  1. Hi Guys

I have a bottle of refrigerant, weighed it on some scales today and comes in at 13.3kg and new is 13.6kg.

Cost me $1070 but happy to let it go for a reasonable offer to recover cost as have decided to go electric.

Also have brand new oem sanden compressor, mount for a Yanmar 3gm30, brand new drier in box, condeser, sight glass and brand new tx valve if any1 is interested all is rated for R134A refrigerant.

  2. Hey guys, yes went through this last year.

coming from Aus with a boat that is aus or nz built is duty free.

However if a boat sells overseas the new owner has to pay gst when entering back into the country. Value is decided from sale and purchase agreement or if you can get a valuation before leaving said country that is a less value they will take the latest value.

I tried many ways to get around this and had to pay in the end. Boat got locked in Marsden Cove and wasnt allowed to leave until it was all settled.

Sucks but is how it is unfortunately no matter how you think about it.

  3. Kicks Race report for the RAYC White Island Race.

So Friday morning started at 7am leaving the dock for our trip down from Whangaparaoa to the start line off Devonport. All was going well until i noticed the instruments were displaying 11.7 volts.... that didn’t seem right so started investigating and we were getting no charge from the Alternator. After a bit of investigation and having a look back at my notes from when we pulled the engine out turns out we have 2 blue wires in the loom and i had put the wrong one on the alternator ???? so allgood we are now charging but have very flat batteries which is not ideal so alot of engine hours were ahead to boost the batteries up.

Start time comes along and have decided on the small masthead kite was the best choice so off we go hoist the kite and immediately the boat keeps digging the bow in and wiping out, after a while we ended up with a big twist so was time to get it down and decision was made to go to A3, up it went along with the snuffer line ???? so far not so good. Down comes the A3 secure the snuffer line and un twist the tack and up we go again with a better result and finally we are off sitting all but last so we now had some ground to make up with both 1050’s in the distance.

Once we got past Browns we started pushing and the boat still didnt feel right, decided to reef and finally the boat lifted up and felt normal again, with no previous experience sailing with a square top main we now have alot of appreciation around how powerful it was and reefing was now a big part of modeing the boat correctly. Next was the new backstays were stretching so we had to quickly rig up a back up purchase onto the leeward winch before we lost the top of the rig. Amongst all this excitement we have lost the wind wand off the top of the rig which causes even more grief later in the race.

We are now settled in starting pull in a few boats and clawed back Sniper 1 of the other 1050’s hitting a top speed of 18.6 knots heading for Channel Island. Snuffed the A3 and gybed over heading for the outside of the Mercs and the all the instruments shut down ????, turns out the wire broke on the wind gear and shorted out the system. Kept pushing hard back onto full main sitting on the edge of control at times and looked a bit like the Motorboat videos with alot of water over the decks not as constant tho. In behind the mercs it calmed down so went and sorted the fuses in the instruments and isolated the wind gear but unable to get the auto pilot going again, alot of hand steering was ahead of us!

As dark came we dropped the A3 and the plan was to go to the FRO but the furler had been put in a very safe place and for the life of me couldn’t find it so settled on the #2 down to White Island which felt good but when Gale Force showed back up on AIS they had put 8 mile on us so big loss there but had put about 5 Mile on Sniper. Rounded white Island somewhere around 1-2am? Memory a bit vague but did see the volcano under the moonlight and smelt the Sulphur, would really like to see in daylight one day!

Settled in upwind double reefed and #2, very hard to know how we were going with no wind gear so had to sail by feel the whole way back to Channel island, we stayed out wide waiting for it to clock North which never came and when we came back inside cuvier Sniper crossed only Meters in front but we pushed into the land and when we came out we crossed back in front just as the breeze was shutting down and the turn of the tide approaching. Not managing to get to Channel before the tide turned we started heading back out to sea at about 1 knot. About 5 hours later we finally got around and started heading for home with Sniper just inside us.

