  1. It's the old  story of supply and demand. Today's throw away society with planned obsolescence means I want it now ,I want it all done for me and I have to work to get the money to pay .Consequently I don't have time for all those things that require my effort .Participation actively in most sports / activities is in sharp decline. Add to this the disconnection between Admin and participants and you have the situation summed up. Golf , motor racing ,rugby sailing to name a few examples

  2. C.G is too structured and bureaucratic.Seem to always be on the make for money. In short a modern day "Dad's Army" that appears over resourced. Not to say some of what they do is not worthwhile. A lot of their hierarchy are ex Police , Navy / Army and that possibly explains some of this. I fear the day they turn up to rescue me.seems they really lack people with recreational boating experience.( Marina based craft ).Lastly the constant babble of trip reports on VHF means switch off VHF.On our Coastal passages we don't listen.

  3. OK...so that's the other side of the story...or is it ? We still don't know what went down ,only that one bureaucracy upheld the decision of another.Gee that's unusual.McCarthyism. Who is saving who from what? A few years ago we helped a foreign sailor preparing for his onward voyage to Chile.Boat was 8.5 metre bowsprit, bumpkin,no lifelines,no radio but reasonably well found. He packed empty plastic milk bottles in the quarter berths and well screwed down the bunktops. That was his 'liferaft'.YNZ wouldn't have cleared it for a voyage to Izzy Bay probably yet he had come from Europe.I get very uneasy about the 'we know what's best for you but I can't tell the detail for privacy reasons ' explanations....it might be my turn next !....

  4. It appears from the Trade Me ad that once again big brother in the form of YNZ (inspectors this time) step in and interfere with an individuals life.Yes and the safety and health bullshit placing liability on the inspector probably features too. Interpretation of rules like this should be enforced on people who don't know what they are doing...for instance loss of catamaran Katipo at Whitianga a couple of months ago where a voyage to Nelson required no inspection or officialdom involvement but if racing needed Cat.2.Pure bullshit rules..We have allowed too much invasion of our lives by the bully boys who want to,and are, controlling what the populace does.Like others have said, just go.What are they going to do to an aged sailor anyway? Put him in gaol ?....

  5. It's the vested interest thing going on here.Planned obsolescence at it's best.Follow the money trail backwards to find out how it got to this.I recently observed 20 yr old flares let off.But the need for flares has always been questionable. The  other part of the equation is that someone has to be looking .As noted previously all this sort of mindless regulation chased plenty of us away from racing our boats. But we still cruise the same waters quite OK without all the up to date gear....Go figure

  6. I've tried  a lot of  different antifouling paint over many years boating.. Singapore with a handful of DDT was good.Moved on with  all the 'latest and greatest' through the years.Epiglass,International,Hempels (lasted 3 months) Warpaint and others I've forgotten most times having to go back to the bare hull and start again. 7 years ago we went back for the last time. Not doing that agai come what may..2 coats of Interprotect and about 3 o fMicron 66.Just one antifoul recoat 31/2 yrs ago and will probably do it again next winter.Yes I look after it with regular wipes with a sponge but look at the upside. No annual sanding, masking, painting slipping etc.Micron 66 is a bargain for me plus a superb finish. And no ,I have no financial interest or other incentive to support Micron 66

  7. The law is an ass. Scott Watson convicted...no bodies.Peter Ellis convicted on fairy tales.Arthur Thomas convicted  assisted with planted evidence. McDonald found not guilty of murder. The Burdett conviction (can't remember his name) The fisherman (Rex somebody) convicted of murder. Here we have the yacht that an Insurance company paid out on apparently. And clearly the Harlech. Who said crime doesn't pay ? Next he will be sueing NSW Govt.for wrongful arrest. You would think he would have to prove ownership via his Customs clearance papers which he obviously didn't have.Illegal importation of goods. etc.etc....the list goes on

  8. This correspondence clearly outlines the two positions. One side wants to dictate to the other which wants to use their brains.A lot of people who die in water don't drown. It's  exposure that does the damage  and all the lifejacket does  means it's easy to find the body. As others said  lifejackets are not a panacea to all  situations at sea and sometimes exacerbate a  situation (getting out from under for example). The pointy heads, know alls and do gooders should mind their own business ,wear their lifejackets and leave the rest of us alone. But as Regional Councils etc need to justfy their existence expect constant attack on our personal freedoms and the fees  and fines they will try to generate and lifejackets are a starting point.

  9. At long last Jim Young's book is published. An excellent read and a wonderful panorama of NZ yachting history.Interesting outline from a non PC viewpoint .So for those real yachties from now ,then and yesteryear this is a must read.!

  10. It's all about control of the masses.Taking away freedoms, imposing licensing  which means more taxing and fees. The momentum of this tactic is increasing as todays modern generation get used to being manipulated and exploited. It's been a sad fact that throughout the ages 3% or thereabouts of the population live off the other 97% through fear, intimidation, war, manipulation , control ,greed and envy..This legislation is just a variation on the theme of control factors ranging from religion, debt, class structures, poverty and violence to name some the world has suffered and is suffering from.

  11. Anti-fouling.....Micron 66. We're getting 3 years plus. After 3+ yrs re-sprayed high wear areas and that was almost 2 yrs ago.We do look after it wiping it carefully on a regular basis. Not cheap but extremely cost effective, considering annual antifoul costs (masking, prep, haulout application etc.) So less hassle and a great finished surface. And no, don't work for them, sell it or any other association with the company.
