  1. Strong Persuader is a Senior 10. Did the SSANZ series last year. Nice yacht. Hope it is salvageable.

I thought I saw Psyche in Church bay on Sunday morning, and Bad Kitty down near Rocky bay in the evening.

  2. Rocna was number 1 about 10 years ago. Sarca Excel is now number 1.

See this thread, especially the tests by former crew member Fish in Arkles Bay.

Excel resets quicker than other anchors, and because it is convex comes up with less mud on it.

  3. Yachties take fight to save Auckland boatyard to the High Court

A group of Auckland yachties has taken its fight to save a public boatyard to the High Court arguing the loss of hull cleaning facilities would be a threat to biosecurity in the Hauraki Gulf.

The case centres around a controversial decision by the Ōrākei Local Board to terminate the contract of The Landing boatyard in Ōkahu Bay, in favour of a proposal to redevelop it into a car park and events space to be utilised by the Royal Akarana Yacht Club.

Andrew Barney of the rival Auckland Yachting and Boating Association (AYBA) said it had applied to the High Court for a judicial review, and interim orders that would temporarily hold back the bulldozers.

  4. YachtingNZ now getting involved:

Support urged to prevent 'biodiversity disaster in our backyard'

Yachting New Zealand is calling on Auckland Council to take immediate action to help prevent a biodiversity disaster in our backyard.

YNZ chief executive David Abercrombie is also urging Kiwis to support legal efforts against what he called “significant restraints” on antifouling capacity in the Auckland region further threatening our marine environment.

“The closing of affordable and fit-for-purpose haul-out areas around Auckland is a contentious issue and potentially a contributing factor to the negative consequences of invasive species and the demise of the Hauraki Gulf,” Abercrombie said.

If we have to clean up, then surely the marina should get issued with the same notice and have to "de-pest" their own b....y piers, which is where any infestation on my boat comes from in the first place.

Or maybe the berth holders/renters should be responsible for cleaning their own berths? A bit like mowing your own berm...

So the truth comes out - it is all a dastardly plan by the commercial boatyard owner to kill off more affordable competition:

The Royal Akarana Yacht Club is bankrolled by the Akarana Marine Sports Charitable Trust and Hyundai New Zealand, which are both headed by Howard Spencer - a keen boatie from one of Auckland’s richest families, whose own yacht is named ‘The Menace’.
Leading up to the vote on closing the public boatyard, the local board heard from the operations manager of Tamaki Marine Park in Mt Wellington who said any vessels affected by the Okahu Bay closure could be redirected to his facility. The marine park is owned by Tasman Holdings, which is directed by Howard Spencer.

Crikey one would think Liz could wash her 10ft trimaran at home rather than pay $1500 for a crane.

No. Timberwolf is a Cochrane 30, so approx 30ft long and 20ft wide.

Little Shoal Bay is under threat. Options for multihulls are becoming very limited.

  8. Charges laid over Enchanter fishing tragedy which claimed five lives

Charges have been laid against an individual and a company linked to the sinking of the fishing charter boat Enchanter a year ago.
In a statement, Maritime NZ director Kirstie Hewlett told RNZ both the company and the individual faced one charge each of breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act.
The company also faced a charge of breaching the Maritime Transport Act. The charges were laid last week.

And last Friday night up the offramp, little ole water drinker me felt quite smug , though I believe some of the more extreme rum racers resorted to walking

Same thing happened to me Sunday afternoon previous.
Are cops having a breath testing blitz on Westhaven boaties at the moment?

I have Digby Taylors book,  'One Mans Dream' and it is really a great read

I have just read it - yes it's a fantastic book. Then I read the sequel 'The NZI Enterprise story'. Not as good a read, but an interesting follow up.
Even in 1986 Digby was saying that the adventure had been lost, too many legs, too much info about other boats positions, and so he wouldn't want to do another one.

But later this next year they will revive the Whitbread race - it's called the Ocean Globe race: https://oceangloberace.com/the-race/race-rules/

  11. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) is facing a trading loss of up to $1.6 million in the current financial year and is “immediately” reviewing its operations in a hunt for savings.Auckland’s blue ribbon sailing club is blaming poor trading conditions caused by covid-19 and the impact of stormy weather in early 2023 for the projected loss of between $1.4m and $1.6m.However, sources with knowledge of the situation suggest the club is also suffering from membership losses caused by its decision last year to allow the ne...

When we refitted our 1020 I deleted one of the through hulls where it had a toilet inlet and hand basin waste outlet next to each other.

I have a Y just inboard of the sea cock now, below waterline and leading off to WC and Basin.

Mine has a similar arrangement. Can pump fresh water into the toilet by closing the seacock, and running the tap in the basin.
