  1. The second wreck is/was between the bow of the rewa and the point, use to be able to see wooden or something,The last hermit was an interesting character "Snow Harris" First met him at mansion house bay around 1971,asked who dad and I were and said "you must Andys son" dads dad,my grandfather, went out to island a few days later and he certainly knew my grandfather.

Use to row an old clinker dinghy 10ft? had 2 shacks, one towards the top for summer and one in the bay for winter.

The last communication we had with Snow, was what are you going to do when the island is too tough for you ,organised with the Salleys and a blind eye will be turned,he never made that trip.

  2. the mooring between the ferry base and karaka, are they not meant to be inspected 2 yearly due to the amount of river traffic?i looked at one a couple of years ago and that was my insurance company requirement so settled for panmure.extra 1/2hr was no biggie now becoming a pain with the dry stack open and the 5knts ignored by most.

  3. I don't have a motor sailor like you lot but do drop a Weaco CF40 into my little family cruiser now and again. We have found when it is pulling everything down to temp she is a thirsty wee beast. Once there she is very economical, nearly 1amp as long as it stays out of the sun and the kids don't open it every 20 seconds.

I did try turning it off and on but found what IT suggests, it used more doing that then leaving it on full time. We tend to load it at home/on the marina while connected to mains then drop it into the boat when down to temp and just leave it on.

The CF range are the compressor range, not the thermo electric...which are wickedly thirsty in the am dept.

Same, but we drop in everything almost frozen, set on green light 3,turn off at 10.00pm turn on at 6.30am runs 5 mins and all is good, forget about those electrix?? chew power 2 dvds a night, house battery sad now 3yrs on.

  4. /www.panuku.co.nz/westhaven

With population growth and commercial development, Westhaven is now very much an inner city marina.
It was purchased by Auckland Council in 2010 so that the public space could be returned to the people of Auckland for recreation and enjoyment by the sea.

What part public enjoyment do they get handing out parking tickets on a weekday?yes I presume they get a lot city workers trying to park for free, but From above it seems a reasonable explanation and surely a warning is all that is needed.
  5. "Sabre" just send a cheque off for what you think is fair,estimate/quote $600,final bill $1300,rigger does not answer phone or want to discuss?so send him a cheque for say $700 and make it clear if he/she banks it that they accept this as the final price.

he/she will soon be back in touch no doubt.

  6. Funny thing as I am/was concerned about the age of my yanmar 16hp 30yrs?? talking to a old marine engineer today and he said best thing to do is run it at almost full throttle, nice and warm, idle 2/3 minutes down and turn off. worst thing is to run at idle or above,This confirms what the Volvo dealer said the boat show regarding yanmar. change oil annually + filters do not sit on mooring and idle go for a run as batteries need a charge.

  7. www.facebook.com/kwarttonzeilers

Interesting page if like 1/4 tonners

There a nz      www.facebook.com/NZ-14-Tonners-509576052707184     page being set up and the call is to revive the class like overseas.

How can you go past an ior vessel down wind kite up and death rolling and wondering is this going to end in tears??Got in this situation awhile ago, pole squared and down haul on tight main out and she started rolling,FAaark is it going to stop, turned to 1/4 the wind and she stopped, most fun i have had for ages not!

  8. quote or estimate

    www.consumerprotection.govt.nz/get-guidance/contracts-quotes-and-estimates/getting-quotes-and-estimates

Quotes are more exact than estimates Estimates

An estimate is roughly how much the tradesperson or professional thinks the job will cost. They must use their skill and experience to make the estimate. The actual price may be more or less, but it shouldn’t be too much more – it should be within 10 to 15 percent.

    Quotes

A quote is an offer to do a job for an exact price. If you accept the quote, the contractor can’t charge you more than the agreed price. Make sure the quote states if it includes GST. Since the cost of materials and hourly rates changes over time, the quote will only be valid for a certain time period.

  9. I saw that too when I was looking last night so I just went to their site. Bit of a fail though.

Well that confirms its not my laptop, obviously Auckland Brokers must be having record sales in this depressed market

  10. often wonder about the great sea masters of yesterday,Polynesians,Maoris etc why we very rarely seeing any sailing or crewing, yet see plenty out in runabouts that imo shouldn't of left the beach.

Why have they given up on what their ancestors did?

Thanks Zozza must see if the library has a copy

  11. prop speed, have seen it applied at the club and according to the applicator it does not work on all props or environments, risk one takes i guess. Heck of price off the shelf, our applicator charges about $80/$90 per prop I think.   Like everything lack of use and the gremlins will grow

  12. This morning removed stove to find rusted gas line hence why oven wouldn't ignite, drained fuel bowl and then the fun started had to bleed the motor, being an old yanmar no lift pump. They were a top tank gravity feed motor??luckily old owner had put a bulb pump in line so undid the line to injector and pumped till fuel appeared .Took a few winds before firing but appears ok now.Had a hr motoring.

  13. http://edition.cnn.com/2017/08/20/asia/us-navy-destroyer-collision-singapore/index.html

A US Navy guided-missile destroyer collided with a merchant ship east of Singapore early Monday, the second US warship to be involved in a collision in just over two months.

The Navy's 7th Fleet said in a statement that the USS John S. McCain collided with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while the destroyer was making its way to a port visit in Singapore, the Navy said. The collision was reported at 5:24 am local time, according to the Navy statement.
  14. Boat brokers car dealers even real estate agents,is not better to sell 3 boats @$30k a month than to concentrate on the $250k which you have had on the books for 3 months, got to take the good with bad. And we all know word of mouth helps. Geez this guy really went out of his way to sell my vessel $30k, that guy might know someone who looking to spend $250k

Never know whats around the corner

  15. with all this rain/condensation and the yacht been locked up for 4 weeks ,interesting how damp everything is.I had the squabs lifted but still damp.so Saturday was a big wipe down and air out till it rained again.Grr. Need to pull gas stove out as oven wont ignite.

  16. What is the deal with 'borrowing' moorings like this for a short term (ie not leaving the boat),

Ok to pick up an empty one to stop for lunch?

What about a snooze overnight? Obviously, you'd have to move when the owner comes along..

Is there some sorta unwritten rule?

The trick is not to leave the vessel unattended,I picked up one in blackpool one night. No matter how i tried the pick just wouldnt hold, mind you I did pick the dirtiest mooring.
