That video makes me wanna move home tomorrow...

Its amazing to see that many boats out on a cool winter day. I know there are bigger events around the world, but 175 boats must be up there.

Took wife as crew, she loved the atmosphere of the trip out, the start and the beat to Tiri. Incredible sight. The video does a good job of capturing it, the iphone camera does a bad job!

  2. Yup, instant fine the selfish f*ckwits.

As Aleana says, this is not week one. People know the rules. They break them with intent.

Same to the idiots at burger fuel.

Personally I'm a fan of going all North Korea on their arses and shooting them, but my wife says I cant say that sort of thing in public.  So i better not say that here either.

  3. Maybe. Do some more research on reviews perhaps? Like i said, i love the jacket, excellent for the price. Its a big brand and seems to produce some decent gear in general.

  4. Got Gil OS1 stuff before RNZ jacket. Both Samin and I. We both rate the Jackets but hate the pants. I would buy another jacket, would never buy the pants again. Wet arse as soon as water on deck. Both of us. From new.

All 2:1 halyards I've used and seen terminate on the masthead fitting.

The mainsail on SV Hypothetical takes 50kg of load to hold it up there in just the shape the crew are happy with.

If that 50kg is on a 1:1 halyard it is on one sheave and the that sheave is handling the 50kg. The masthead fitting, containing the loaded sheave, is now applying 50kg of force downwards.

If that 50kg is on a 2:1 halyard then the sheave now has only 25kg on it but the tang where the end of the halyard is terminated has the other 25kg, between the 2 they share the 50kg load required. The masthead fitting is now applying 25kg x 2 of force downwards.

    Dont think thats right?

Bit worried to have a go at this, but in the 1:1 case, the sail applies a 50kg load down, the halyard the same vaule to hold it up there, therefore masthead has 100kg of compression.

In the 2:1 case, the load required in the halyard becomes 25kg each side of the main, and another 25kg tension, so maybe 75kg compression?

Im ssure ScottiE or Ed will correct me if Im wrong.

  6. 1. Had an amazing trip with the family up as far as Whangaroa, and then out to Barrier at xmas. Then came home and raced around NI two handed, so have had a pretty good summer anyway.

    2. Anywhere is good, be great to have a night away, even if its just to izzy bay.

  7. My raft was 18 months out of service. The torch didn’t go, the flares were at least 2 years out of date, and it went down quite badly too. Tried to use pump and it lasted 2 pumps and was stuffed.

Id go for the one the others got done... stops an arms race and the design was solid and is proven.

I think when your mast is that much taller than the other 1050s, the arms race is less of an issue.

  9. I had one i took to playcentre and inflated for the kids. They loved it opening and then played in it for a week or two. So if you are binning it, id take it off your hands and do that again!

  10. There was 3(?) 1050s done togther in 2009 I understand, and that enabled some sharing of costs? I also belive all the upgraded 1050s have the same keel design (from Greg Elliott).  So the 'old design' may be cheaper to utilise, and a different one may costs alot more  in terms of design.
