  1. The cheapest marina we found in the south of France (med) was 57 Euro per night for a 15m berth. We did pretty much every marina along that coast. These were all non fingered berths without even poles. Just a dock with 2 lines forward. Average price was about 75 Euro and the most was 115 Euro per night. All the marinas were absolutely chocka full. Of course this was short term and in peak season so hard to compare with long term westhaven prices.

Prices varied a bit through the rest of the marinas between the med and NZ but generally not much change from about US$55 per night.

Yes westhaven is not a cheap place to keep a boat but simple supply and demand keeps prices high. With the marina full and so many boats on the waitlist gagging for a 12+m berth, the price was never going to go down.... As much as we would all love it too.

I have a 12m berth at westhaven, the cost is simply part of my boat ownership costs. If I can't keep the boat where I want it then it's time for a smaller boat.

However the statement about how the latest increase is due to marina facility upgrades is marginal at best. The only upgrades I see are for the general public rather than the paying berth holders.

  2. The pogo 1250 We cruised and raced with across the the Caribbean was quite a bit faster motoring with the keel down. The profile shape is horrible when the board is up and as mentioned before it really shifts the weight aft and drags the ass bigtime.

  3. LOL If it was that easy everyone would just stop and wait for the best forecast!

I have never suspended racing before in my life but we did it twice in one day in the RNZ race! Cost us the race but it was a seamanship call and at least we got the boat home in one piece.

  4. It was certainly a fun day out. Bit of an eye opener for me having not sailed a mullet boat before. They are a very different type of sailing and keep you on your toes the whole day.

  5. It was a pretty painful night with sail changes and tacks all night for very little miles covered. We banked on the overnight SW on the Coro coast but it only lasted for a few hours and actually filled through and stayed outside us for longer. Almost at whitianga with 7kts of northerly. Will be interesting at the next cross which will be after the mercs I think. Something tells me that we will all be in the same hole at some time before the finish.

At least it's a nice day out here.

  6. Most people are getting all the jobs done on the boats so we can do some stuff over the next few days. Looks like we will restart on Saturday. Super cool place.

Very challenging leg getting down here. The first half was great but the last part was hard work. Either no wind and a massive swell or 40+kts. It took us 3 days to cover the last 200nm. I have never suspended racing before but we did it twice on this leg and sheltered for a total of 13hrs. It's not a place we wanted to have a broken boat stuck in...

On a positive note, after breaking our prod some miracles happened and between NZ rigging, Gurrit, and AJ Reid a brand new prod was delivered to Stewart island completely free of charge for us and actually beat us here. Quite unbelieveable really.

  7. Buying abroad can be beneficial but I think Europe is the best place to buy and sail to NZ for the best possible price difference. You won't make money but you may be able to cover most of the costs of a 1-2year holiday sailing home. I just did it and it worked out pretty well for us as a family of 5 for a 1.5 year sailing holiday that didn't cost much.

  8. Formula, great to have you back out on the water!

I'm taking the Elliott 50 sportivo up and we are in island racing division 1 with ran tan and equilibrium. Thought you might be a better fit in there with us than windward lewards with the TP52s.
