  1. Wrecked uninsured boats: Expensive clean-ups an issue for Northland

Two yachties rescued after they sailed into an island off Northland’s east coast must pay for clean-up costs for their vessel’s wreckage.

Lyle said the incident was the third this year of a type becoming a big issue for Northland.

Lyle said too many people were willing to risk sailing an uninsured boat while oblivious to the enormous costs they would face if their boat got wrecked - often more than the boat was worth.

The two men on the Moana Nui, understood to be from Whangaroa, were not inexperienced sailors but their boat was uninsured.

  2. Oops another Autopilot grounding!

HMNZS Manawanui sinking inquiry: Human error caused Navy vessel’s sinking, intital findings reveal

Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Garin Golding said the direct cause of the grounding was because of a series of human errors, resulting in the ship’s autopilot “not being disengaged when it should have been”.

He said the crew did not realise Manawanui remained in autopilot and, mistakenly believed its failure to respond to direction changes was the result of a thruster control failure.

“Having mistakenly assessed a thruster control failure, standard procedures should have prompted the ship’s crew to check that the ship was under manual control rather than in autopilot. This check did not occur. Remaining in autopilot resulted in the ship maintaining a course toward land, until grounding and eventually stranding.”

Judith Collins said the main thing was now getting on and sorting out the lessons from the incident, and not allowing it to happen again.

“This has really knocked the Navy for six... But I don’t think anyone can fault the Navy for standing up and saying this is what happened.

“We’ve had this sort of thing happen in the civilian world with ferries... I think what it says is that we’re not a country that is not going to shy away from the truth.”

  3. Pine Harbour Marina’s ‘abrupt power failure’: Berth holders decry fix-it fees

Berth holders at southeast Auckland’s Pine Harbour Marina are decrying a $876,000 fee after what the owner called an “abrupt failure” of the power supply system to more than 500 berths.

Ruth Doone of the Pine Harbour Berth Holders Association said her entity objected to being charged by Pine Harbour Marina Management, owned via Simon Herbert of Empire Capital.

But Herbert said the business was entitled to charge the fee after the mains power abruptly failed. Each berth holder at the marina had a contract or licence and those were long term and expiring in about 12 years, he said. The cable failure was unforeseen, so a special one-off operating expense had been levied, Herbert said.

Doone wanted to raise the issue in public because she said the fee being charged to around 550 berth holders was unfair and she also raised wider safety issues. People had reported receiving electric shocks when they had been working on the marina pier structures, she said.

That meant some boat owners had incurred significant costs due to boats needing power to maintain electrical systems. Yet there was no liability on the Pine Harbour business which leased the berths when the power failed, she said.

Nine years ago, interests associated with Herbert bought the 570-berth Pine Habour marina for $22 million. Pine Harbour’s marina was put up for sale in late 2013 on behalf of the vendors, the Drinkrow family. Empire also owns around 420 marina berths and associated land at Bayswater on the North Shore and the 80-berth Hobsonville Marina in west Auckland and has a dredging business.

  4. Looks like Burling has learnt some match racing.

ETNZ tacked on top of Britannia at least 5 times on the second beat.

Unlike last time when the let the Italians back in the game.

  5. Entries are down this year. Some people are blaming the cost of living crisis, but there are other factors, such as a lot of sailors in Barcelona right now.  Last years race got pretty gnarly around cape brett which may have put some people off too.

‘Small but quality' fleet for 2024 PIC Coastal Classic

100 boats are expected this year but last year 147 boats started the 119 nautical mile race between Devonport Wharf in Auckland and Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands.

“We’ve noticed that the economic situation has affected the ability for boats to make it to the race, but we have seen that before and expect it to recover when the economy recovers,” says Adrian Percival of the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club.“Quite a number of the sailing community have also used their leave up traveling to the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona.”

I'm just wondering how strict the the regulations are or do i need to go buy everything that's missing?

They just check you have a kit, not what's inside.

So up to you how thorough you want to be.

  7. What a nightmare! 😪

First the self steering broke disabling the steering, then the boom preventer broke allowing the boom to swing. Then the traveller broke, allowing the mainsheet blocks and traveller car to thrash about, destroying the cockpit including the furling controls.

This guy is basically reading out the Maritime NZ report, and has added some photos and video. This is what youtubers do these days to make money. Most of the images are of other boats/equipment, not the Platino, so could be misleading.

    Don't read the comments 🤮
