  1. Thanks MarkMT interesting to read this stuff after the event as you never here/read about it at the time.

Just thinking about my own yacht, what would I tie a drogue off too if running?? bridle around winches?

  2. Ha - that was over 100years ago HT. the Californian's skipper was an idiot. They clearly saw the flares - knew they were flares but ignored them. Can't blame that on the flares.

Flares were standardised because of that so that even a idiot can recognise them.

Still applies today,Idiots, ask my nephew, lucky some one shore reported it as another vessel went passed and waved.

  3. About 1987 going past Tutukaka at about 5.00pm,saw a person waving a tea towel/rag etc,we went pass and it  still waving,we went back to see what the problem was."I have lost my diver heading that direction"so we proceeded and located diver, tow him back to the  runabout, when sorted asked why didn't you use the vhf?"I Don't know how"what about a flare??"we have I don't how" why didn't you cut the anchor warp so you drift in the right direction?"do you know price of a new anchor and thanks you can go now"

some people,if she let a flare off the game club would of seen it,patrons at pub would've seen it

  4. At pybc river racing thursday night/sunday cat 5ish sharp knife bucket l/j about it

now a fog horn i find a waste of time in any cat, dense fog hard to tell direction or proximity

10 yacht horning away at 1 minute intervals?yeah right that would safe(lol)

  5. Hacksaw has always intrigued me,yes can see a use but if you break one blade whose to say the other 12 wont break?pair of bolt cutters would much more handier to cut rigging in such an event, imo.

Flares well are they any use??nephew let a smoke flare off and a vessel went past and waved, some one on shore raised the alarm.

vhf yes cell phone depends on which company as some struggle once outside motuihe.

Frightened man with a bucket can shift more water than a pump.

Life raft?? seems like a waste of time for coastal classic but should it be needed probably glad you had it if things went sour?

I guess a lot of safety gear, bolted down floor boards, etc seem a waste of time but the powers to be are just covering themselves in the unlikely event of death/accident etc who knows what osh etc would come up with. Even though we sign a race declaration that skipper is responsible and does not hold club etc responsible. Changing world with the cotton wool brigade just waiting to jump.

  6. subject to a few things the VB could well be into this.. how late do the entries close?

Tuesday the 7th march but maybe able to enter up till thursday 9th,may need to check with pybc

    catering etc

normally a briefing on the thursday night at 7.30pm at pybc before the race.

  7. "Wheels" made a statement at the start of his post

The issue isn't the raft, the issue is that too many cannot swim these days. Which may or may not have been the case in this particular raft situation

Now that is a problem as I was a cub leader at the time(3yrs ago)and presumed all the cubs could swim, had asked as well and "yes we can swim" They were dong their swimmers badge and got them all to jump in,yep 3 sank like stones,so after that presumption went out the window.

  8. Of course you are all assuming that your "kiwi" sail is actually made in NZ as opposed to just having the luff tapes and eyelets put in here.

exactly a lot of nz lofts get sails sewn overseas and add finishing touches in nz

Not all of us can afford the extra $700

  9. How many buy clothes shoes etc from the warehouse??no difference, the consumer wants cheaper products so we support the warehouse at the expense of kiwi labour.

Now if we talking imported sails to local sails perhaps

    A) lofts in nz sharper pencils

B)refuse to send sails overseas for manufacturing

What a difference, totally different yacht, laid over and pointed a lot higher with more boat speed compared to laying over and stalling.

  10. Cheapish yes, well made yes,the stitching cannot fault or any of the seams, the leach cord runs from clew to head through 2 pulleys down luff to cleat,no mucking around at end of boom, top 2 battens full length and bottom 2  3/4 length, apparently will set better(will see in a 2hrs)loose foot

From their touring range in contender clothe 6.5oz.  headsail set well and just fitted chaff patches.

    will get some photos soon

worked out to $3.9k saved $700.

personally do not care if staff get paid minimum wage but because of low wage less cost to hydes which means staff can spend more time getting it right.

Ie according to b and g sails some of the patches for clew/tack etc would take him almost 1/2 a day and we would not be prepared to that cost.

  11. Just picked my sails and look good,so roll on saturday, hyde must be doing it right as they have purchased/building a loft next door which is bigger the eden park covered.

