  1. ..nearly got my Hf set up installed...transcevier second hand...tuner new...antenna...a mystery of gob smaking proportions... The rule it seems is simple for HF marine....as long as possible and as high as possible....but keep it away from anything else that conducts... ...another brain bash over coffee tmmrw. To backstay or to whip that is the question...but lo...there is others....alternate backstay doth profess to whip backstay in terms of dollars........oh dollars...how much force your argument does make.......
  2. ...cant remember where (somebody help?) but some islands wont refill your bottles full stop...
  3. Ally...Glass...stainlesss....steel... First with ally...we dont have them here. I would want to be so sure that there was no chance of a dissimilar metal contact, that I couldnt have them on my boat. A coin or similar could cause corrosion to a deverstating degree. The risk may be low but .. Glass too expensive for me... Stainless...the same.... I go for steel and own my bottles. I repaint (a quick spray) to keep corrosion low. I chose the ugly route of above deck mounting, rather than vented deck lockers..not a good look on a nice racing boat. We get ten years here be
  4. ....I live next door to the local boat sales (I have to walk through their section of the jetty to get on my boat)...and I can tell you that boat prices here are VERY low. Bringing in a second hand big boat from the states is even cheaper. You can land a big (46 foot) fiz nasty for about $200 K less than the market price. Given say $50K for 110 to 240V conversions, and general repairs and service, it is still a big saving. Small keel boats around the 20 foot mark are just not selling. Even larger ones that need some work are not moving..unless they are very cheap. How cheap ?......I just s
  5. ...all good... the more input the better. I think that we are a little to quiet about our real costs...and I dont understand why ... Scared of the missus ?...worried that you have the cheapest deal in town and they will stick their prices up straight away ? truth is i think there is a lie about boat ownership and quite a few people are paying WAY more than is reasonable.. I dont belive in 'Elite" crap with boat ownership...and until people start to say what charges are realy happeneing then nothing will change. Ok kids...you can by a cheap bomb...go fang it up through the forests f
  6. ...no my boat not broke !.. Costs are from a recent discusion with a mate from Sydney. I am about to get hauled (in an hours time) for a fraction of the Sydney costs. Mid $600 for haul and blast and about $130 per week for the hardstanding.. To put it into perspective , I just had a another friend tell me of $1000 a day with fines of $25000 per can of paint if you use the wrong stuff...in the good old us of a.. I just have a general interest in the cost of boat ownership...
  7. ....well by now you probaly know that I am interested in real numbers... The insurance question didnt get a lot of anwsers... SO...what do you pay for a lift...blast ...and weekly hardstand. Just as important....can you do the work yourself....and live aboard. To put this into perspective...try about $300 a day in Sydney Harbour...and I am pretty sure that you wont be allowed to be a liveaboard.... ..and that seems to be the last marina willing to do it.... Number one rule ???? DONT BREAK DOWN if you are a liveaboard in Sydney. This is a real situation so if you know any diffe

    liveaboard

Pic taken aprox two years ago... Been living on board for several years...(even before she was launched).. 38 foot..great for two up. Would be fine with one or two small kids.. I would go bigger if I had to accomidate teenagers..but they would help in the sailing side of things. As we are empty nestors, this size is a great combination for us. Can be sailed solo (designed that way) Good engine power. Comfortable below decks.
