  1. So I hear, you guys owned that race last time.

I would absolutely love to but November is always mental at work

(boat owners are surprisingly unsympathetic to boat builders going racing)

and I can’t see me having all the Cat 2 stuff sorted by then.

As it is I have decided to just get Cat 3 for the triangle next year and then start working my way through the extra stuff for Cat 2.

Currently oversizing the kite gear and building a new kite pole after last weekends pleasure cruise. Are you doing it on Legacy?

  2. Good to hear we weren't the only ones putting our bow under, not a nice feeling pushing that much Ocean is it?

Well done on some great kite work getting to Gannet we were impressed on the younger cousin

bummer about your kite, did you see the black and yellow "flag" flying from the top of Portraits mast? not the only ones to destroy a kite.

So good to see two Townson on the top 6

    looking forward to the 50

  3. Another heavy air epic for the SSANZ 100.

On Shimmer we got a pretty good start and carried our new small kite (thanks Tony Harold your sails rock) down the Motuihi channel feeling pretty good till the beak of the pole twice popped open and we lost the brace.

Set the #3 and watched the competition make gains while co skipper turned the cabin into a work shop and rebuilt the pole ends till they worked again. Great, kite back up just before Oneroa, not so good, massive puffs coming out and carnage everywhere, Shimmer doesn't plane so when the puffs got big she started putting her bow a little bit under, made me a little bit worried.

Had a couple of "moments" which we managed to steer out of before the really big one hit and we rolled into an ugly Chinese, boat on its side, lots of water, somewhere in the S***T fight to get everything under control the pole went forward and we folded it round the forestay. Bugger. No more kite today.

Consolidated our position at the very back of our fleet, to add to our pain we watched Daydream another T34 carry a full sized kite and looked from the distance to have good control, these guys are really impressive what they can do in a 70's Kauri caravan

everyone seemed pretty same same on the reach along coromandel then finally we had some proper on the wind sailing, we had a great beat back to Gannet Think we got back in to the front half of our fleet through some pretty impressive waves and a couple of furious squalls, then managed to reel in Daydream and a couple of Stewarts on the tight reach to Shearer rock. The breeze really dropped on the leg back to the finish and we were a bit underpowered on our #3 but thought a change would be more costly, in hind sight I think we should have changed to the #2 but we did manage to hold off the boats following us.

Great day on the water, pretty bruised and sore today thanks SSANZ such a cool adventure.

  4. You made my day with that advice Jon.

Im doing it with my best mate who Ive sailed with for decades and even owned a race boat together and remained friends.

On most of your list I have started the ball rolling but really keen on specific ideas that work like Paul's advice of the reefing J2, reasoning why some would go with a full replacement rudder rather than just a steering oar... all great keep it coming

  5. 3 hours ago, Jon said:

Triangle is Cat 3+ but best to be working on being Cat 2 by then and also easiest to go straight to cat 2 then only one inspection

best advice is start talking to your inspector (ph or email) and get their advice as they are the ones that will sign you off.

most if not all underestimate the prep time, talk to your sailmaker, rigger, boatbuilder etc now, then sail as many long distance races / passages as you can two up, It’s a single handed race in relays. Crew selection is probably more important than yacht selection. Really important that you sail with someone you can trust implicitly (best crews are people who own their own boat) and also someone with the same goals.  ie if you what to get the boat around safely and be friends at the end, don’t sail with someone who what’s to win at any cost or vice versa.

    it’s a marathon not a sprint

  6. Preparation for Cat 2.

this accidentally started on the lewmar triple forum.

I’m slowly working my way through the  list for category 2 safety in prep for the northern  triangle race next year and then hopefully the 2 N I in 2023.

any advice form those who have done this prep before especially on older timber yachts very much appreciated.

details I am currently working on are emergency rudder and storm shutters for windows. Any other great ideas much appreciated

  7. I’ve worked on a few boats that did the divided window mod and all got their certs. Pretty sure I will need to do it on my townson also. Does anyone have any advice on set up and design of emergency rudder?

  8. We used to hold bets as to which way would end up turning coming out of the berth. So don’t miss that skeg

I think the whole water flow over the aft sections are a whole lot cleaner now, it’s surprising how big the “foot print” of the skeg is on the hull and how far forward it starts plus I remember from my piedy cleaning up the leading edge of the keel makes a difference too.

I had originally planned on a shorter tiller but have actually added a tiny bit to my new one and I sit at the front end of cockpit with fantastic view and easy reach of all the control lines works great for 2 handed and cruising prob a pain if you were doing fully crewed I used our recipro but recon a chain saw would be faster.

Def talk soon I want to have Closer look at your new sails

great to discover someone else as crazy as to want to hot up a townson caravan

  9. I had Shimmer out between the enduro and the first Lewmar race for a second big hit on her rebuild.

She had never been glassed and was starting to show lots of small cracks in the outer planking, partly due to the new darker colour but I suspect also due to being sailed a lot harder and raced with higher rig tensions than previous.

As part of the improvements I built a Grey Dixon Mk4 balanced rudder as fitted to Pahi and Palagen

one of the most satisfying things I have done on shimmer was cutting off that  skeg.

I also removed the little knuckle on the front edge of the keel transition into the hull and Grey made me some proper foil shape templates and we faired the keel to this shape.

Its early days since all the changes but the boat is a pleasure to manoeuvre and reverse, turns in her own length in the marina and I felt she was much better two sail reaching.

  10. Stunning day on the water  for the first of the Lewmar triple series. Shimmer got a good start to leeward of the guys fighting at the pin got a nice set and held onto the Stewart’s down to the Rakino channel. first race with the new main (glamor Tony thanks so much) and also first real test of our new balanced rudder (thanks Grey it’s a weapon!) managed to hang in there mid fleet to motuora but watched the boats with code zeros stretch out on us on the reach back. Probably made the wrong call going right at the haystack as a bunch of 88s got around us going below. Poorly advised headsail changes (yes 2 ) gave away even more ground and ended up having class racing to the finish against Daydream who had great pace in the dying breeze to the finish but managed to hold them off and take first blood in the world Townson 34 two handed champs. I’m with you old dog fingers crossed for a fresh to frightening 100 miler.

thanks SSANZ easily the best racing available in NZ

  11. Yeah we do the Pic division with the Stewart’s and Beale’s and 1020s pretty competitive division with the various designs all having their niche, for sure the family caravan loves it fresh on the nose and a bit of chop

you will love sailing your Dreamtime without all the cruising gear on board

  12. I think it’s great that SSANZ starts in super light airs through to mighty fresh. No advantage to me in a heavy old boat but the ethos of sailing in what you have regardless seems a big component of what makes this format so rewarding. Also I agree with Josh the split starts and slow boats first creates a lot of opportunities to go ahead or backwards within your division, and it does make for the best footage in the epic LSD videos.

  13. Stoked to see Stewart 34s and Beale’s make it into the N truck angle race those boys on Open Country showed all the displacement keelers  the way on the enduro race. Shaping up to have some good racing at the slow end of the fleet!

recon the 3 Young 11s will have some cool racing too