  12. What ya glueing?

A quick look at the specs and Im thinking Bostik 999 is about the same, Ive got heaps give me a call.

Thanks for playing turning mark for our paddle board races last sunday at motuihe.

  13. A slight change in colour would help. And yes I can see what the wedge looking shape is,reduce windage as one AK designer told me the reason he has reverse sheer.Imagine standing on the bow  with a sheet of ply,by having a reverse sheer you have illiminated that sheet. So perhaps thats the idea of the wedge shape.

Or are they working on the Callegher Idea.It submerges levels out and only friction is around the mast steps??

  14. How many of us oldies(over 50) had lead painted cots lead solders etc melted lead for sinkers model boat keels etc and no effects probably safe as we had our lifejackets on.

  15. little bit of a delay but sails are there way finally,6/8 weeks, but got pushed back as they had to make 10 sets for some one design class asap.Hoping to be landed this weekend,so all going well midweek pick up .I can feel a sick day coming on. main with 2 full length battens and 2 1/2 battens lower down to reduce tension on leash?no 2 headsail without uv strip.Just means removing end of weekend but no biggie.  On the nz agent front Kenny Fyfe is getting out and apparently his boys are doing shade sails,so went Brent Gilles?botany,he has all the various sample clothes and we settled on his recommendation for longish lasting cruising cloth with a bit of club/social racing.Contender cloth/dacron

  16. Blaming poor turnouts on handicapping is just ridiculous.  If you are that worried about it, go race a smaller one class boat in a levels regatta - got no one else to blame for your result but yourself!

Willow - I also think that % disposable income for most is significantly lower than what it was in the 70's and 80's and that adjusted boating costs "per boat length" (as an income independent measure say) have gone up significantly.  Just contrributes to making it that much harder.  Time poor is my big issue.

HT - that is a spiralling arguement.  You don't see the point so you don't race - others have the same or similar view - no one shows up.  The only answer I have to that is to somehow try and be proactive and convince others to come out for a play with you.  That's not easy - for example - Clipper really wants me to (and I really want to as well) come play this weekend in the solo but just can't see my way past the committments we have this weekend.  At least he tried.  I'll be trying as well for more cruising oriented boats in the river in the future.

So you need to work on your friends to get some multis in for the 3legged 2handed pybc event  10th to 12th march,we will be in the under 30ft division, bbq at Kawau Saturday night, see you there??

  17. Exactly and as fleets shrink the less of these similar designs in the same handicap bracket there are to race against.

IRC is good if you have the cash, want to buy a stock Euro boat and go and race. PHRF works well for most of us who have not so much cash but can buy a cheaper Kiwi boat then blow all our rent and food money tweaking it.

1970 to early 1980s,highlight for as a boy was watching the starts of the rnzys off orakei wharf, particularly the 1st/A class division. Sure the vessels are older now and costs to maintain but surely even back then with lower incomes etc these yachts were there racing.Whats changed?7 day week,on call work time?We have roughly 400 members and say 100 yachts from cruisers to racers, take the last long weekend, friday night race to bottom end and could only muster 4 yachts and 2 for the monday return race, other 2 went home sunday, commitments else where so no race, general harbour races lucky to get 5 and we are only there to make up numbers.Races are handicapped using tcf I think . Do you blame YNZ for over the top safety rules as far as categories go?All our races are cat4 with a few that require life lines to cat3 so not over the top to comply. Yachts too cheap as just about anyone can buy one now!(older boats)    What ever happened to the good old around waiheke race from maraetai?that was one I enjoyed as you could select spinnaker or non spinnaker and non spinnaker could not use composite sails. Lucky our club races sunday or I would not be a starter.Work Tuesday to Saturday Midnight to Midday.

Maybe there is rome if promoted for older vessels to race without the latest, composite sails but back to basic yachts. Would love to race at RYC/PCC winter or summer but being the average run of the mill yacht you know exactly where I would finish so no real point, not going to prove anything apart from have a sail which I can do now with the family.  Do overseas countries get big fleets or are they dwindling as well?

  18. Slightly off topic. most have a boarding ladder attached to the stern?mine is a fold down one and discovered how completely useless its is.Been mounted there for over 30yrs.The problem being last rung out of water, need to swing one foot on to rung and have a rope hanging down so you can pull yourself up.It is going to  get adjusted this week.
