As I understand it TL, those Hondas don't tolerate lying down like a good ole 2 stroke waterbus. So not great for people transporting the things in cars or for lying down in a locker.
i lay my honda down with oil window facing up and still give it a run fresh water every now and again,no need though
-
good old fresh water, run till nice and warm, even do a taste test(dont laugh) i use to)

That's one way to do it TT, or use a flow switch. It's a simple little paddle that moves with the water flow, but if the flow stops, the paddle comes back center and trips a magnetic switch.
Harrytom, when you fit the new impellor, use so KY jelly to lube it up real good. Damage can be done to the impellor the first time you start up before it gets water to the pump.
little bit ahead there, gave the whole pump to shop and showed which way of rotation and got them to fit it knowing how tight they are. yes I/T?intake hose was collapsing, had a kink so replaced.pumps well,2hrs motoring up/down river seems ok.

Thanks " Wheels" I try to keep tank topped up when sitting for long periods.

does the additive against diesel bug really work? I keep adding it when refuelling because its there.

just checked fynspray site for my pump,30 seconds dry impeller then stuffed, not a lot of time to stop motor.raw water pump also feeds water to dripless gland. .going down today and replacing hose from cock to strainer and strainer to pump and pump to engine.might disconnect pump and force water through engine(fresh) and give strainer a good clean.
giving myself bet chance of avoiding another failure.
-
thanks I/T will check,no harm in replacing hose.
-
no it was fynspray on a yanmar $94 for new impeller.crazy
-
was unsure how old the previous impeller was so fitted a new one, same connections on suck/outlet,cannot understand why new impeller only lasted a short time.
yes water was on as we had motored for 1.5hrs,sat at rest for 2hrs so cannot understand why? only thing that comes to mind is a bag or something got stuck on inlet under hull when started motor? tend to think manufacturing fault but who knows one of life's little mysteries
-
replaced my impeller and have done it in after 20hrs running, took back to manufacturer and they gave a bit of a run around.
Last sunday motored down panmure river water coming out of exhaust, ran for 1.5hrs, 2 hrs later started motor up and no water, bugger, pulled pump apart and found when turning pump impeller stayed put but shaft and brass insert of impeller turned, what would cause this?
luckily member of c/g and towed us home and safely on mooring,(wind and outgoing tide same way so sailing up not really a option)
Manufacturer said worn (really 20hrs)overheated no water?something lodged in impeller(no we have a onboard strainer)
check water from seacock plenty coming in,checked strainer inside, full of water, checked inlet water, checked outlet water.disconnected outlet and blew, motor clear.
brought new and fitted new impeller and no problems now.
Suspect manufacturing fault?
Thoughts please.

one thing coming in to a bay at night(1.00am)making noise, bit of a no no. coming in to a bay and finding a raft, well expect noise and find yourself a new bay.Generally most parties quiet down by 11.00 from my experience.
-
would it have been the same response if p/w had been anchored earlier, and partied to 1.00am?or is it the fact she came in to a quiet bay and woke several up?
-
now how would a electric motor go with running freezer?are these motors different to cars, cars seem to me you have to plug in to charge, what do you do with a electric boat motor when battery needs charging and your drifting?are they different and charge themselves through a alternator/generator?
are there any ships running on them?if not there may lie the answer.
-
ralf sawell never believed in motors even though he had one in ripple, they cause electrolysis, necessary evil he called them.

seem to recall they showed winter and summer trawl lines
winter went from Takatu pt to the happy jacks and summer line Takatu point to end of Cape Colville.
Could be completely wrong but do recall seeing them marked on a chart
Thank You

After a 1960 to 1970 Approaches to Auckland Chart. Buy Or borrow
Not for navigational purposes but there is some information on them that does not appear on modern charts
Maybe someone may know where/who to try
Thank You
Not urgent but yesterday will be fine

rang yanmar today to find out exactly what i should do,forward neutral or reverse gear. being a yanmar with their box they firmly believe neutral. different yanmar sites confirmed this. yet kiwi prop says keep in forwards.
Auto rotation can be initiated by many things from fouling of the blades - barnacles etc to picking up a piece of seaweed on a blade.
It is for that reason we recommend leaving the unit in forward once feathered to prevent any further rotation.
Reverse should always be avoided because if the unit - or any type of prop - fixed / feathering / auto prop were to engage and slowly rotate the motor over as compression was lost in each cylinder in turn it is possible for the engine to suck back seawater from the exhaust lock … enough said.
http://www.kiwiprops.co.nz/cms/index.php/resources-general/sailing-in-gear
gets awfully complicated
-
when did this incident take place? it was dark at 5.30pm? or should it be 5.30am?
-
I believe it is best to sail in neutral as water pressure while in gear works/shudders the box and causes damage.
Too old to sail?
