OMG. Boy's Own Adventure. Great writing by Sophie Woodrooffe. I nearly drowned as a child. It was quite pleasant when I'd given up struggling and taken my first breath of water. CO2 poisoning they say is euphoric. Hope the victim is OK.

Don't go to Bunnings. The ozzie bastards did this to me when giving me "free" coffee grounds for my compost (full of plastic lids, discarded receipts, tissues, general rubbish) and then didn't want to know about it despite promising to look into it. Go to Mitre 10 which says it's 100% NZ owned.

Wheels, there is no refugee queue. That is precisely the nasty meme that the RW is spreading. Please stop spreading it. If a person seeking refugee status arrives on our shores they are entitled to have their claims heard no matter how they arrived. There is no queue whatsoever that we can say to them 'go back to where you came from and wait your turn in the queue'. BTW, last time I looked at the figures, most illegal migrants to NZ and Australia were from the UK and USA.

To add to Tamure's excellent post it's worth recalling that the notion that there is an orderly system which refugees MUST follow when applying is another part of the nasty rightwing meme factory. Wheels promoted the notion in his post and I hope it was just an error in understanding on his behalf and not a part of his belief system. These are important matters and it's essential that we don't make such fundamental errors in discussing them and in treating people humanely and treating them in accordance with our legal obligations. NZ is a tiny island stuck at the far end of the world; if we are to survive and prosper we need to promote a rules-based system of international law in cooperation with other like-minded polities, not tear it down according to the political whim of the day.

Shame that some people still don't want to respect the law. This thread has come in a nice circle. People who think Smith should break the law seem to the same people who don't understand that NZ has signed up, and good on us, to the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees.

Steven Novella of the publication NEUROLOGICA blog questions how the batteries will reach sufficient output to be as effective as NDB's developers claim. "This all sounds great," Novella says, "but there is a critical factor left out… What is the power density of these devices?" Specs from similar projects utilizing radioactive fuel, Novella suggests, show "the power density is extremely low, much lower than chemical batteries like lithium-ion. The engineers from NDB admit their power density is about the same as other nuclear diamond technology."
Typical marketing spruik. Claims proof of concept but not even a prototype. Far too early to tout this.

I watched this guy in an OCTender rowing. Maybe his oars were too short, but the sitting position seemed high and the whole thing looked much more awkward than my nice little ParkerCraft.
