On the plus side i got over 3k for it running in the boat, would reach within 100rpm of WOT and didn't smoke but the bolt on bits ruined it
That's the best strategy for sure, sell while it is still running and there is always someone prepared to pay a couple of grand. I did the same when I got rid of the VW Golf diesel (now that was an orphan!) out of my yacht a few years ago

Looking at buying a boat with a 30 year old raw water cooled Volvo 27hp engine. Want to get it checked first.
Should I just get Ovlov to give it a look-over, or are there better people to use?
Also is a compression test and oil analysis necessary, or would just a WOT test be sufficient?Any recommendations?
If it is a raw water cooled Volvo it is possibly getting closer to 40 yrs old.
Whether 30 or 40 yrs old it will be on it's last legs and an inspection will probably tell you the same. Ask when the exhaust injection elbow was last replaced (if ever).
If the engine starts ok and does not smoke alot, it will still have some life in it. Oil analysis needs to be carried out over a period of usage/oil changes to be an effective tool. Ask when the exhaust injection elbow was last replaced (if ever).
If it runs ok I would forgo spending money on an inspection and put that towards the new engine fund

Diesel heaters all sold out at the moment... Think there are a few Eberspachers, but they are $$$. Or you can brave a Chinese one for $300.
or the Russian ones if anyone sells them here
quite funny to read their warning of counterfeit copies when their's is a knock off of the Eberspachers

Classic, so you can cruise Fiji, but you aren't allowed off your boat, including at uninhabited islands (accept at your port of entry).
I can see some issues with implementing that. No walks on the beach. No buying food?
I wonder if snorkelling is permitted? maybe if you don't land on the beach?
if you read this as well, https://www.denaraumarina.com/covid-19/ it would appear a boat clearing into Denerau is restricted to Viti Levu, and maybe you cannot even go shopping in Lautoka. Agree with various comments that Fiji is not the place to be this year, in particular out of respect for the locals who if the virus gets away on them are going to have their hands full.
This is the cat I was asking Boo Boo about, looks like they have just pulled out of Minerva heading south.
https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/Curiosity
The boat has alot of issues, they want a very settled passage south..

I know of a yacht currently just going past the kermedec islands on it's way to NZ. Passing right through the middle of that frontal system. Dont think it's going to be a very nice few days for them. Potentially extremely nasty even.
Is it that Youtube cat coming from Tonga? That's not a place I would want to be right now. I would be heading WNW at slow speed for a couple of days until this system passes thru, then come back on course - mid week should see better conditions. Looks too much like the conditions in which we saw Essence lost

Hopefully Fiji will be open when they get there.
they departed with the advice from the Fijian govt that the Blue Lane entry is still available. All did Virus tests before leaving.

As long as nothing changes while they are at sea...

speaking of cruising there are about 7-8 boats on their way to Fiji, all left last Tuesday. Fleet includes Fusio, Caro Vita, Sula II and Australian cat Indigo II. They are just about level with the bottom of Ne wCal but feeling this weather , eg
as Fusio posted does not matter too much whether they spend their quarantine time at sea or on the hook

The Captains of that boat appear to have been previously well seasoned:
https://sv-footprint.blogspot.com/
Lots of cruising since 2008, did loose one previous Cat that Jack-Line insurance made a 100% cover on when winds reversed on them at anchor and waves developed when anchored in 2.5 meter depth in Itally, boat washed ashore and was deemed a total loss. They have done more long distance sailing than we have and their experience covers a wide range of territory. They had the experience to have know to avoide this so the back story to why they left harbor would be of enormous interest to me.
Did not pick up before that it was Begonia. Met them in Vanuatu in 2019, very nice couple. Have done alot of miles on that cat including NZ directly to Chile and return via French Polynesia.
Their Cat is a FP Mahe 36 with small engines, certainly not for bar bashing on a day like that, that's what Shark Cats were built for

Why would you even try it in the first place?

Just heard that Heather passed away a week ago
https://www.sail-world.com/news/237840/Top-offshore-navigator-and-sailor-passes-away
sincere condolences to John (Fossil), Kevin and Duthie.
Heather was an integral part of putting NZ ocean racing capability on the world map and in her time was NZ's no 1 offshore navigator

currently forecast to hang around well into next week

These guys have been recommended to me, not used them yet
https://progressiveelectroplaters.co.nz/
not easy to find good chrome platers now that all cars have plastic bumpers

just note Clive lives in Taupo so you would need to find out when he is passing by. He comes to Sandspit a couple of times a year to do EWOF's and tagging.

What design is this? Whats the draft with keel up?
Farr 13.99 but actually 14.5m - bit of builders licence used. Draft is 1.5m board up. Wrote a bit about her and sister ships here

Good info thanks Jon
Yes I can see water capacity being the next hurdle! One reason I don't want an instant water heater. At least with a cylinder it kind of 'Polices' shower durations. Have a 12 yo boy who finds comfort in Long meditation sessions in the shower at home, we are on tank water so wears a bit thin!
We survived 5 xmas cruises with no pressure water and a 20L water tank, splashed out and put 100L bladder in the 930 last year and I swear it lasted about the same time. The new boat appears to have about 270L and I wager once the tribe get used to pressure water and hot showers it'll probably need refilling after 4 days 😅
My shower water drains into a sump with a float activated discharge pump. Rule is when the pump comes on, about 2 minutes, that's the end of your shower😀

$20 and no installation, sorted!
Solar Shower - Army & Outdoors (armyandoutdoors.co.nz)
Can get surprisingly warm if you leave them in the sun all day.
the other option is a visit to your local Mitre 10/Bunnings and buy the bits to make one of these
if there is limited sun just boil the kettle to get the right temp. Paint it black so you can leave it in the sun to warm up on a sunny day

One of the items on Mrs FLC wishlist for the new boat is a hot shower.
I'm not keen on gas califonts inside hulls, we don't have the battery capacity for an instant electric water heater so I'm left looking at engine heated storage/supply options.
I understand cylinders ideally need to be lower than but close the motor, so I'm thinking of putting something in the pantry aft of galley (Farr 1020)
Engine is Yanmar 3ym 20
Anyone had good/bad experiences with particular brands/models?
Thinking 25/30 litre. (We aren't in a Marina so not fussed on 240v backup types)
Cheers
The cylinder does not need to be lower than the engine, the water pump will push the coolant around just fine.
Here is another potential supplier
https://www.superheat.co.nz/marine-water-cylinders/
Fridgetech are the distributors for Isotemp.
Best to get a copper pressure cylinder, you will need to add a pressure reducing valve in the supply line

The 2020 and 2030's were Shibaura engines imported and marinised by Perkins. The Volvo D series are the product of the Perkins/Shibaura JV, with engines assembled in Perkins UK factory.
How many know that the Volvo MD22/ Perkins Prima was based on the Leyland "O" series engine, which originally appeared in motoring legends such as the Austin Maxi, later versions of the Morris Marina (the only worse English car of that time I can remember was the Hillman Avenger) and later the Austin Princess🤣 . Perkins made the diesel conversion to go in the Austin Maestro
