There's a public rack at the moment at The Landing at Okahu Bay but it's not very secure and the plan is to get rid of them I think. My well locked up dinghy was pinched from there. BTW there are no moorings now in Okahu Bay, I meant to say Hobson Bay where we've all been moved to. There are also a few lock up sheds for hire. I currently put my dinghy on top of the car and row out.

At what point do you hop out of the car and get into the dinghy to start rowing ? And what system are you using to keep water out of the intake manifold

NRC alongside the Cawthron institute and Scion?, will be holding a meeting with any / all  interested yachties / boat owners next Monday the 7th of November at 7pm, at their Whangarei office. I understand it is to try develop an understanding of how both can go forward (I hope) in the best interests of Boaties and NRC Biosecurity.

Can you provide me a link to the notification ?  Cant find anything on their site

She was competing in the Hawaii to Hiroshima Race under Japanese ownership. I can't remember what year that was.

Just found a small mention of it but couldn’t copy it . It was leading the race and was called Mimi , year was 1989 apparently they were using “satnav” when they went aground

Yes for boats only, more like 83 or 84 actually

Yep you are right . Counting backwards it works out to late 84 …I think 🤔

Yes I saw them hard on the wind heading north on that cruise as we were returning from the BOI , was impressed how she was going to weather.

    You’ve got a bloody good remember !  That must’ve been 1986-7 ?

The old Uptown Girl was lost on Pearl and Hermes reef many years ago.

That’s a shame , was it in the pac cup or transpac at the time ? . I think it was built for a kiwi in San Fran ?  I distinctly remember seeing some photos of the “sea trial” which was a cruising holiday . My school mate took some photos of Bruce on the helm coming back from BOI , big grin on his face with the Dinghy out the back just about airborne going down the face of a bloody decent swell . They had a good north east breeze and hooned down the coast back to Auckland

  9. Bruce Hopwood  built uptown girl which I think was the first one , I checked it out in the shed just before launching when I was all of 12 years old 😳 . I think he’s still in Auckland somewhere tinkering with marine stuff . He built most models of Ross boats and may know how to get hold of drawings

yeah, we got a crop of those starchy Pacific Island jobs a few years ago in Auckland.  I expect to get more of better quality as time goes by.

Misi Luki from Samoa is currently one of the better varieties to grow , less starch and great flavour compared to cavendish .  There were some very promising commercial hybrid Varieties coming out of gisborne but I doubt you will see the plants for sale anytime soon .

Burnsco are showing stock online in most of their stores for orange smokes?

So is marine deals but they don’t have them “in stock “ slightly misleading advertising . It’s in stock but the stock is in a shipping container somewhere in transit

  12. Anyone else still waiting for flares ?  We Got cat3 even though I couldn’t get hold of handheld smokes . Apparently it’s really getting out of hand , especially for the commercial folk who are needing to update their flares . Fingers crossed the shipment arrives before raceday . It would suck to get penalised for not having smokes on  board .

    "Why is it a problem?

The Mediterranean fanworm can form dense colonies of up to 1000 individuals per square metre that will exclude the settlement of other organisms. It also has a high filtering ability that may influence the composition of planktonic communities and abundance of some species. The presence of the Mediterranean fanworm in areas where mussels or oysters are located may affect their growth due to competition for food. The tubes of the Mediterranean fanworm may attached themselves to aquaculture equipment or vessels and this may increase harvesting or fuel costs, respectively."

Anyone seen it anywhere is numbers other than at the marina?

Yeah the bay in front of our yacht club is well infested with it (Parua bay)  . Our race marks need regular cleaning to keep them floating
