Just discovered there’s some recent damaged to the bow roller area from when the mooring was serviced. They attached the mooring chain directly to the boat (which was too heavy for the boat) and resulted in damage. See photo.

The answer is here ,remember reading about it

  2. We used that rolled carpet type stuff from burnsco,,easy to cut/fit  lift out to dry, does not rot, Tended to leave lifted when not onboard as can/does feel damp when boat locked for a week.

  3. Was not watching at the gas station, went to pay for diesel, 150lts bit of a surprise when the girl said $380,yep had to call Mr Sucky out,now truck stops only.  Worst part is the next driver did exactly the same thing.

  4. Hmm if the previous owner had 6mm packing onboard then I would think it is the correct size, why would you carry the wrong size??Is there anyone nearby who could have a look or advise??

Side track here but why would a japanese car have 10mm nuts and then put a 3/8th on number 7?

without trying to be silly here but have you looked at replacing with a dripless gland? If you intend on keeping/cruising for a number of years, There is serious on tv (sky)about various canals around Europe, looks like could be a bit of me in retirement yrs

  5. remove old packing with a hook, can be done in the water, looks a lot of water but its not,3 x packing is preferred and joins 90 degrees to each other, nip up till stops dripping when stationary, should drip when under way 1 of 2 drips per minute and should not be hot to touch.

  6. This will be interesting, those pilot vessels travel at high speed, usually in the channels. It would be very difficult to spot a swimmer in chop or glare.

incorrect as far travel in channels, from my observation when they are heading out, tend to round north head and head straight to A bout, never following the channel , Why would they waste fuel?.

    Very unfortunate case .

  7. Yes there is a species of mangrove exclusive to NZ,mangroves grow north of Tauranga from memory. They provide a habitat for fish to hide, unlike the tropics etc where fish actually come in to the shallows to breed,They do not do this in NZ.

The thought was fresh water killed them when cut and rots the roots but how do explain the ones growing by the old Kopu bridge in Thames in a paddock??they have clear most from Pahurehure lagoon but some greenie claims to of found a foot print in the mud from an endangered bird, Most of the mangroves have gone and the silicone sand beach is returning. But the mud needs to sucked up and removed, someone in council said remove the mangroves and the tide will flush out the silt.Hmm yes that will work on the out going tide and when tide changes will come back in I would of thought.

Bayswater marina was suppose to of gone ahead mid 70s but didnt due to greenies saying it will effect the ecology, whats the results of the ecology now the marina in in??bet the crabs still in ngataranga bay along with flounder, bet the old devonport tip is still leaching out toxins.

  8. Not really, young kids get bored easily on long passages.

If I were taking the family to Barrier I'd night sail over while the kids slept (that said, I'd expect to be in and parked before 4:30 am). It's also fairly normal for 'Dad' to get up early and get underway before dawn so as to arrive in cool new anchorage mid morning for the kids to explore during the day.

But yes, bit of confusion over where this actually occurred. They got in a dinghy and were rescue off some sort of land, the photos show reasonable pieces of land...

my early take offs were day break not in the dark unless it hit the fan and had to move.

  9. strange to be moving at that time of day with family,4.50am,wondering did they get a wind shift and anchorage became unattendable so decided to move?

Good outcome all were rescued. Owner/Skipper must confident with emergency procedures

Bit of confusion over the news stories,1st one has it off whangarei at the mokes, 2nd article heading Whangaparoa to Gt barrier

  10. may need a retighten once in the water,at the moment(if out of the water) the hull is resting on the keel, once in the water keel will be hanging with no weight so may need a retighten.

The person who brought my wreck has removed the keel and replaced bolts 1  4 5 6 7 8

2 and 3 is a s/s u bolt fitted at pouring and this is the bolt that broke a nut off,did suggest drilling a new bolt alongside but seems happy to refit with by cutting thread off and welding new one on.

  12. Out come the pitchforks!

Hasn't the boy got mental health issues?

No pitchforks here, some here have met him, some have communicated with him when he needed help/advice. When one is prepared to drive out of the way (100km) to help him at the start you dont turn around start messaging with obscenities.
