Broadly I agree with what youre saying. Its the three monkeys in action. Imagine if a coordinated regionwide program was initiated to identify seaweed. It is so easy these days, I mean take a cellphone picture of what you find on your anchor or beach or dive and text it to  0800 seaweed with time and place, in fact the photo usually contains that metadata anyway!

How hard could it be?  People do care, people do want to preserve the wilderness, how about let them in on it so they can play an active role and not solely be on the receiving end of bans with no end in sight which appear to be based on science that is incomplete?

Was talking too MPI today today, control not eradicate now. There thinking is treat it like didimo and are looking at getting moorings dropped at a few places where weed is to avoid anchoring.

  3. Bugger me another species thats unwanted is now in the Waikato river.

    Asian clams'

    https://www.mpi.govt.nz/news/media-releases/call-for-community-vigilance-as-new-clam-species-found-in-waikato-river/

Initial checks have found the freshwater gold clam present over a 45-kilometre stretch of the Waikato River, from 1.5km upstream of Bob’s Landing, just upstream of Lake Karāpiro, and downriver to Hamilton.

Mr Anderson says the plan now is to search further, both within the Waikato River and in other rivers and lakes that are linked through human activity.

  4. Well this is not out public yet? The Shyte will be hitting the fan soon

Currently, MNZ's opinion is that ANY $ changing hands is then commercial, profit or not. We don't wish to test it in court. Plus, using a member's boat for a learn to sail course most likely invalidates their insurance. The idea, in our case, is not profit making, but for the club and the promotion of safe sailing ...

It will be discussed further between MNZ and YNZ... and our club.

Be all good until theres a mishap.

  6. recieved today as in a f/b advert from ayba

    FUNDING WILL DICTATE OUR ACTIONS
This is crunch week for the Auckland Yachting & Boating Association who are striving on your behalf to protect these facilities!
We have to make a decision by Friday whether we continue fighting on your behalf for:
    A. THE RETENTION OF THE HARD STAND & HAULOUT AREA AT OKAHU BAY:
    • We have already overspent our legal budget.
    • We cannot continue without the funds!
    • Once lost there can be no replacement!

Umm the current dumping zone is just behind the Barrier near the old munitions dumping area -not way past Cuvier like what was done in the eighties and nineties, this is used by Pine Harbour , Westypark and others from around Auckland-which is of course why the Barrier residents and Iwi were so up in arms about it being granted permission.

Yes that why I emailed Eugenie Sage, she was Minister at the time for eviroment?Got a wishy washy reply as I said with fan worm being in Auckland and dumping so close to barrier, wont be long before fan worm is established.

  8. Haha been here since 2021 but no action till 2022

    https://niwa.co.nz/news/marine-invader-caulerpa-triggers-biosecurity-response

Two new species of non-indigenous algae were discovered in mid-2021, identified by NIWA researchers as Caulerpa brachypus and Caulerpa parvifolia

New Zealand has some native species of Caulerpa but the two species identified in 2021 showed similar characteristics to the highly invasive Caulerpa taxifolia that has been problematic overseas. Caulerpa taxifolia has been listed as a Notifiable Species under New Zealand’s Biosecurity Act since 2001.

The two new species of Caulerpa were found in a variety of habitats and depths near Aotea. They covered large areas of seafloor and appeared to spread quickly.

Both species were given the status of Unwanted Organisms under the Biosecurity Act in September 2021.

  9. Nothing new,Australia has had it since 2015 or been monorting it since 2015?

    https://digital.library.adelaide.edu.au/dspace/handle/2440/104681

Populations of the green marine macroalgae Caulerpa taxifolia and Caulerpa cylindracea have invaded and spread throughout Mediterranean after they were introduced from Australia. In Australia, these tropical to subtropical species have established invasive populations in New South Wales, South Australia, and most recently, for C. cylindracea, in Victoria. Significant efforts have been made to elucidate the invasion history and geographic source locations of Mediterranean populations. The same effort has been lacking in Australia. Both species have provided challenges for molecular ecologists because of their predominantly clonal reproduction and low genetic variation within invasive populations in the case of C. taxifolia, and very high intra-individual genetic variation in C. cylindracea.

