  1. There are these sort of gizzmos which may work in a decent sea with a injured or unconscious crew member I have never tried one but as a exercise how many of us could clamber aboard with foulies and boots on unassisted.

  2. Those RM yachts are just the sort of thing that NZ can do as well as France, and keep economical. Unfortunately no yards left interested, but they do fly and can be family cruised so the perfect gulf / coastal boat. And no pox or soft glass....

Shame really that the home build faded from view.

I have seen some really great and some really tragic and truly awful diy projects over my time.

The RM lends itself or a version of to being a great kit boat.

No reason why a local design could not be mustered using the concept.

You just need access to energy, space and the loot to be able to pursue project of this nature.

  3. Yup they are a bit of a" bed and bucket "but it sure can crack along. I am drawn to the concept more than say a Farrier which costs a whole bunch more.

The mooring conundrum in a way constrains the local coastal sailboat fleet from expanding its design options which is kinda becoming bland and boring.

  4. "We have enjoyed seeing our progress generally track upwards each year."

Yup, berthage rates are certainly tracking upwards each year.

Does the marina management have a "ceiling figure for the future cost of marina berthing rates or will they just continue tracking upwards.

At some point soon if not now many bertholders will just bail from boat ownership based on this factor plus they have already incurred the drive down value of their craft due to the costs of forever rising berthage rates.

I could  bang on endlessly about the much overlooked fact that Westhaven is in effect a public park and where else do the public pay such enormous rates to be able to recreate.

  5. Surely it is a pretty achievable task to remove the nasties.

Maybe they could employ Happy Teeth to assist.

My concerns are lack of vehicle parking, poor water quality and also the ever rising costs of berthage rates.

Seems as if the BEU model is a dead duck and Westhaven will just look to rental return.

Not a major but annually ratcheting the berthage rentals on the premise that there is increased expenditure does not wash.

  6. I remember the 1977- 1978 Whitbred fleet parked up at Marsden wharf and the Auckland start.

Watching Brunel shot from a drone fanging it in the Southern ocean reminds me that we have come a long way since those days.

    40 years in fact.

  7. Jesus, picky lot aren't you.

They do a single fin as well.

I would be interested too in how the bilgey gets along but given the coast generally does not suffer from depth issues a centre board would not be high on my list.

Seriously what are the options for 10m or less new boat.

Local market has lots of Youngs Townsons Wrights Davidsons etc that are all getting a bit long in the tooth and you can in my book pass up the Duffers Hansoff Varias and Bendy Boys at this or any other size.

  8. The Yankee Wharf ramp is a bloody low tide disaster.

Watched some poor bugger go arse up on the weekend and he was very lucky to avoid serious injury.

While I am having a rant what is it with all the asbestos littering the old mine base and the abandoned steel cables and debris on the foreshore.

  9. Getting hard to have that experience on the water these days.

I scuttle off in my princess alone every now and then for what I term mental health days and just lie in my cockpit or berth and read about great sea battles and adventures.

Part of the aging process I suppose along with becoming a avid bird watcher.
