There is also a free app put out by Coastguard on which you can put in your trip reports. If you fail to turn up/return at the appointed time the person you nominate gets notified. They can then take action on your behalf.
HaHa Yes I laugh, logged a trip report a few times and forgot to close off. C/G never made contact with me via cellphone, they have my details etc. I guess its not tlll you go missing a family member contacts them then action starts.

It is exactly the same as when the mooring debacle went on,moving from Okahu bay to Hobson. A few complained but no one said repair the break water .There lies the problem breakwater goes the mussels went and insurance companies saying rates going up if moor there. If the breakwater was repaired and eaterlies waves would of been reduced and possably yachts saved, but no,All sit their hands till it happens.
By now you must realise the of boat ownership is viewed as a privilege and boaties must pay not the rate payer.

No matter which you look at it. It was going to close. As I mentioned earlier just going through the montions."see we did consult with the public"
But everyone sat on hands till final minute.Tough you get what you desrerve closure.

In 2013 they weren't talking about closing the boat yard it was proposed to keep it and add a travelift.
From the 2013 concept plan:
"Haul-out and hardstand In 2013 the Orākei Local Board assessed and confirmed the on-going need for The Landing haul-out operation and associated hardstand use. The haul-out facility for boat maintenance has been a principal characteristic of The Landing for several decades. The Landing haul-out operation is available to all members of the public. The Landing haul-out operation and associated hardstand use is supported because it: • meets the demand for haul-out and maintenance services for the existing and growing boat market • services the small boat owners mooring boats in the inner Waitematā Harbour • services the multi-hull boat market for haul-out, wash-down and maintenance services • supports the services of the harbourmaster and provides emergency haul-out operations. The concept plan proposes that the infrastructure is installed to support a Travelift® operation, which will refocus the hardstand on short-term maintenance as a priority and will dramatically enhance The Landing’s value proposition".
The concept 1 to 3 plans you referred to are dated Feb 2022. Therefore closure was not layed out as an option in 2013. It is somewhat more recent.
obviously you didnt click the link. try concept 3 and theres a map,no hardstand no nothing.
What we are proposing
Growing demand from a range of users is putting pressure on The Landing.
We are refreshing the 2013 Landing concept plan (Pathways to the Sea) to make it more accessible and welcoming to a wider range of users.
We aim to cater for those seeking water-based recreation on the harbour, as well as those who prefer to enjoy Tāmaki Drive waterfront from the land.

Giday Rg... firstly I am solo sailing, so can't rely on a crew to share overnight watches etc
I would say my experience is 'low to medium'...i.e I have not been up and down the coast 20 years in a row like some of you on here...a handful of times - yes
I want to head for Barrier (Port Fitzroy area) and then to Bay of Islands with a couple stops....from tomorrow I have to work for three days, then Im off for a month...the SWs' run out Friday evening and from Saturday all the wind models are showing building easterlies for days and days and days....my boat points "ok" for a 26 footer, but as I understand it, the easterlies will bring a big sloppy swell...I guess I could just suck it up and forgo Barrier and maybe do that on way home and take the easterlies on the beam, big sloppy swell and all...
Of course, and easterly makes the whole of the coast from Whangaparoa (where I am based) a lee shore, and while I don't think conditions will be dangerous, as I'm solo I just need to make sure I have a sound plan and don't do more than one overnighter in a row....
Any tips appreciated,
Cheersrun north with the easterlies, why slog to windward?

As a side note, I recently discovered that the callsign and MMSI actually belongs to the person who registers it and then that person can associate them to a boat.
When you sell the boat, the callsign and MMSI number don't go with it unless the owner transfers them for a $50 fee.
Got me thinking.A) must have licence to operate VHF B ) call sign. Now funny bit is I can walk to any marine shop and buy explosives,no licence,no idea how to use. Wonder MNZ will click to that problem??

Its part of our reductionist approach to solving problems, point fingers lol! We have more boats, far better fishing gear and less fish, its going to take a combined effort to reverse the trend. What is concerning about the cray article for example is that divers "know" the crayfishery is stuffed- they dont need NIWA or any ministry to tell them that yet the pressure to continue harvesting continues unabated despite the quota system.
werent crays dropped to 3 per day?kawau/waiheke/barrier basically extinct. Now instead of putting total ban like scallops we are happy to put pressure on other areas.. Incidently I brought 4 commercial crays from the shop, silly price to what was a bottle of beer back in the day $155 for 1kg . Only brought as work gave me $100 so didnt paying extra $55 as the wife/boys have never had crayfish before, tried poting yrs ago, lost 2 pots(dont put pots down near comms) and found door open twice, clever crays managed to untie.

