Does anyone have a short end off cut (1m) of the gas detector cable? Ours wasn't quite long enough.
Looks to be 22AWG 3 core tinned (Belden 8443 AWM 2576).
Cheers,

IT: is there a better brand.
-
Thanks for all the good tips. I will try to install the detectors this weekend.
Very easy to override manually (short two pics) and I think it is mentioned in the manual too about a override function.
IT: were you saying the solenoid or regulator fails on the BEP units?
-
Right - well I will get it tests before I replace it, but given its age, and that the battery monitory was showing 1 red bar, I think its pointing to it being stuffed.

HI Guys,
We are about to install the two gas detectors. They are the type that can shut off the solenoid when they detect gas.
The issue is, that the lowest point in the bilge adjacent the stove is wet (see picture) as its a keep stepped mast and there is often some water in there thats not enough to trigger the bilge pump - so the detector cant go there.

The area of the bilge before it goes into the keel of the bilge has a hole at the lowest point, so if I were to install the detector there, gas would pass it on the way to the lowest point in the keel - but it would not collect there.

And just for the sake of being complete here is the overall context:

Would just above that hole in the bilge to the keep area be suitable?
I was thinking of the seond detector on the shelf immediately below the oven.
Thoughts?

I think new battery could be on cards. I completely disconnected it 6 days ago 13.7v and today at 12.9. 0.8v in 6 days seems a bit much with no loads. The battery is 7 years old.
-
No. It's not a cranking battery. You want a battery with a CCA rating. Probably 750 CCA or so.
Any recommendations on brand and where to get one IT?

Looks like before summer a new starter battery will be required
The current one is a BP100-12 100Ah VRLA (2012 vintage).
I am thinking of replacing with Victron 90Ah - like this: https://www.waveinn.com/nautical-fishing/victron-energy-90a-h-12v-gel-deep-cycle/136917205/p
I think I can get away with 90Ah.
Does this battery look suitable?

So to check Health, disconnect battery from all loads/charging. Read voltage and then wait 12-24 hours and read voltage again? THe closer the two readings the better??
-
Ok - good to know. I did start the motor but it starts fast, so that probably doesnt mean much.
Another reason to get BM712.
-
I did check the battery with a DMM - and it also read 13v. Engine turned over happily (its the starter battery).
Engine was not on during these tests, but the solar charger was probably putting something in.
-
Can anyone explain why this is reading a healthy 13v but I only am showing 2 bars?
-
Anyone using tempered glass instead? Might last better (forever) in NZ UV.
-
Finally traced wires from the Xantrex monitor. They go directly to the shunts.
Will trace the Balmar wires next then think about whether I can replace both monitors with BMV712.
-
Back to the idea of replacing the xantrex and balmar monitor with the Victron BMV712. I had a look at what I think is the charging controller ( https://photos.app.goo.gl/3TS1xD1L9eg8jWD8A ). I haven't had the time to trace the wires from the Balmar monitor, but I am guessing data Tx and data Rx go to the display?
Im guessing that whatever data is on that bus is propriety and integrate with the BMV712? That being the case will I loose some information ?
Cheers,
AG

I think I will trace the wires on both. Make sure they only go to shunts and if so will replace with BMV712.
-
Yes. Put the bluetooth module on the victron. Great history reports and easy to use.
Yeah they look like a great unit.
-
I doubt the balmar dc monitor controls the regulator.
Check the manual on the Balmar regulator that you have; that vintage were usually set on the regulator. Pots, reed switches etc.
I'm not familiar with it
Lateral, I think you are right, there is a controller in the electronics bay. Thing in a blue metal case as you say with pots etc - that being the case the BMV712 could replace both the Xantrex and the Balmar monitor? (But the regulator obviously left in circuit).
-
Well I am going to install a Victron MultiPlus and BMV712 - so that will replace the Xantrex. I presume i should leave the Balmar display in since it controls the alternator output?
-
So the Balmar controls the Alternator output (through charging regulator?) and displays information about Battery health?
The Xantrex controls ??? and displays information about battery health? (The same battery information as the Balmar display?)
To complete the picture the boat used to also have shore power/inverter chager but this was 100v and has been removed.
-
Hi All,
Part of my winter projects is to get my head around a few more of the electrical systems on the boat.
I have two displays that I think are both battery monitors:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/3YmuP8oZgV7AnAXp8
Why would I have two, or have I missed something, is the Balmar one providing some sort of information about the output from the alternator that the Xantrex isn't?
Cheers

Very cool. How are you doing that?
