  1. All going to plan American Magic hope to be sailing by the third week in July, and that will be the first time New Zealand fans see two AC75's on the same stretch of water.

The other two Challengers, INEOS Team UK and Luna Rossa are expected to be sailing in Auckland in early September and the third week in October respectively.

Rumours persist that America's Cup regatta dates and race schedule will be compressed and/or the entire program shifted into late January, February and further into March or beyond.

  2. it appears to have been built with an eye to fitting a couple of small-caliber, remote, 'close-in defence' weapons systems

to keep the sailors as safe as possible from small localised threats

1 - a small high-mounted, lead chucking cannon, that could hopefully put up a wall of lead that would detonate a sea-skimming missile

2 - a low-mounted somewhat similar weapons platform for putting holes in something like a small speedboat packed with mining explosives

    nothing that could 'shell' anything

    ie no 'gun-boat diplomacy'

it won't be challenging beijing for the spratly islands

  3. As part of the inquiry, the federal police raided properties linked to Moselmane on Friday morning, searching for evidence to support allegations of a Chinese government plot unfolding on Australian soil.

The sources said if sufficient evidence was found, the inquiry could ultimately result in an Australian and world first: a prosecution for foreign interference offences arising from an alleged covert Chinese Communist Party plot to influence a serving politician.

  4. the current talk seems to be that a trans-tasman bubble may have to be delayed until the end of the year

and only 'safe' countries' after that

Let's not forget Jacinda Ardern has also alluded to a potential travel bubble with Singapore. You can see a distinct possibility that places like Australia, Taiwan, Singapore and New Zealand could have an active travel bubble next year. This would operate on the understanding that Covid-19 is controlled in each country, and if a case was imported, it could be quickly stamped out.

hard to see european and yank spectators arriving in time for cup races...

  5. presumably from the log/diary found with his body

    very sad

    back to worsley + shackleton

Worsley ran a relatively relaxed ship with little discipline or control of alcohol consumption. Four crew members got into a barroom brawl at a stopover in Madeira, a neutral port.[18] While anchored in the harbour, a neighbouring German ship swung into the Endurance, damaging it. Worsley, enraged, boarded the German ship with some other members of the expedition and forced the crew to repair the damage caused.[20]Shackleton, briefed on Worsley's handling of the voyage to date once he had caught up with the expedition at Buenos Aires, began to have concerns about his choice of captain.

Within days of landing on Elephant Island, Shackleton decided to take a small party and sail the largest lifeboat, the James Caird, named for one of the expedition's sponsors, to South Georgia, 800 miles (1,300 km) away. From there he would obtain a ship and return for the remainder of his men.[43] Worsley, whose navigational skills had impressed Shackleton, volunteered to accompany him.[44] The James Caird, originally built to Worsley's specifications,[45] was about 22 feet (6.7 m) long and the expedition's carpenter, Harry McNish, immediately set about improving its seaworthiness. On 24 April, the weather dawned clear and after being provisioned with 30 days of supplies, the boat left Elephant Island.[44] Worsley was faced with the task of navigating the Southern Ocean to South Georgia. There was no margin for error as the James Caird would sail into the South Atlantic if he missed the island; this would mean almost certain death for those in the lifeboat, as well as for those remaining on Elephant Island.[46] Fortuitously, the weather was fine on the day of departure from the island and this allowed Worsley to obtain a sun sighting to ensure that his chronometer was rated.[47]

the journey, which eventually would take 16 days, in strong and heavy seas, to reach South Georgia.[49] For most of the voyage, the weather proved to be stormy and so overcast Worsley was unable to take more than a few sightings with his sextant.[50] He described one sighting as "...cuddling the mast with one arm and swinging fore and aft round the mast, sextant and all..." and he would "...catch the sun when the boat leaped her highest on the crest of a sea...".[51] At times the sea conditions were so rough he was braced by the other crew members when taking his sightings

after shackleton brought all his men back safely to the uk, they were then herded off to the great war to get chewed up

Worsley, known to his intimates as Depth-Charge Bill, owing to his success with that particular method of destroying German submarines, has the Distinguished Service Order and three submarines to his credit.”

  6. for the last couple of coastals, crew have been told to get the berth owners to register the crew number plates with the westhaven office, they aren't interested in talking with crew about this

a couple of years ago the berth holder's son was either a late addition to the crew, or brought a different car,  and came back monday 1am? to find his car had been towed

  7. if panuku want their bonuses

    they've got to squeeze someone

    https://www.panuku.co.nz/about/our-people

Roger Macdonald was recently in the news over an $80,000 increase in his salary and the introduction of an executive bonus scheme which paid out $451,000 to 38 agency staff,

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/117082902/panuku-ceo-roger-macdonald-resigns-after-mysterious-leave

actually council seemed to have stopped the bonuses

guessing they want to keep that money for themselves/us?

and not that they want to stop milking berth holders

  10. fair enough

would love to see some good webcams on bean rock

maybe vodafone could be allowed to paint bean-rock red+white with VODAFONE red on the white background and white on the red background

i'm sure there'd be screams, but you'd only see the name from the water, from land it would simply be coloured the same as rangitoto lighthouse

  11. somebody ask them then

what auckland's budget will be for tourism webcams?

then compare it to the budget for buslane cams

Auckland Transport (AT) collected more than $11 million in fines in the last year and the AA says the system needs an overhaul.

But AT is instead planning to install even more cameras.

    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2019/04/auckland-transport-collecting-an-extra-4m-in-bus-lane-fines-per-year.html

The 16 cameras currently in operation are on Fanshawe St, Queen St, Hobson St and Khyber Pass Rd.

AT plans to install a further six CCTV cameras this winter to monitor transit lanes on Grafton's Park Rd and Great North Rd in Grey Lynn.