As the Breeze started filling we went onto the A2 which carried us all the way to the finish with the company of Dolphins and a blue sunny sky opening up a lead of a couple of minutes to Sniper and the Mighty C U Later Yachting hunting us down. Finishing at 10.50 am Sunday morning.

Good work to Ken and Sam on the Gale Force Racing for showing us how it is done!

All in all was a great shake down after our refit but probably a bit optimistic taking on a 320nm race 1 week after re launching the boat and it really showed we had a few bugs to iron out and new sails we need to learn plus a rig tune would go a long way to our windward performance.

Thanks to all the volunteers from Royal Akarana Yacht Club for putting this race together????, Kick will be back for another lap!

    Next up is #rni2020

  4. Hey guys

I am going to have another go at gassing up the freezer on Kick, worked well last time apart from the system leaked...

Have just purchased a new compressor as it turns out replacing seals is all most cost neutral to rebuilding the current one and trying to source a new thermostat as it seemed to be a bit sticky last time around and will be ready to gas up in the coming weeks.

Does anyone have a bottle of R134A refridgerant that i could pay for what i use?

Also anyone know where to source one of these from and rough cost?thermostat.jpg

    Thanks

  5. If you are going up to Fusion anyway, and draw enough to float in a bath tub, you could probably find a suitable spot to anchor that is out of the way, further above the Stillwater boating club. Depending on how fussy you are. I haven't been that far up for a while, but if you laid an anchor out fore and aft I'd think you would be fine. It's obviously sheltered up there, no wave action, a bit of current from tide is all. Mud bottom / river banks at low tide. If you are happy taking the bottom, it would be easy to find a spot.

Of course, very few insurance policies cover boats at anchor unattended for more than 24 hrs.

There is more than one derelict boat tucked away up there...

I wouldnt be doing that, my parents and others have their boats on certified pile moorings up river and it makes them most nervous when people do that.

Have seen a few boats that try that and have dragged into the mud banks and then sink, also my previous boat was moored up there and got damaged by a boat dragging in a storm, not nice when you are on the receiving end of someones bad decision.

  6. That is an option, but I think the set-up is to balance the rig out and carry more sail area as the chain plates were moved to the gunwales, preventing the use of overlappers.

She can be a handful reaching sometimes so suspect that was to reduce the rounding up that can happen.

I believe the other 10.5’s have had keels moved aft which would assist with that?

Do you struggle getting forstay tension with that setup?

  7. Yes you are right about the comparisons, and some good points too re the repairs. The reason I asked bout the 1220s was there was a few on the market a while ago for a similar price so was weighing that up - but then again the 1050s are in a similar range.

My preference is the 1050 but there just aren’t any available, and the wright ticks a lot of boxes in terms of what my wife and I have thought would be nice to have on a cruising boat:

    Bimini

    Furling main

    Freezer

    Shower.

Most of our sailing is cruising, but I do like something that sails well, and would do the occasional race.

It’s a hard road finding the perfect boat (on a budget) :-) - and Alan Wright seems to be able to pack a lot of room into his boats

Remember it is a buyers market so if they want to sell they would be flexible on price.

  8. Do we know how long ago this was? They are wanting a top end price in todays market and I wonder about the future state of the internal cabinetry, electronics, engine etc.

Considering it was an insurance job they would have rewired the whole boat, electronics should be ok as it sounds like it never sank only halfway up engine.

If engine never submerged past the intake there shouldnt be any issues and again being an insurance job it would have been thoroughly checked.

They are nice boats and seem to sail well, i wouldnt compare it to a 1220 as you are comparing an 11m to a 12.2m so hardly fair to match them off against eachother.

  9. Hi Guys

Would like some clarification from an incident that has happened causing damage to the hull of a boat.

Mediation has been carried out between the 2 skippers and it has been found that the protest could be thrown out due to protest flags not been raised quick enough from both parties.

How does this sit when there is damage caused and insurance companies involved who would want answers? Should the protest be carried out to find the boat at fault for insurance purposes?
