  1. Oceanvolt system seems have several systems that seem to be well developed. Sailing produces some charge in the batteries, plus solar panels but it is hard to beat the energy content of diesel fuel.

looks simple enough, lightish, but could you power from coromandel to Auckland non stop without a generator, relying purely on solar, running fridge/freezer,at 5 knots . Why I say coromandel to AK is every time we sail over there is never any wind when we come home,3 times last season.

  2. Ok am I missing something?? looked at various site regarding electric driven propulsion.

Not one motor seems to be able to charge the battery bank, unlike a diesel with an alternator, the keep mention how you need a good bank of solar panels or a genset?

So the question is how long can you motor for or can you motor at night(no sun for panels)or can they actually charge as they discharge? What about use of electric capstans.

The cost seems (to me)prohibitive when you need a charging device, battery bank, what would the battery bank weight be v diesel engine?

  3. Does an electric boat like this deserve a premium?  What are the practical down sides?

     http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-1379547573.htm

upon a bit of research and memory it sold back in 2009 and it is a Jack Cropp, remember looking at it on the hard at okahu bay,Sold for $16k and if I am correct there was a bit of rot in the coach roof. Was tempted but where do you keep 45ft cheaply??

  4. Dad looked at them back in 1986,as liveaboard, but price was around $45k and being 6ft 2 not quite enough headroom, looked at the raven 31 fast but not practicle for his use so he settled on the d28 at $31k,sold 1994 for $28k not bad after he lived on it for 8 yrs, sold again ealier this yr for $19k and the owner had put a new 15hp in to it.

sorry no idea how the shoal craft sail but wouldnt expect to be much quicker than (if i read correctly)your h28,maybe in the light, inboard rig which was/is appealing.

  5. Getting back to the imports with their more usable space vs the traditional kiwi cruiser from 30 years back, I came across a Shoalcraft 31 by Cal Crooks in HMB a while back. Quite a beamy boat, lifting keel, a lot of good accommodation and a walk thru transom. From the 80s or 90s I think. I have never heard of this design before. Can anyone tell me anything about her?

There are few around loosely based on a mullet boat style 32ft

  6. I have owned keeler's for 30 years, always on a swing mooring, no problem at all. When we are loading stores for a cruise we use the public Jetty at PH. It would cost me 6K per annum to keep it on a ,marina. Thats a lot of cold hard after-tax dollars, might be different if you were in a syndicate.

$25 pw panmure, + club membership, cheap haulout wharf water and as we have to go past halfmoon bay no problem for fuel

  7. h28 start price $15k raven 26 $8k reactors/trackers $7k cav 30/32 $20k cav 26 low as $5k,all good production yachts admittedly some need tlc $2k and youve got a comfortable cruiser some need new engines .Reality inexpensive vessels that a young couple can/could afford. But where the young guys/girls who have sailed their youth at Kohi/glendowie etc where do they go too?certainly not joining yacht clubs and moving up on to bigger yachts as most clubs have dropped in membership. perhaps 16/17 yr olds discovered boys/girls saturday night parties? even in my younger day thought nothing of it buying a hartley 16ft and just go sailing Friday night to Sunday.Times are changing, house prices,6 day weeks etc.

  8. belonged to a smaller club years ago and thats exactly what the club did, payed for 3/4 of membership, better they get something than nothing?why should a club be affiliated to ynz,if only to run club races,as previous thread awhile ago, nothing to stop a club running its own events/safety regs etc.

Should only need to pay at one club. Its not like you can represent 3 clubs at once in a race?

  9. d28 d31 raven 26 etc end of an era really, all produced when we had a bouyant market, cavalier yachts compass yachts etc,now days it seems if you want a glass boat fairly newish ,appears to be imported, sad for the marine industry unless you build a mold lay up a hull and hope someone will buy your molds

As above, plenty of yachts around that fit my criteria but repower needed,my cav26 has a 40 yr yanmar 16hp ,does not use oil but its getting tired and to replace with a new motor $12/$16k fitting myself, not worth it,could fit a second hand 1gm but more than likely buying some elses trouble..

  10. Are the wood cabin/glass hull ones ok?

suppose it comes down to who built/finished them off, boat builder/home handy man? seen some d28 little $15k up to $30k depends on gear I suppose.one sold at our club for $15k needed a window repair, bit of rot but having said that had all the gear

  11. I want a D28, they look like a well laid out unit.

There are a lot around finished at home, wooden decks/cabin.  The old mans was glass top n bottom never saw any osmosis in hull.

most had a 10hp but he changed to a 15hp.the extra weight didnt appear to affect it.4 adults for 3 weeks one xmas with all our toys/gear and stll had room to move.  Unfortunately when he died we had just purchased our house so couldnt really take the yacht so sold for $2k less than what he paid 8 yrs earlier

  12. I think comes down too declare everything even if not required to cover all bases,Last year I brought in frozen crocodile steaks, professionally packaged, declared it,mpi went through there list of food and it was safe.

Now the yacht in question arriving in picton and clearing customs, could they argue they need the flares to safely complete there trip if they were to depart to sail to Auckland?seems a little bit strange as they can go ashore and buy exact same flares.

  13. Doesn't seem to comply with the law then, unless he had more than one month supply, or more likely didn't have the correct documentation with him. A possibility if he prescribed to himself.

He was quite happy to comply with nz law.He did declare it luckily.

  14. Importing a class "a" drug such as morphine is a crime.

I'm not sure being "qualified to administer" the drug would make any difference at all.

Perhaps if you were a doctor and qualified to prescribe it would be the threshold.

I have cleared in with some and a police friend said I was taking a risk and should have pitched it.

On border patrol the other night in Queenstown,a doctor arrived with medicine he prescribed himself, nah lost most of it and to go to a nz Doctor,so do not think if your qualified to administer it would be allowed.

  15. I believe that d31 does not preform as well as the d28.The d28 is big volume for size and is what may replace cav26.

my father had one and lived on it for for 8yrs and i enjoyed borrowing  it.
