I have a mate who works in the commercial marine industry servicing large ferries , globe trotting trawlers etc . He told me to give him a raft at service time and he could get it done for $650 ....in Auckland .
Seems like a Rort alright for the recreational sector . I’m glad that race committees are rethinking the raft requirement for short coastal races
Good to know; about the rort on life rafts.
IridiumGo Marine - Ebay - $1600NZD

Thinking about going to the islands in the next year or so. A 6 person Life raft and IridiumGo are two items that I am unlikely to use again, so looking to rent.
Is anyone who has these interested in renting them, and if so what would the price be per month?
Just looking to get an idea of costs.
If raft isn't current inspection, we would arrange that OFC, and for the Go would also use our own sim.
Thanks.

Maritime police. email or phone. pm me if you need the #.
They are happy to answer questions like this.
Agree with Winter on this - we had a issue the other day and the Maritime Police were reasonable and helpful.

So, we've been anchored in Mahurangi for nearly a month. At some stage we will need to fill up with water, which I can do easily at Gulf Harbour. I don't want to take up valuable police time so I think I should ask someone for permission for the obviously perilous trip through Tiri Channel. But who? Harbourmaster actually has authority I think? Coastguard (prefer not to ask them anything too difficult)? Police? Maritime New Zealand? (joking)
Does anyone know or are we all guessing?
I would talk to both HM and Police Maritime unit. After you have filled with water they may put restrictions on how far you can then go (nearest safe anchorage). I have heard reports that those coming back from the barrier are not allowed to go out again.

Yeap, been a few years now but I was involved in the distribution of these films. I'm assuming you're looking at lettering cut from coloured vinyl as opposed to something being printed on white or clear vinyl.
High performance films were made from cast vinyl as opposed to calendered vinyl. Quite a different manufacturing technique and gave a film that was thinner, more flexible and more resistant to shrinkage.
It's true that the life expectancy ratings are based on a vertical surface but even so you should be fine with a good quality high performance cast vinyl. Over 90% of the boat names out there would be vinyl - either computer cut or digitally printed.
When was the last time you saw an old hand doing lettering with a brush at a hardstand?
Dagwood - thanks for your insights, sounds like you have been in the industry. I finally found the correct word for what we have - a reverse counter transom. Do you care to reccomend anyone? Someone out East Auckland would be great.
Cheers,

There's only so many projects you can do with supply challenges.
I'm glad I started the replacement floor boards just before lockdown. Almost done.Looks bloody good. Nice job.

I had my boat sign-written with Vinyl lettering about 10 years ago - its still lookin great.
My counter stern faces north in the marina and cops the sun all day. Dark blue lettering on silver/grey.
Ahhh - good to know. Thanks

We have lazy jacks, but not the stack pack - they are a pain in this configuration so we are getting a stack pack built. Will let you know the outcome once we are out of lock down.
I too have heard about the cordage getting caught (and we have a fully battened main) - apparently the size & type of the cordage needs to be right. For us 6mm sashcord on the aft most line was recommended - anything smaller increases chance of tangle (40ft boat).

Lateral I like your idea of an on off switch on the regulator supply, might try that.
The graph is from a Victron 712, cabled into a Victron Venus GX which uploads data to the cloud, graphs are then from the Victron VRM portal
See here https://vrm.victronenergy.com/installation/36577/advanced (not my boat)
Winter : I have the VRM portal as well (except I did it with a Rasp Pi) - its bloody brilliant isn't it?

We were looking at Vinyl lettering on our transom, the camber of the transom is such that it faces the sun (there is probably a term for that) - but anyway the point is the sign writer said that in NZ UV the lettering would not last long, and needed to be on a vertical, or past vertical surface.
Anyone else heard this, or have experience to the contrary?

They normally have 14 flights a week for supplies. Now they have two. They are not provisioned for anyone but locals...
And, some accounts have boaties reception ashore has been less than welcoming. Others say it's all good, so I'm not sure.
Personally I'd not rely on anything from ashore.
You have a bread maker on board IT?

With all the doom and gloom about Covid I thought it would be nice to have a thread to lighten the mood.
What are peoples next boat project?
We have a stackpack being built which I am super looking forward to since I am a lazy sailor and often just use the furling gib.
What are mods & improvements are next on everyones list?

How does a VSR work (or not) if your start and house bank are different chemistries?
-
Has anyone got there boat name put on there stackpack and if so how/who - did it last in the NZ UV?
The guy making our stack pack says his sign writer stopped doing it because the heat transfers he was using was not lasting long in NZ.

At first read of this article I thought great - crayfish stocks might catch a break:
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12306199&&ref=recommended
But read on - Stuart Nash has been asked to allow them to carry there entitlements forward - the cynic in me thinks there will be those who will say they returned there catch but didn't and carry over the entitlements.

Thanks. I started to look into warranty - Shurflow 2 years. Jabsco 3 years. That's probably a good indicator....Buy once cry once.

Hi,
Our deck wash-down pump has died after only 18 months and very little use (maybe 30 times). The pressure switch is kaput - actual pump itself is fine.
It is a Seaflo pump from Burnsco. I had hoped to get the switch as a part but does not look like that is going to happen. I also looked into Sureflow - and they do not seem to supply parts for there pumps either. Are pumps a throw away item these days.
Parts availability aside I am disappointed with how short this pump lasted.
Anyone care to recommend a new brand with better reliability, parts and support?
Cheers
Al

Been testing out the new transducer
That is the wreck of the old Taiwanese? fishing trawler off Rakino.
I will probably still be a terrible fisherman even with the high tech help.
