  1. I have a cracked alternator bracket, its cast and has been welded already.  Its been suggested that further welding isn't likely to be that great.  Tired the Engine Room but they have a different bracket and don't have any suggestions on this one.

Thought I would try here before getting something made...

  2. I thought their store was in Wellington. I might have my retailers mixed up though.

that would be Barton Marine (physical store) and Discount marine is their on-line store

  3. L

Unless you have a tri lite.

So an all round white at the masthead plus port and starboard at the bow for motoring, then a trilite for sailing means you can do away with the stern light at deck level altogether (if under 12m)

Bugger it, I’ll remove the stern light as well.

    true

  4. Always wondered when I see ships anchored out side out place or off rangi what are they carrying , what’s under them that’s introducing its self to nz , I wonder if the authority’s dive the anchoring zone of rangi and see what’s growing there from the ships .

there are annual surveys done around most ports, wharves etc to identify and track and pest species, not sure if they extend to checking anchorages, MPI should be able to answer that

  5. Mana to the sounds is not that bad, I've done in a boat slower than a weta,(see my photo) also had the benefit of a motor when the wind died and easy to adjust sail.

If you can get it delivered I would talk to the freight office at StraitNZ (Bluebridge) you need the freight part not  the Bluebridge passenger side.

Mana cruising club is a good idea too.

  6. Balance the equation. Coastguard used to comprise of volunteer boats and crews who dedicated a large amount of time, effort and probably personal finance to provide a great service which, in my memory, was largely found not to be wanting. Volunteer boats used to strategically place themselves around the gulf at crucial times, hence the Coastguard moorings in a lot of prime anchorages. Timely and efficient assistance could be given at a reasonable cost.

Coastguard chose to become more professional with dedicated rescue vessels and professionally qualified skippers (needed if boats were considered "commercial") The volunteer boats were squeezed out.

Can only talk about Auckland with any knowledge.

Maybe Coastguard  can't have it both ways.

The volunteer boats where used in a non-personal way and so were considered as commercial.  Dedicated boats enabled better equipment levels and training which  was good.  The costs of dedicated boats has continued to increase.   The fact most of them have been required to get passenger survey is, in my opinion, ridiculous and I suspect adds more in fees that this latest fee hike has.

If they are paying an additional $20,000 I wonder what the base level of fees is.....

    Good luck to them.

  7. no, those lights are absolutely correct.

the discussion was around the option of having an allround white at the masthead for anchor or steaming & Stern.

You still need a stern light for when you are sailing.

So is it completely wrong to show a steaming light, port and starboard on the pulpit (correct sectors) and a stern light in a yacht under 12 metres if motoring?

  8. sometime that happens because there is a lack of nationwide directive and at a local level "doing nothing" is not considered a reasonable option.  For anything in relation to ships, big or small, moving around the country its usually not a good approach.....

Interesting article on the stuff website about biofouling and commercial shipping.

I personally think it is stupid that individual regional councils set the rules locally, rather than a nationwide directive.

  9. What a palava...anyway couldn't find my old call sign so went for a new one.

    • Ended up at - http://www.callsigns.co.nz/
    • Entered details, DNA sample, 2019 Profit and loss statement plus a 50 page dissertation on why 4 digit callsigns cause climate change or so it seems it wanted so much.
    • Paid $35 for new custom call sign ($30 if you want auto generated) which apparently automatically comes with a MMSI.
    • Will be emailed to me shortly it reckons.

    We'll see.

Interested to hear how that works out,I have looked at that site before and it seems quite dated...

  10. if its quite a short one, i thought they could be used when the pole was right forward on the forestay.  The Whisker pole went out at right angles on the mast to give the guy some angle on the main pole

  11. Talking about visiting this summer. I've never been there. In fact ice only been to the south island once before.

Great idea, just bear in mind that summer can be a bit later down this way, from about Christmas onwards, usually anyway...

  12.

If you have a receiver, you will see the AtoN's on your plotters in real time. That will give you accurate distance off etc, and makes for safer navigation. AtoN's can also broadcast additional data - tide rates, wind speed and dir, phone numbers, whatever the owners wish you to know.

Most AIS receivers and Transponders now can "see" AtoNs. Some may require updated software to do so. Many new VHF radios now have AIS receivers.

At this stage it seems few units can see the weather data transmitted by AIS, and that includes  Class A.  Like being able to AtoN this will come to more units over time I suspect.

  13. the tonnage fee, if based on measurement, is likely to be a volume measurement rather than the displacement.

Roughly the cargo carrying volume of the boat based on the number of French wine barrel's you could cram into it

  14. He's received a higher sentence than a wife beater, for what, learning how to sail?

Am I correct that he didn't call for or request rescue? the Police Launch in Wellington came up because of 'reports' of a boat struggling. He had no communications gear onboard, so was not able to put rescuer's at risk by calling for rescue himself.

So far this year how many people have died by suicide, 600? 1,000? This guy put himself at risk, and attracts the time and energy of a government department. There are literally thousands of people with mental health issues begging for help, but can't get it.

Maritime NZ should be shut down, and the budget transferred to health.

if you want to view it as a suicide attempt and think that is ok, then yes you may have a point.  I suspect that wasn't his plan as there must be easier ways....

The 'report' came from several non-government types that are well acquainted with yachts and the sea and it too him about 4 hours to sail out of Evans bay in a 12 knot northerly from memory.   He may not have been able to call for help but that does't preclude a search being started.  There were many people involved who,  I suspect, would not have slept well had he disappeared never to be seen again.

I'm not commenting on the fine or comparative use of government funds, just a few facts around this particular incident.

  15. Why this particular vessel, when on any given day there are vessels all over the gulf in worst state of repair going about there lawful business and no one says boo.

that particular boat was looking a lot worse than that when in Wellington, and I am guessing his sailing ability (read that as " knowing that the halyard has to be tight") improved somewhat during his time sailing around Wellington harbour.

and the reality at the time was he was likely to head out into cook strait to become the target of a Search & Rescue mission.
