  1. Anybody got a rigger they'd recommend in Auckland?

     

    Problem I have is a 1975 masthead sloop rig, single spreader, power pole type mast, shakes like a bastard when no sails hoisted

    which is a) bloody annoying at night when its windy (like Saturday night in Bon Accord or Sunday when anchored while waiting

    for depth at river mouth B) not good for the boat at anytime IMO.

     

    I have consulted and been told that I should not worry... but I do because it just doesn't seem right.

  2. Is there a requirement for all boats to stay above predicted ice line or are they free to run the gauntlet? Does anybody know if that line been revised and if so - what do they do if Hugo is already the wrong side of the revised position? It would be bloody unfair to see him penalised

     

    Will be interesting to see what happens when (if) Hugo Boss can get to a starboard tack although speed doesn't seem to have been compromised too much by the loss of the foil.

  3. welcome Gert.

     

    Logically if you can deal with halyards etc without leaving cockpit its easier, and safer, but loads of boats have the same set up that you have described and it doesn't make it impossible by any means. I reckon single handing make you better because you have to anticipate/plan and do things before they are demanded . You got to allow more sea room to do things, you have to devise cunning little strategies.

     

    It always amazes me how much time simple things take - when fully crewed these things are done just like that, but no so simple when single handed.

     

    You'll have a ball, you'll cry in your beer some days but you will learn plenty and no matter which way it goes - well or not so well - its your doing.

  4. anybody know what the red dotted line on the tracker page is? Southern course limit or is it the expected ice limit?

     

    Impressive seeing Hugo Boss going so well - amazingly - despite having the damage. He must feel the bunny in a rabbit and dog race.

    Go the bunny, teach those onion & garlic chewin' Frenchies a lesson.

  5. interesting Edmond now second on distance to leader, better vmg, and slightly higher - could we see a leader change or is Hugo gonna gap it  - seems he is heading toward a favourable wind change and a foot on the escalator to the east.

    Cool tracker with the ability to 'look' forward in weather terms at least

    I think the guys 'head to head' encounter all those years ago may have occurred at the end of his dive and starved his brain of essential oxygen.

    IMHO the only mistake he made was putting up a big song and dance about it, and so now he is getting his chops busted.

    Break the law if you will and have a cool time experiencing something extraordinary by all means, but keep quiet.

    Whale? They should put the officials at the boat ramp, guns directed toward the land and keep the fecken mad men ashore.

  7. I've thought long and hard about this. Now I have a migraine so I am going with Maybe/Maybe not. If it was more likely and they did per chance

    collide, and both vessels sank or erupted into an enormous ball of fire with both crews going to their peril, who would know. In which case did it

    ever happen.

  8. Danpat - re the Ganley. I have a good friend who purchased a smaller Ganley from Whangarei, had it surveyed by someone up there and unfortunately it

    turned out to be a bucket of rust.

     

    I'm not aware of who the surveyor was so cannot/would not name names, and I'm not saying anything about the design - but be careful.

     

    If you go steel no matter the design make sure you look very very hard. From what I can gather from my friend repairs are an expensive process, and

    finding someone and a place to do the work is problematic.

     

    Having said that - the Pacemaker you saw looks pretty impressive.

  9. Anybody know of a diver in Weiti area who would give me boats' bottom a tickle and maybe put a new zinc on?

    Money maybe involved.

     

    Thought I had someone arranged a week ago but his gear has all been 'borrowed', and he says nearer to

    summer he will have it sorted (I think he is going soft like I am).

     

    I'd do it myself but all my scuba gear is knackered, I'm not really tempted to go and buy new kit just to scrub my own bum.

    Truth is I can't be arsed doin it myself.

    And wheels - why is the last one is dreaming re pricing? That seems like its pretty cheap price - aren't these things normally around the $1700 new

    for that size?

  11. Which is why you should never touch a woman until you meet her mum. And I am sure the selection process works equally strongly in reverse.

    I am like my dad, & can't understand what the hell my Mrs was thinking!
