  1. I can understand skiffs, dragon boats etc do not need to wear/carry lifejackets due to the fact they have a safety boat on the course but where do you draw the line?tamiki river off bucks blowing 20knt out going tide and no safety vessel 8 in a dragon type boat

  2. yes our tiller pilot failed due to leaving in cockpit over night,it rained, well bugger me are they not to be exposed to the elements?salt spray etc,now repaired it is in a bag but surely they must be able to with stand some water?not a drowning but spray?

  3. if mnz/council are so concerned with saving lives by under 6m wearing of life jackets they need to take it a step further.Boat wof springs to mind as we have all seen certain people of the community  in beaten up runabouts that you would not go to sea in a bath tub, overloaded no idea of the rules at sea.   Education is the key but some will not adhere to advice given so we the law abiding citizen must comply as not to be seen as signalling that part of the community out.

would the powers to be accept a smoke signal as a communication device?

  4. Interesting for me is how would the consumers guarantee act work?As a broker is merely putting buyers in contact with sellers and helps with negotiations,so my way of thinking is go with a independent surveyor.

I to buy a yacht via a broker and he gave me a surveyor report from a previous enquiry to use but went with a independant, turned out the shaft strut was loose and area around strut needed major work.no sale.I had to pay lift out and report, money worth spending.

Got caught slightly on the yacht I have now took a chance, paid the money picked boat up following weekend and water in bilge, rang previous owner and he said bad luck, turned out seal had gone dripless shaft seal.

  5. or

stay with the 14hp beta diesel already in there

wondered myself as to why pull the motor out?not a fan of have a outboard hanging off the stern, looked at it myself but tote tank or underfloor tank, petrol and lpg gas onboard recipe for disaster imo,. figured my yacht was designed/built with a inboard,so moving weight to transom may cause to squat where she does not need to squat.

  6. first I knew mine had gone was when my dripless shaft seal started making a noise(heating up)disconnected water from pump etc to find bits of zinc, 2nd zinc same as yours(thought i would check)managed to push, gentle tap,a nail in and removed, onto number 3 now, will check next year??is it really needed as zinc on shaft??

  7. Borrowed a new set of sails yesterday just to see if it warranted spending $5k on a $10k boat, the answer was NO.old sails going to windward boat 4.6knt in sw/s 15knt avg,new sails 4.8knt so not a huge difference, angle to wind old sails vs new about 2 degrees which could/would be significant over a straight line, but does it warrant new sails,no  at some stage they will need replacing due to age of material/stitching

You went sailing yesterday so here's a list for  now when finished come back as I have another list Grr.

  8. I find the Tamaki pile moorings a great value solution to boat ownership, but not really suited to going out for a day sail, which we never do anyway, I would never consider a marina berth as a long term proposal , and if that was all that was available I would either give up sailing go back to a decent size trailersailer, which was a very cheap and easy form of boat ownership with none of the hassles of antifouling etc.

Owning a big expensive high maintenance ocean going boat is one way of cruising faroff exotic destinations, If you want to cruise the Med or Carribean etc there is also the option of buyig a cheap local boat , and reselling once you have had enough, there is a good story of a NZ guy that cruised the US in a 15 ft open boat and the same has been done in Fiji, sailing doesn,t have to be expensive to be fun.

Shared ownership has to be worth investigating too , most boats are used less than 10% of the year

One of the reasons I have never had a keeler , apart from the fact I don,t like leaning over or sinking, is that there is always soo many of them for sale, and so they are very hard to sell unless you are lucky or you reduce the price heaps, cruising cats seem to hold their price better although there is starting to be some very cheap multis now that still arn,t selling, Krisis was fair value when offered at 80 a few years and now is still not sold at 30 ono, and that racing  cat Taiping in Auckland is crazy cheap at 75.

Need to keep telling myself don,t ever buy my next boat before I,ve sold my present boat again.

we are on a swing mooring by pybc, left at 10.00am back by 4.00 pm great sail up to westhaven and back,3/4 hr motor down river good time to charge battery and a cuppa

  9. under the Auckland unitary? plan, who knows whats going to happen to swing moorings, will they still be allowed or will we forced in to marinas?those that had drying out moorings in ngataringa bay etc were free but then h/b office started charging fees,we had one which we kept the trailer boat on,handy but tidal.

Rumour has it piles berths in tamaki river may be getting a length/tonnage restrictions. ie 40ft max 14ton

not many accommodating swing moorings around so maybe forced to marinas?
