  1. One of the sad things about these events is the uninformed and inane chatter on the internet that follows in the period of time where no details are known of what actually happened.
  2. We have copper coat and are very happy with it. The main reason its not used everywhere, I believe, is that the hull needs to be completely cleaned back to apply it, meaning applying it is a major. If most people already have a preferred type of AF, they may have some motivation to change, but not enough to tackle what is a much bigger job than just putting on another coat of the existing between tides. Basically cost and effort is a barrier to entry. Also, it doesn't actually suit everyone, for various subtle reasons.

    New winches...

He have 40's for primaries (Harken, don't get Harken, wish we'd got the Andersons in the first place) they work fine, when its a bit blow you have to use both hands to get the sail in the last little bit obviously. Boat is 37 ft - 6 ton with a similar sized head sail, maybe slightly bigger for our #1 J is 4.8, LP 6.4, so I think the #1 is around 40 m2 Foretriangle = 31 m2
  4. Another photo of said motor. Also, apparently the boat is actually made from macrocarpa. What is the chances of that? I understand kahikatea was used when kauri became unavailable, aka white pine. But macrocarpa? it makes great firewood...
  5. Apparently the motor has B.M.S Commodore on the side, anyone ever heard of that? Has been repainted blue, so not the original colour. The boat went into the shed 25 years ago so I'm assuming the engine is of that era.
  6. The blue metal bit in the middle, any details on that?
  7. Today the government announced $857 million dollars to fund a new computer at IRD, bringing the total new computer budget to something like $1.4 billion. The fact of the matter is there current computer still works fine, it's just that technology has come along so far that IRD and the government now want a computer that is really good at siphoning data out of just about every source you can think of, and matching it. And now they are building it. And how do the government get a return on this $857 million (or $1.4 bil)? By tracking down old guys who've gone sailing and donging the

    Next project.

I've ordered the plans for the Skylark 4', and a book on building in the stitch and glue method. Now my only challenge is getting the shed tidy enough for a small and simple project.

    Next project.

The Clipper, I'm busy reading up on the details of the construction methods. That Skylark 4' sure does look like a good sized boat for the kids to learn to row in.

    Next project.

Hi Clipper, What do you call that dinghy, and where do you get the plans from? And also, what would be an appropriate age to start kids in dinghies (buy themselves)? I've been pondering making a dinghy for my kids, and my three year old likes the look of your one. She says she would sit in the middle, and her little brother can sit in the front (might help I showed her it and asked if she wanted one....) She likes rowing our deflatable, but its way too big and we don't actually go anywhere. I'm keen to make a 'kids sized' dinghy, just for her that she could actually row buy hersel
  11. I see that the Y88's and F1020's have their own start and generally do the shorthaul course, i.e. for the 50 and 60 they do shorthaul. For the 100, they do the small boat course, substantially shorter than the shorthaul course Is that a typo / error? Or is this stocking the 88's verse Ross boats argument and the 88's can't handle the jandal? For the other shorthaul boats, the 88's and 1020's make up a good number of boats to play with. It would be a shame they do a different course for the 100.
  12. There is a boat 'parked' next to the Northern Motorway. On first glance it looks like an innovative new anchoring spot, but it is likely it has broken from a mooring and drifted up on the tide. Its location is in the tidal creek that crosses under the Northern Motorway, just south of the Esmonde Rd on ramp. It is resting on the bank beside mangroves, in a tidal channel. The boat has a small orange mooring buoy it is attached to in the water, so not on an anchor but a mooring buoy, likely broken free below the water line. Description: Looks like an H28, or similar, same size and era. W
  13. All 'they've' done is not issues a certificate, a piece of paper. No one is stopping him going sailing - his boat isn't impounded or physically chained up (like they do in some jurisdictions). The guys on Bersek had a great time without a piece of paper (before they drowned), and Swirly World had some great adventures, without requiring various pieces of paper. So fill your boots.

    Question

Forgive my ignorance, but what's happened to Nexus? Is the gear and support still available?
  16. Well based on the great outcry on this forum regarding the trampling of human rights and age discrimination, based on one line in a trade me add, it would appear the consensus is that if some guy wants to take a rusty hulk with 500 tones of bunker oil into the Southern Ocean / Antarctica / the Falklands, then that is his choice. But be careful, it sounds like you are putting a counter argument, and it might just have some logic behind it. Before you know it, you will demonstrate the practical need for permits and bureaucratic control.
  17. Love you cat photos Rigger. Sorry I bored you Scottie, its difficult to entertain the facebook generation Wheels, I agree with everything you are saying. I just thought it would be fun to highlight the double standards of jumping to conclusions. Thanks for your help with that. And I whole heartedly agree with an individuals right to do what they want. I have no problem with yachts like Berserk heading down to Antartica. If their boat sinks and they all drown (oh that's right), that is their problem. I see some parallels to this situation and Swirly World, who did some really amaz
  18. So I was thinking $19k for an offshore capable boat sounds like a bargain. Just the life raft is worth $2k. Which got me looking... Only two working sails, being a main and furling headsail. Also a tri sail and storms sail, as required for cat 1. Not sure how you set a storm sail on the forestay with a furler. Based on the photos you can't set a bob stay as the dinghy takes the whole foredeck. I would want some redundancy in sails if I were heading to the Falklands via Cape Horn. Only 45 l water tank age, plus containers. Wouldn't want to get thirsty enroute to the Falklands. 75 l fuel,
  19. Gee wiz, golly gosh, that sounds a hell of a lot like the other side of the story...And much more substantive than one line in a trademe ad. Riot averted. Only on the Internet, quick, someone post some photos of cats so we have something else pointless to move onto. (PS doesn't rigger have some nice fluffy cats?)
  20. Until you get some facts as to what the actual story is, all this is just noise.
  21. Good to see everyone is getting so fired up about one line in a trademe add. I wouldn't have thought that is even half the story. Admittedly in sounds like an interesting story, but not enough of the story for us to decide we need to start a riot. Guess it is the internet. Tomorrow we might get some nice pictures of cats.

    Fast 40

I got an IRC certificate once, for my 30 yr old kauri log. Having raced extensively under IRC in the UK, and wanting to support the move away from performance handicapping, about the time when there was a glimmer of interest in IRC in NZ. I may have well just masturbated with a cheese grater, it was slightly amusing but mainly painful. It cost a lot of rum tokens, and the only other boats racing with it it were worth 4 to 8 times the value of mine, and had sail wardrobes that more closely resembled Amelda Marcos's shoe collection... Basically an arms race for the latest 'optimized' Eu
  23. Hi Partisan, I think that is a good call on a lot of fronts. Considering you already have a shiny, near new Beta engine (of which I am a little jealous, and have looked into closely to buying, accept in 35 hp), changing it out wouldn't have been so great. From an environment a point of view, I understand the desire to do without oil / hydrocarbons, but the project to change to an electric drive would have resulted in the consumption of a lot of new goods. I don't think the reduction In use of deisel would have offset the additional consumption of stuff to install the electric drive, more so
  24. You can get an electric outboard for $200 or $300 dollars. One of these would have the electric motor directly driven off the prop, meaning you wouldn't get all the gearbox and 90 bend losses. The total drag and losses would be substantially less. You'd just need to bastardise the top part (controls etc) and wire up appropriate wiring and regulator etc. Given the possible cost of bits and pieces for modifying the old outboard, getting a $250 electric outboard to test the theory could be worth it. I would think the success of the project is all about the losses, efficiency and ability to