I put the blame fair and square on reccreational fishers when we are talking 1 or 2 miles out from the coast. There has only been about 4 maybe 5 inshore trawlers working the gulf now. When I can out to the mussel farm and between 3 of us take 21 snapperin a hour between 35cm 55cm not hard to do the maths.Having said that we might fish once a month. and mostly shared amongst the elderly. We will get locked out to the 10 mile limit before long as per the RMA and council defined seabed limits.
How many traler boats out today 2/3 thousand??

What I find distressing is the old geezers at my boat club moaning their tits off about this. They don’t appear to understand the concept of extinction.
No, what you will find distressing is each individual council enfocring the RMA around every bit of coast you have access too.Waikato asked for responses on areas they would like to close. But now have full rein under the RMA act and can procced to do what they like. The first example of this was at MOTITI Island (rena wreck site)closed to all in the name of protection.

The original article by NRC included no Customary take but cannot be enforced without a act of parliament as IWI have the right under the treaty.

1. Double check that you have it set to "International
2. Use channel 64 for inner gulf, or , from Gulf Harbour, channel 60. Do a radio check with coastguard radio- they are happy to do it.
3.Technically, we should all have VHF licences, [ and you CAN do that online] but... Coastguard would rather you use the radio for safety even if you haven't got a licence yet. I can't see any way that anyone can chase you up anyway.
Merry christmas
Can be used in emergency use only. Coastguard will ask you for a call sign

Brought 3 yachts value $10/$15 k and used my boat builder mate to check them out,no issue.
Brought a 30ft $35k back in late 90s from a broker and bank loan involved.Had a qualified survetor and a sea trial, surveyor noticed vibration in shaft and when boat pulled out noticed loose prop shaft skeg, paid deposit until problem fixed and surveyor happy with repair. Then completed purchase. Surveyor back then was Jack Taylor.

Interesting recent case about respective obligations/responsibilities
https://www.justice.govt.nz/assets/Documents/Decisions/NR-v-HT-2019-NZDT-1335-6-November-2019.pdf
intersting, but could of gone the other way as the surveyor was not a qualified surveyor. Not clear as to a private sale or broker? If private it would be .Buyer beware.

It is on the vendor to provide a personal written guarantee that there are no encumbrances on the vessel. Then he becomes liable if it turns to custard.
A vendor being a dealer has sign agreement with all the relative information.Private seller can write anything they like and if they dont repay the loan. The bank/finance company will seek and take vessel and you as purchaser get nil. And if a dodgey private seller grabs the money runs off never to be seen again??
If a private seller owes money do you really think that they will declare theres money owing too you??

Thanks Harry.... How does the broker provide then provide this guaranteed outright ownership?..... what do they check?
Same as buying from a car dealer.turns to custard it's on them and you get your money back. They should of done the checks pre selling or offering for sale.

Thats the risk without a compulsory registration, their word no money owing. Even a trailered boat its the trailer only registered not the boat on the trailer.
Buying through a broker guaranteed ownership of a unencumbered vessel and covered for defects under CGA
How do you know the person selling is only owns 1/2 the vessel, partnership??

Thanks all - kind offer alibaba but I need the long short version, and I have secured one now so all good!
For future reference, its a Chatfield Engineering item, good NZ product from the North Shore. Chrome over bronze, solid af unless you don't lube the hinge...
Knock the pin out and replace?

my orininal salthouse 26 came fitted with a 3 blade and a spare 2 blade, swapped them over and 2 not as efficient but drag was less, now the 2 blade ,marked shaft so blade be verticle and locked in gear. Found out quickly not a good pratice better to leave in free mode. Went back to 3 blade. not a big difference sailing cruising but would hinder if racing

If you have the time its not that hard, you can get white gelcoat and a can of styrene wax plus any pigments from NZ fibreglass supplies in Glen Innes, they will give good advice too. Theres a few vids on it https://www.boatworkstoday.com/videos/gelcoat-color-matching-part-1/
Its pretty much trial and error, holding the sample up to the area in different lights adding pigment until you get it. Application is easy, usually brushing it on, then sanding back through the grades until you can polish it.
yes that where i got my pigments from, nzf panmure, black, yellow, red, trying to mix a yellow/mustard 70s colour, ist batch not bad, brushed over scratches, but where there was major chips they advised to add balloons mirco and thats when it went bright orange, looked good but when dried nah, will sand it off and try again.
will give it another go. Funny asking at the chemist for syringes and explaining what I needed them for. 100ml resin + 2ml hardner gave good working time.dry time was about 4hrs

Had a crack at doing it myself, mixing pigments, look good while wet ,but yeah /nah will wait till next year and get a pro to do it.

Just home from dinner in Ponsonby and a walk around Westhaven, very few cars and marina looks full compared to previous yrs. Sign of the times??people have to work rather than the standard 3 week cruise of yester year.
