  1. Thanks all for the advice, I really appreciate it. Haulout starts tomorrow so very nervous!
  2. Thanks all, As we are coming from Whangarei we were considering coming in Port Abercrombie rather than Man of War. Is there a reason to pick one of over the other?
  3. Thanks for that Steve, wasn't aware that we'd be able to get a hot bath there!
  4. Hi All, We are hoping that after our haulout next week we will have enough time to do our "first" big trip after kicking around Whangarei harbour and Tutukaka for the past year. We're aiming for GB and we're doing our research, Does anyone have any words of wisdom to impart or any gotcha's for newbies? We're looking at chilling out in Port Fitzroy for a weekend as it's a fairly straight line from Whangarei. We've got a fairly shallow draft of 2.5ft and a big bruce anchor onboard, Being new to the area I was also wondering if anyone here knows of someone to talk to on the island if we get s
  5. Pardon the ignorance but how on earth does that rope not chaffe to hell in that tube, Surely the wave action will pull the rope up and down the floating bouy
  6. Those ones are too small honestly, the 210 would be the one you want and it's $12k NZ + GST + shipping on that site and EFoy are protective of their dealer networks, I'm not sure any EFoy dealer would ship one outside of their country I wouldn't drink it either!
  7. Yeah the Efoy units for 110w will run just north of $15k, You can distill your own fuel tho!
  8. How much juice you need? Fuel cell will do 80-110w/hr in a 9kg footprint, 4.3kg 5L fuel can will give you 5.5kwh and will run near silent for 2 days. If you can spec an AP to within that loading you'd have a win
  9. I can't help but feel this is valid when talking N2K, Simnet/SeatalkNG/etc
  10. Just a question on this, AFAIK and I may very well be wrong but can't AIS only be wrong in terms of position errors if the feeding GPS signal is wrong? AIS is in effect just a basic GPS transmitter (along with other sensors for things like ROT) with a fancy slot positioning system (for class A atleast)
  11. Hey Island Time, You seem to be a fan of B&G, At some point in the next year we'll be doing a small refit - B&G are looking interesting but there was some talk over on CF about B&G not playing nicely with non-B&G kit and the marketing material not lining up with reality, I think it was DSC calling from AIS or something. Whats been your experience with inter-op and overall support?
  12. Power draw would be my biggest question, Black box to your plotter will be less power than stand alone screen + plotter however that only matters if you have your plotter on all the time, if you rarely have your plotter on then a separate screen would make sense. Alot of black box's are also doing wifi/ethernet meaning everyone on board can see the data from anywhere not just the helm

    Handheld Radios

I have spoken to RSM about this and the official method is new call signd and imsi numbers for each portable. There was nothing coming at the start of the year to change this either
  14. Hey all, We're going to be hauling out our Tiki 38 soon for a clean and a paint, We've gotten about 1 year on and off the mooring at Whangarei heads and 6 months up in the town basin now and she's looking a little worse for wear Was hoping someone might have experience with or know of a good bottom paint to use up here for someone who's at the marina alot of the time with a decent bit of sailing inbetween. We've got Awlcraft on it at the mo that the PO put on. It seems to have worked well but being up the marina is killing it alot quicker than i expected. Cheers
  15. Hopefully me and the better half can come down from Whangarei for it
  16. Also, Wonder what the rules are on discharge of urine since it's sterile and disposal of the compost at a marina - Clearly the composted waste can't go in the pump out area
  17. Hmmm, Any idea on the price NZD? Could be worth a try if it's not $1500+
  18. Yeah i think so but for the other half and the kid it needs to be as simple as a single button press like the normal loo at home. The pee/poop split shoot and augur along with the coffee filter inserts will be missed at 2am. If those could be solved then I'd be in like flynn but for now it's looking like tank transfer and a trip to the pump out
  19. heh, that hold true until you live on board and work
  20. Hi Rigger, Yeah i've been looking at that, Big $$$ tho - Pricing around $2k for a 1.5" system
  21. Hmm not sure if I can get a composting head past the other half, Ive been looking around and it looks like even treated waste can be an issue places so I'm back to looking at a holding tank. Thinking about how I can transfer the waste from the below water line holding tank to a portable tank I can just take on the dinghy to the pump out. Biggest issue so far is dealing with the transfer from one tank to another and then disconnecting the hose without spilling any residual waste
  22. Hi All, We're going to be living aboard soon and i'm looking at how we are going to handle our waste, We'll be on piles at the Whangarei town basin, The pumpout is down the river a bit so I've been looking at a treatment system so we can direct discharge. Is anyone aware a suitable system for a recreational boat that is approved for use in NZ/Northland? I know the act refers to some sections internationally with lists but it's a big list! Looking something thats supported by someone in NZ Cheers!
  23. I think i'd get a funny look asking for a Chq Book at the bank!
