qualifications and experience then give evidence on a speed and distance estimate based on the video. Police can also prosecute speeding offences this way but it is rare these days. So the video and some S25 evidence would cover it nicely.

I saw a Facebook thread on the NZ Herald page where people were basically openly talking about that. Made me feel a bit sick to be honest. Ranging from guys talking about claiming salvage to a very wide range of denigrating comments. Unfortunately it was a very public spot with plenty of publicity (been in the news for several days straight).

I'm mildly surprised they didn't have a guard on it (which may not have been practical) or at least taken anything of value off the boat, like or the posh new game fishing gear that got nicked.

Apparently the delay was that it had just been filled with diesel, and they didn't want to rip the tanks open getting it off. I'm actually interested in what happened. Props are stuffed, engines came off mounts, and water ingress via stern tubes. I'm assuming the props clipped something, mounts broke in torsional force and all of that wrenched the stern tubes. Sounded like the hull itself wasn't holed. Can't help but wonder if its a route thats been taken before, and either the tide was a tad lower, or the extra fuel load deepened the draft a fraction, caught the props, and whammo...

I had a look when out for my morning coffee since I walk past the hardstand at HMB. The hull is remarkably intact. I was very surprised at just how good it was.

As pointed out props are stuffed and struts pushed up into hull.

  10. I noticed the other day that the port marker poles in the Tamaki River are a red square shape on top of the pole, but the pole is painted white.

These poles are remarkably similar to the safe water mark of St Heliers, which is also a white pole with a small red circle above it. Shouldn't the safe water marker be vertical red and white striped? It seems like it would be easily to mistake the safe water marker for a port marker.

Why are the lateral marker poles painted white and not all red as they show as all red on the MNZ website.

  11. Hi lateral

It's for the header tank to manifold. Carries the coolant.

I have a few places that might be open Tuesday because of the mondayized holiday, but was thinking of doing the job tomorrow.

"After 3 fines they soon learn" - I find it hard to believe that any got fined more than once.....

A request to Auckland harbor master reveals:

2019 - 11 fines issued in Tamaki River for speed > 5 knots (less than 1 per month)

2019 - 22 fines in Waitemata restricted speed zone

    2019 - 0 fines for speed > 5 knots within 50m of another boat

I would prefer to see much more enforcement of the speed limits. 33 tickets for the whole year is pretty abysmal.

We had reason to contact the harbour master vessel in Tamaki river a few yrs ago due to the 50m 5knt rule, they happened to of gone past us ealier, called on vhf16 and they responded to vessel concerned. When we went past they were getting lecture on the ruless.Good outcome!.

Yeah that is good, but after the fact if they are not around they didn't seem to be interested in following up when I rang. Didn't even want the video sent through. Perhaps it depends you get.

  14. I have replied with this :

I want the speed limit decreased on several grounds which are set out in numbered paragraphs below. I am a frequent user of the Waitemata harbour and make these submissions on many years of recreational experience on the harbour:

    (1) Increasing the speed does not increase safety - it makes it worse. The councils primary consideration in any speed changes should be that of safety (in terms of decreasing risk of collision) and any wake/planing considerations should be secondary to that. I have seen many many incidents which nearly resulted in collisions.

    (2) It is evident in my experience that many recreation users of the harbour are not aware of the precedence that maritime laws and bylaws take. The 5 knots within 50m of another boat takes precedence over the 12 knot limit, but many boats owners on boat the Waitemata harbour and Tamaki River are not aware of this and seem to think the 12 knots overrides the 5 knot rule. I know this because I have "educated" several power boaters in recent months and there response (incorrectly) is that they are allowed to do 12 knots.

    (3) Speed Creep: Currently many boats see 12 knots and creep a bit above it and the resulting false speed ceiling is in reality really about 15-18 knots. By making it 18 knots the speed creep now really becomes more like 22-25 knots which is extremely fast for this busy part of the harbour.

    (4) Lack of Enforcement - directly related to paragraph 4 is the complete lack of enforcement. From time to time I see the harbour master, and the occasional verbal warning issued, but I have never heard of enforcement action. The harbour master is rarely seen.

Also on the issue of lack of enforcement - I have tendered video evidence to the Harbour Master to 5 knot speed breaches. Harbour Master replied to me that its not admissible as it would not prove the speed/distance breach - this is not true as experienced captains can give a speed/distance estimated based on expert opinion evidence (Section 25 / Evidence Act 2006). In summary reduce the speed limit to 10 knots with zero tolerance enforcement is the submission. Anything else will result in increased risk of collision.

Did someone say the had the HM take action on video evidence? They wouldn't entertain it when I rang them - didn't even want to see the video.

Granted that wake causes accidents - but generally not as bad as what happens when boats collide.

  15. Does anyone have a recommendation for a person to do some work on the hydraulics of a autopilot in Auckland.

It needs a valve replacement and the old part is end of life, so it may require and upgrade.

  16. We did pretty much that. Got a smart TV with baby inverter and just use the built in TV on demand apps to stream live TV. To get the data connection you can just hotspot from your phone, and if connection is a bit patchy sometimes sending the phone up the mast on a halyard helps.

The 12v TVs we saw in the marine shops didn't look very good hence why we got the inverter.

Generally the cell tower at barrier over summer seems saturated (I think the backhaul is microwave) but other achorages seem ok.

If netflix is your thing then download before hand.

  17. Hi,

Coming out at HMB in a few weeks and need to give the tanks a clean out - unfortunately that are full, which is about 250L of Diesel. Nothing wrong with the Diesel in there, so looking for a way to temporarily store it before it goes back in, which will be through a filter.

Anyone have any suggestions for a economical way to do this? I wondered about 40Gal drums but haven't got as far as researching where to get clean ones that wouldn't be contaminated. Also going to need a reasonably beefy pump too.

Yea mate got 15 2 stroke from Fishing Boats NZ over on the shore... and was happy with the deal. They were really good to deal with as well and gave some good advice on few other questions I had.

Id recommend them and use them again no issue

Yeah I have heard they are good to deal with.

Is it not your SonarLog?  I have never seen someone elses track like that...  The one time I used it (on another boat) it drew the track like that on my phone. I cannot get it to work with my boat, not sure why, AIS works, I thought it just used the depth sounder.

There is a good explanation in the help of how the upload works.

The link here filled in a few gaps https://www.navionics.com/usa/blog/post/lowrance-simrad-and-b-and-g-plotter-owners-learn-how-to-upload-logs

I had thought that the chart card in my plotter had to have a valid subscription for sonar chart live, but it looks like there is another way.

I have the Navionics boating app on my phone and it looks like even if the chart card is not currently licensed it does it via the phone app.

So yes - you are probably right that would be our track in the display.