. I have also shown that the response of native and invasive Caulerpa spp. to climate change scenarios indicates that invasive populations of Caulerpa may become more abundant and continue to expand their invasive range in the future. I also identify the limitations of this body of work and the issues encountered in the program of research, and discuss future research possibilities for invasive Caulerpa species.

  10. https://www.cruisemapper.com/ports/great-barrier-island-nz-port-5496

Great Barrier Island is located in outer Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, approx 100 km (60 mi) northeast of Auckland. The Island covers a total area of 285 km2 (110 mi2), ranking it New Zealand's 6th-largest. Its highest elevation point (Mt Hobson) is 621 m (2037 ft) above sea level.

Cruise ships to Great Barrier Island dock/anchor at Tryphena - a port town on the southwestern coast.

So there would be a possibilty this is where it came from pre 2022?

I did hear about that. And I am not disputing the theory is possible, rather it just seems a bit of a stretch.

On the scale of strange, I would consider spreading fish to create a fishery less strange than establishing a useless strain of Caulerpa at the Barrier.

If some NZ resident comes forward with an eradication solution that they have been working on since before the outbreak was detected then I might consider that a little suss ;)

Show me a canal/river in the waikato region without koi carp. They everywhere. Bloody hard to catch so have taken to dragging a old tennis net and getting plenty. They stnk as we put them through a mincer for berley.

  12. Apart from Facebook MPI or from this site. How would I know there is "caulerpa"

NO signs at ramps that I use,in fact wandering around "Westhaven" no signs on gates to marinas

NO mention on fishing shows that Tryphena and parts of the Mercs are no anchoring.

So not a major problem as not out in front of the public on TV. Dont buy the herald or any newspaper

  13. Plenty of options around in the fish finder range, but straight depth/speed?  Have a garmin striker 4, shows depth/speed/gps can set tracks /way points etc hardy little unit for under $350 with chirp transducer.

Very little mention of the once proud Royal Akarana Yacht club , still thats the way they chose to run it into the ground, perhaps the squadron should take on the emmies -store them in the Vic building and bury Akkers .

The Squady had the "m" before the aks took them over, not sure what the reason was.. Use to race Saturday 1.00pm with a fleet of 10 most of the time.

Might of had something to do with squady new premises and "Ms" couldnt be arsed getting out of wet gear.

    Marine farms in the Firth,

They are still on the cards "Otto" and will be a reality soon,if you are talking about fish pens

Can someone please explain why there is a big launch still up on the landing and where has the RAYC gone to. Was down there today and all I saw was a building with big signage saying Marine centre.

  16. The Auckland council is broke,no $$,looking at rate hike of 22%

Yes they are responsible for bio security and seafloor/fauna/even stock out to the 10 mile limit but you stump up with $5 mill starting point and have a go.

I can just see YNZ saying we need to fight this and need $100k levy from every club and $20k from each boat owner. Give a page doesnt work as they have a page going and what was the last figure $9k??

I keep reverting back too 2013 where they outlined the plans for the okahu bay area.It was all for all to see but like so many we sat on our hands and said"this wont affect me so I will do nothing" guess what,no objection so now to put our planes in place.

    Ayba/ynz missed the boat.

  17. trying not to be negative. But with recent events(weather since January)Think council has more to worry about the a few vessels that use the facility. When I say a few, last few yrs never saw it packed out. Remember when Westhaven had the slipway by the bridge? Use to be given the hurry up to get back as others waiting.

Due too rising costs, not just haulout but antifoul etc have joined the trailer brigade,Havent used for 4 weeks so if I had a moored vessel probaly be unused too, weather and commitments
