Two new species of non-indigenous algae were discovered in mid-2021, identified by NIWA researchers as Caulerpa brachypus and Caulerpa parvifolia.
New Zealand has some native species of Caulerpa but the two species identified in 2021 showed similar characteristics to the highly invasive Caulerpa taxifolia that has been problematic overseas. Caulerpa taxifolia has been listed as a Notifiable Species under New Zealand’s Biosecurity Act since 2001.
The two new species of Caulerpa were found in a variety of habitats and depths near Aotea. They covered large areas of seafloor and appeared to spread quickly.
Both species were given the status of Unwanted Organisms under the Biosecurity Act in September 2021.

Populations of the green marine macroalgae Caulerpa taxifolia and Caulerpa cylindracea have invaded and spread throughout Mediterranean after they were introduced from Australia. In Australia, these tropical to subtropical species have established invasive populations in New South Wales, South Australia, and most recently, for C. cylindracea, in Victoria. Significant efforts have been made to elucidate the invasion history and geographic source locations of Mediterranean populations. The same effort has been lacking in Australia. Both species have provided challenges for molecular ecologists because of their predominantly clonal reproduction and low genetic variation within invasive populations in the case of C. taxifolia, and very high intra-individual genetic variation in C. cylindracea.

I have also shown that the response of native and invasive Caulerpa spp. to climate change scenarios indicates that invasive populations of Caulerpa may become more abundant and continue to expand their invasive range in the future. I also identify the limitations of this body of work and the issues encountered in the program of research, and discuss future research possibilities for invasive Caulerpa species.

Very possible it came from the viaduct. Remember they dredge it and the dumpings were off cuvier island
So may of been here longer than we think.

Cruise ships to Great Barrier Island dock/anchor at Tryphena - a port town on the southwestern coast.
So there would be a possibilty this is where it came from pre 2022?

On the scale of strange, I would consider spreading fish to create a fishery less strange than establishing a useless strain of Caulerpa at the Barrier.
If some NZ resident comes forward with an eradication solution that they have been working on since before the outbreak was detected then I might consider that a little suss
Show me a canal/river in the waikato region without koi carp. They everywhere. Bloody hard to catch so have taken to dragging a old tennis net and getting plenty.They stnk as we put them through a mincer for berley.

Apart from Facebook MPI or from this site.How would I know there is "caulerpa"
NO signs at ramps that I use,in fact wandering around "Westhaven" no signs on gates to marinas
NO mention on fishing shows that Tryphena and parts of the Mercs are no anchoring.
So not a major problem as not out in front of the public on TV. Dont buy the herald or any newspaper

Plenty of options around in the fish finder range,but straight depth/speed? Have a garmin striker 4, shows depth/speed/gps can set tracks /way points etc hardy little unit for under $350 with chirp transducer.

The Squady had the "m" before the aks took them over,not sure what the reason was.. Use to race Saturday 1.00pm with a fleet of 10 most of the time.
Might of had something to do with squady new premises and "Ms" couldnt be arsed getting out of wet gear.

Yes they are responsible for bio security and seafloor/fauna/even stock out to the 10 mile limit but you stump up with $5 mill starting point and have a go.
I can just see YNZ saying we need to fight this and need $100k levy from every club and $20k from each boat owner. Give a page doesnt work as they have a page going and what was the last figure $9k??
I keep reverting back too 2013 where they outlined the plans for the okahu bay area.It was all for all to see but like so many we sat on our hands and said"this wont affect me so I will do nothing" guess what,no objection so now to put our planes in place.
Ayba/ynz missed the boat.

trying not to be negative. But with recent events(weather since January)Think council has more to worry about the a few vessels that use the facility. When I say a few, last few yrs never saw it packed out. Remember when Westhaven had the slipway by the bridge? Use to be given the hurry up to get back as others waiting.
Due too rising costs,not just haulout but antifoul etc have joined the trailer brigade,Havent used for 4 weeks so if I had a moored vessel probaly be unused too,weather and commitments

When Legasea/option4 went before the supreme court over recreational Kahawai , cost roughly 1 mill,3 court appreances ,a win ,a lose and might say a draw,the outcome was.The minister shall provide catch rates ahead of commercial when species become low in biomass. (rough translation) so expect to spend more than that to bet council

And that is why so many Indian taxi drivers due to the fact they need to complete to NZ standards. The heart lungs etc are in the same place as theirs so whats the problem. we have a pharmacist driving due to not able to afford to NZ course.
Its a crooked system. Time served in NZ or overseas should count.

From What niwa has posted,seem to be a water filter but can take nutrients away from oysters/mussels,no mention of fish.
With warmer tempertures,more shipping its only a uestion of time before more deadly pests arrive,as someone pointed out .The pacific oyster which has overtaken our rock oyster,now an industry.

The "bug" exist in petrol too, but because we use our vehicles often and filling tank it doesnt get a chance to get established same with heavy transport. But vessel lay unused for long periods with 1/2 full tanks so condensation gets in and away the bug goes. Never had a problem, dosed tank each fill, kept tank full and regular use with regular change of filters and drain/check water trap.. Buy fuel from high turn over stations.

50/50 may work we you both use the boat at the same time. The 2 issues I see are. Breakages not being reported.(yeah it was fine when left it)
Maintaince Who does what or pays for what.
50% boat ownership is easy its have they got the funds for maintaince?

On the weekend ,Greenpeace held their "Ban the Trawler protest for the gulf. Where were "Legasea"?? being their non political selves. Under the umbrella of NZSFC cant be seen at or organise protests.
Just read the National party Fishing policy. In the next 10yrs to double output from Aquaculture.

Yes that why I emailed Eugenie Sage,she was Minister at the time for eviroment?Got a wishy washy reply as I said with fan worm being in Auckland and dumping so close to barrier,wont be long before fan worm is established.
