  1. It is my right to have an explanation as to why the bill was double his estimate that he gave me.

I agree - and If you don't get any explanation, you should pay whatever you feel is fair, and don't give him any explanation for why you paid what you paid!

  2. What is the deal with 'borrowing' moorings like this for a short term (ie not leaving the boat),

Ok to pick up an empty one to stop for lunch?

What about a snooze overnight? Obviously, you'd have to move when the owner comes along..

Is there some sorta unwritten rule?

  3. Sounds like a plan Winter - you'd just want to be satisfied that the B&G motor control is going to be compatible with your autopilot. IT might be in a better position to comment on that one.

Oh its not. Its going to involve some hackery driving relays etc to the hacked open tiller pilot

b&g want me to buy their spenny actuator

  4. This is a cool project. I've been considering going the other way. I want the expensive B&G autopilot computer, but i want the same cheap tiller pilot actuator.

I think the b&g unit just has relay outputs , one for each direction of rudder.

I've been considering wiring these up to a butchered tiller pilot with DIY rudder feedback like you've done

That way I get their fancy tech for control (can control AP from Chartplotter or wireless remote)  but with an affordable actuator (old tillerpilot)

  5. I don't know the answer, but I recently had my hull reglued to the tubes on my rib. It came back incredibly clean. I guess they have to do a good clean to make things stick, but this thing really looks like new.

I should have asked them what they used

  6. Thanks mate, those are good questions, the above is probably an example of what I am looking for.

I didnt even know there was push button masts etc, so no Im not an expert yet, just grew up sailing p class and optimist and always had a lazer. Then we had a trailer sailer. None of which was fancy.

Out of curisosity what is an example of electric mast and winche models? (never say never but I figure its one more electronics to go wrong)

Clearly the easier to control everything from the back is more desirable especially when we get older.

I saw that Bendy boat on youtube that couple was sailing around the world, I think its a 43ft Beneteau, La Vagabonde (the lucky devils just got sponsored with a $1m new French Cat, forget the brand).

Anyway their setup is  the kind of thing Im looking for.

I like the more modern interiors, really dont the old ruby red and lauquered wood look, mags me gag. Some of the newer young boats have nice curves inside, but they are more racing focussed so might not be suited?

Anyway, what models should I be looking for in a cruise boat of around $70k that would suit sailing around the BOI and up and down the coast to the Hauraki and outside of the coromandel?

Is 40ft overkill, would 32ft be comfortable enough?

    Hi TwoSail

that boat (la vagabonde) is on the hard in Whangarei. I chatted to Riley & Elayne last month when they were here. They indicated they would sell it here or possibly raffle it off.

I suspect you will hear very soon their plans for that boat.

Here is a list of the same model for sale (Cyclades 43.4) http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/category/type/Beneteau/Cyclades+43.4

  7. Yes, central control, and node controler for each light. Generally a heavy ring main power cable around the boat. Any device connected to that rather than running back to the distribution panel. It can save a huge amount of cabling if properly designed. No fuses, virtual fuses, any physical switch can be programmed for any function. Momentary press can do one thing, double press another, hold for a third. Very versatile and easy to expand. However, retrofitting, as you may imagine is a big job. Can and should be considered if you are considering a complete rewire.

Sounds like you are describing 'Czone' or other NMEA2000 switching systems.

NMEA-2000 after all, is actually CAN bus.

The BEP Czone stuff is kiwi designed.. Looks awesome, until you see the price.

  8. I have put the opti up my mast recently and swapped out the fat dc cable with some which was maybe 1/4 the Gauge. Its absolutely tiny. Ill go look what awg it is. This is at 12v with no issues.

Those optis will produce the same light output down to 9v or so

  9. weekend achievements - I took the boat out in darkness for the first time.  Motoring only. Anchored in the dark.  Didn't hit anything! :)

Had three sets of eyes keeping lookout and AIS, felt like I could have done with a hundred more. The lights in the harbour are so busy!

  10. This is correct Chris.

Sometimes they can be fooled with a resistor of the correct value across the correct pins of the USB..

    EG : http://www.instructables.com/id/Cheap-and-simple-USB-car-fast-charger-mod/

However it seems that Samsung/ Apple/  et all are all doing things their own way - so you'll need to find the correct method of tricking it for your particular device.

One answer is perhaps just get a tiny inverter only big enough for your charger (or two) like a 150W job.. plug your AC charger in here.

It will use more power than the equiv DC-DC, but at least it is plug and play.

  11. Yeah, only looked on my phone last night - on the PC the misalignment of the new mount is obvious. What does the other side look like? It could be a whole engine alignment issue, not just one mount. Normally/often the type of mounts shown are slotted at one end? It is important to get a alignment right, or either the rubber, the vulcanizing, or the mount bolt will break over time.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure I need to replace the other 3 - they are all pretty old and tired and who knows what state the rubber is in.

This one is slotted one end and holed at the other. Still a bit of wiggle room in the hole end too.

I've just looked up the part number the yanmar man sold me and online it seems to be referred to as a 'Rear' engine mount.. I've stuck it in the front!  Think that matters? at $330odd each,  I was not in a hurry to do all four

  12. With all the information provided above... How does Knot Me stay in business?

Because during the previous couple of weeks I've been into most of the big name swindlery's looking for this sort of information, and there was none forthcoming.

Consequently, KM will now receive my business. :)
