  1. Caulerpa's spread has some Aotea Great Barrier locals throwing in the towel

Some residents want the island closed entirely to visiting boaties while others say the battle is already lost and restrictions are pointless.

But with the seaweed continuing to spread and the restrictions - known as Controlled Area Notices, or CANs - due to expire at the end of the month, islanders and biosecurity officials have little time to decide their next steps.

A more likely path, depending on the outcome of this week's hui, is to renew and possibly expand the CANs currently in force at Okupu Bay, Tryphena Harbour and Whangaparapara Harbour.

It is believed the green menace is primarily spread by anchors. In suitable conditions a piece of seaweed the size of a pinhead can grow to the size of a football field in just three weeks.

  2. Controversial Kennedy Point marina on Waiheke Island opens today

The marina had 181 berths of which 173 were sold, he said.
Despite being sold, many berths would be available for casual rent because their owners wouldn’t have boats there immediately or continuously, he said.
Berths sell for around $180,000 to $400,000 and the marina is the first on the island.

“Our new system operates like a hotel management system, so people can reserve berths to rent, a bit like Airbnb for boats,” Littlejohn said.
Prices vary on the berth length and season. For a 6m trailer boat or jetski, people would pay $10/hour, the website showed.
For monohull berths, people would pay $63 a day for a 12m berth but up to $308/day for a 30m berth for seven days. Bookings could be made under Harbour Assist, Littlejohn said.

  3. Hauraki Gulf rescue: Yachtsmen pull hypothermic fisherman from water after kayak flips

A hypothermic fisherman who flipped out of his kayak and was tangled in gear was lucky to be discovered by passing yachtsmen and plucked from the Hauraki Gulf.

The man had been in the water for an hour when he was pulled to safety by a group of men returning from a morning sail on Saturday.

The crew took the man to the Milford Cruising Club and got him warm until the ambulance arrived.

Hato Hone St John confirmed they “assessed, treated, and transported one patient in a serious condition to North Shore Hospital.”

“We had just done the last Coastal Classic so my boat Ratcatcher was all kitted out with the best first aid kit and all the hypothermia gear,” Woodward said.

  4. Orakei Local Board Public meeting this Thursday on future of The Landing hardstand

Ōrākei Local Board hold their next meeting this Thursday and the future of the hardstand is top of the agenda. It’s a public meeting open to all.

    Details:
    Thursday 16th November, 3pm
St Chads Church & Community Centre
    40 St. Johns Road
    Meadowbank

The Ōrākei Local Board will receive feedback on their recent public consultation on The Landing. The majority of respondents submitted against the plan and there is a high level of negative public response to the Ōrākei Local Board’s actions regarding their closure of the hardstand.

Auckland Council’s marine biosecurity staff have recommended that the local board consider maintaining a limited area of facilities at the Landing for short stay cleaning and antifoul application. Staff from the Parks and Community Facilities Department also note the biosecurity benefits of a hardstand

Clear public support for a hardstand at The Landing
Results of the Ōrākei Local Board public consultation on retention of the hardstand at Okahu Bay shows a clear majority (64%) support retention of a short stay haul out and hardstand facility for boat cleaning and/or antifoul application.

Will The Ōrākei Local Board give due regard to the public input they sought? Will they protect the Hardstand’s designation in the Marine Precinct specified in Auckland’s Unitary Plan?

The Orakei Local Board needs to receive the feedback generated by their public consultation on The Landing and revise their draft refresh plan to incorporate a hardstand facility.

    See you Thursday.

  5. Storm Ciarán whips Western Europe, blowing record winds in France leaving millions without power

Recording-breaking winds in France and across much of Western Europe left at least seven people dead and injured others as Storm Ciarán swept through the continent, plunging vast numbers into darkness, devastating homes and causing travel mayhem in several countries.

Winds of more than 190km/h slammed the northern tip of France’s Atlantic coast, uprooting trees and blowing out windows.

  6. Postponement of the Altex Yacht & Boat Paint Auckland to Tauranga Yacht Race

It is with a mix of regret and careful consideration that we announce the postponement of the Altex Yacht & Boat Paint Auckland to Tauranga Yacht Race (Altex A2T) to the year 2025. This decision, reached through extensive discussions within the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club (TYPBC), is the result of various critical factors that have influenced our assessment of the 2023 event and its future viability.

Limited entries in 2023 were a significant concern, with the race experiencing a lack of participation from both Tauranga and Auckland. Only 4 entries from Tauranga and 7 from Auckland raised doubts about the likelihood of a significant improvement in these numbers in the coming year.

Competition and scheduling also posed challenges, as numerous competing events created a significant hurdle. Scheduling conflicts with key events like Sail GP, the newly introduced Harbour Classic, and existing races and regattas also limited available dates around March 2024.

The efforts of approximately 60 volunteers from TYPBC were commendable – they cheerfully and willingly invested their time and energy in hosting the event, and it was crucial for them to see reasonable revenue generation for the club.

Sponsor recognition is an important factor, with an acknowledgment of the generous support from Altex A2T sponsors; the decision to postpone aims to provide our sponsors with a more rewarding experience in the future.

Looking forward over the next year, we plan to diligently re-examine options for a spectacular return in 2025. We understand the disappointment this may bring to the yachting community, but we believe this decision is in the best interest of the event's long-term success.

We express our sincere gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and volunteers for their dedication and understanding. Let us collectively prepare for an even more thrilling Altex Yacht & Boat Paint Auckland to Tauranga Yacht Race in 2025.

    Fair winds and following seas,
Auckland to Tauranga Race Committee & Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club
