  1. fwd + aft

    or side to side

side to side would be an improper setting of the cradle arms + beam width

fwd + aft would be an improper understanding of the where the keel was, and slope of keel base???

very much how long is a bit of string

we are supposed to kowtow to the pros

but in the case of our own boats

    probably know more than them...

  2. if the tides are right

the cradle has been positioned correctly

    you aren't late etc

you should have 1/2 meter? of tide

to move your boat, via lines to the cradle, to your ideal position between the up-rights

(mast 1 mtr behind the fwd upright???)

    what am i missing?

  4. Some years ago I was beating into the inner harbor at a stately 3.5knots, slow 3/4 keeled, 25' double-ender, just off North head

From behind the old Americas cup boat, loaded with tourists, was rapidly approaching and was going to climb between me and north head

We kept a close eye on each other and he flew past at a speed and distance that gave the passengers a real taste of an an AC cross

    All good

  5. a couple of years back returning from barrier at 10knots? on an 8.5 cat we saw some spume in the distance and sailed over and parallel to a couple of bryder's? whales

then a 3rd rose right across our bows, fortunately far enough away that we were able to turn away in time

their numbers are on the rise and as the article above notes the bryder's seem to be less predictable to sail around

Melville jumped ship at Nuku Hiva, in the Marquesas Islands, and spent a month with a tribe untouched by Western influence. That led to the radical defence of cannibalism in “Typee” (1846), his first book, as a form of justice no more barbaric than Britain’s erstwhile habit of displaying hung, drawn and quartered bodies.

Since everyone saw the world through the prism of their own culture, Melville believed, no society could claim moral superiority over another.

  9. well done!

    bet there were blisters aplenty

They lost their way the second night when clouds obscured the stars they used to navigate.

Rather than paddle in an uncertain direction, they decided to rest.

As they slept, ocean currents carried them toward their target.
