    I'd pick the GBE for harbor racing, and the bigger tri for longhaul like the coastal

     

    Searching for farrier here https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/boat-search throws up quiet a few boats I've not seen on the racecourse that might be worth pursuing

  2. There's not many Tris around, but there are a couple , I did a fair bit of research last year before I bought mine (Lucifer)

     

    There is a lot of variability in the F32's from very tepid heavy cruisrrs to striped out racers depending on which end of the spectrun you want. Just remember they will almost all be slower that hooters

  3. Hyper was for sale a little while ago in the bay of islands, no too slow, enclosed head, pretty dry I would think but needed some TLC. not sure what happened or if it sold.

    There's a couple of racey ones around that could be had for a reasonable offer, but won't have the enclosed head.

     

    Depending on your budget, there are quite a few options out of Australia, but if you can't sail it here the shippings costs start to add up pretty quickly.

     

    Does it have to be a tri? There are a couple of Cats around that could fit the bill

  5. The top mast side stays also come into play when you start running bigger square head mains upwind and close reaching.

    A bit of adjustment is good to keep the mast straight, especially with the older smaller sections.

    They do see a bit of load, if I remember correctly we had 12:1 purchase, but this was achieved with two cascades and a 3:! purchase.

    The leeward shroud will always be slack, not much can be done about that on GBE.

    Never mind mussel farms there are a heap of fan worm farms about,

     

    And despite the increasing prices there are still significant numbers of very neglected boats preventing others from entering the marina. Given they now have a waiting list is it time to find a mechanism to help people into berths?

  7. Interesting comparing the 12m multihull stern-to rate with monohull-no finger... $604.50 multi vs $790.50 mono, a 30% premium for less real estate? What am I missing?

    Water, there is only about 500mm of water infront of the berths facing z pier on a good low tide and is never dredged

  8. The regs tell you what gear you need(Depth soundet fixed vhf charts etc etc). Just as critical though is to understand what you will do if things go bad.

     

    When the boat is upside down how exactly do you get to the grab bag? If you need to be recovered by coastguard are things like wallets keys and phones in the grab bag?

     

    If the rig had come down do you have the right tools to easily cut it away?

     

    Can every one on the boat do everything? I.e. If the helm goes over board can the crew stop the boat, drop sails and back track effectively even though it's blowing 25 kts?

     

    These questions and others like them have a different answer on each boat, have a good sus about how our will work for you.

  9. Personally, I think Cat 3 without a raft is safer than Cat 4 plus a raft.

    There are a few middle distance races around now that are Cat 4 plus a raft. (SSANZ mainly, but that initiative is also to encourage entries without the need for a CAT 3 inspection)

     

    I think peoples psychological dependence on rafts comes from back in the 50's and 60's when people used to drift around an ocean for weeks on end, often up to 150 days, in liferafts. Obviously those were the days that didn't have any means of communication, let alone fast boats (i.e. Coastguard / Police launch / Navy) or rescue helicopters. The wide range of reliably, affordable electronic communications changes the paradigm completely.

     

    Another big difference between then and now is the prevalence of carvel planked boats. Spring a plank and you'd go down very fast. There are practically no carvel planked boats now, esp not racing, so boats just don't sink like they used to.

    Just for clarity, the SSANZ triple series races dont need a raft, they are cat 4+, but the plus is not a raft. The route 66 was an example of cat4+ a liferaft

  10. Spinlock discounts weren't great at all, tiller extension down from $500 to $456. On the shelf at Burnsco $399.

    Not only on the shelf, but on the website with free delivery. Sailors corner were over 10 years behind with their website.

     

    But as mentioned above this liquidation wasn't about financial reasons. 

  11. I'm not saying its no good, it will certinaly be a fun boat to sail, and Grainger has a good track record of race boats.

    Its just if someone here coughed up for one thinking it would be the fastest thing in the small multi fleet they could be in for a bit of a surprise

  12. In anything over 10kts it would get owned upwind and down by the 8.5s (yeah yeah, provided there are any racing).

    Jib tack is 1.7m back from the bows, and a non overlapper, and the prod is a m shorter than the 8.5's

     

    livewire sails sizes vs. 8.5

    Main both 35m2

    Jib  11, vs a NO1 at 23m2 and a no2 at 14. 11 is likely the size of the no.3

    C0 dont have numbers off hand

    Kite 50m2 vs around 80 for a typical 8.5m

     

    Still weighs about the same, maybe a fraction lighter. Buy an 8.5, it would be much cheaper, a bit quicker and you can do coastal on it
