Got the bottom of my boat scraped faired and primed. Also got a new boot stripe on(still got to take off the old top stripe and signwriting) and then got the most of the bits bolted back on. A BIG weekend..... Oh yeah and also had another baby boy (#3) last week.

Finally got the first coat of paint (interprotect) on the transom after all the modifications. Its come up pretty good.

No they are just glued and carbon'ed on there. They have the big support on the bottom and should be pretty grunty. I grinded right back to bare glass and also put a carbon patch under bottom of the support to make sure it doesn't push the bottom corner into the foam transom. Havent had a chance to really give them a booboo bounce test yet but did hang off them the other day with no movement at all. The boards themselves are 80kg foam, with a layer of 800gm glass on the top and 600gm on the bottom with carbon and extra E glass taping around the aft edge.

Big weekend.... Poker on friday night (didn't win), early start for the simrad on saturday and a late arrival home, sunday another early start for a drive down to Tauranga for the winter series race on the Mumm 36 'Whatever' with Colin an another very late arrival home last night just before 10pm and back at work this morning. Didnt see much of the family this weekend. Last weekend I managed to get my new duckboards glassed on the back of the marauder, turned out good, just got to sand the bog and paint the transom now.

Best thing on this thread so far...... I agree that paying a premium for a well maintained and fitting out yacht is often (almost always) the most cost effective way of doing it as you can chuck alot of money away doing up a boat and only get a small fraction of that back. But I have gone against that rule on my last 4 boats (including my current one) and come out just fine each time. Some people enjoy working on boats, I find it extremely satisfying to take something and make it better and am not afraid of a bit of hard work to get there. My first boat was in pieces when i got it, ke

I did a mission down to Rotorua to take my 3.5year old to rainbow springs and the luge. We camped with my brother and cooked dinner in a natural thermal oven, lamb shanks and veges, tasted like a hungi, it was great. Highly recommended. Needed a few hrs to cook though. The young fella loved it. Then back just in time for the SR nationals.

Man there were some loud people at Motuihe on saturday night.....

Ha classic! I spotted Bill out there but didn't know who was on the 2 to tango. You guys were getting along nicely. Shame the breeze crumped out at tiri. Sitting on my bean bag reading the paper and listening to some good music in the shade of the boom tent was pretty nice. Keeping the sun of the kids is also a feature. Mainsails are overrated!

Fitted pressure hot and cold water to the marauder, even have a shower on the back now!!

For starters just play with the forestay. Get a base setting for about 10-12 kts and go 5 turns on for big breeze and 5 turns of for very light, and adjust as nessisary for the in between breeze. You cant adjust while racing but do it between races. Allways know where you are with it, normally you just talk about it as '+1' as one turn on and so on and keep talking about it and where you are at all day. You need to go back to base at the end of the day. Have a small bit of batten with marks on it to line up if you loose where you are. This will make a massive difference to your pointing an

Did the first ever rum race on the SR26 'Motorboat'. Put the boat on the grid at stillwater and changed the prop then sailed the boat down on sunday to its new home in westhaven. Full marks to Bri-ski props for modifying my spare folding prop for me in a day and for very cheap! Got the pitch and diameter reduced and now its PERFECT.

you got any more photos from the finish boat? I saw some one had the camera on us (Rental) as we came into the finish out of control.

Man Squid, its amazing how much different (better!!) the cav 32 looks with the lower cabin. It really looks like whole different boat. Here is another shot of our 'live aboard'. My parents have now been living on the boat for well over 20 years and all us boys still call her 'home'. Also a shot of the familys whole fleet in hobart, the red one is my eldest brothers boat that he sailed to antactica (snow petrel) and just for squid, another brothers proa that they attempted to sail across the tasman. Video of that trip and on living aboard with kids here, its worth a watch. http://www.

We lived with 7 people (5 boys)on board a 45ft gaff rigged herreshoff for many years. mainly based in marinas around NZ but spent a few years just cruising, (Chatam islands, bay of islands, marlbrough sounds) and they my folks left with the 2 youngest boys in 1995 to protest against the nuclear testing in mururoa and never came back. Now days they still live on the boat but are based in tasmainia and love it over there. Our boat was pretty budget, without a word of a lie we could fly 8 sails at once and there were no jammers or winches (other than the manual anchor winch for a 50kg anchor...)

Sorry Tim I did promise you photos and a video. Here is all the footage put together. The stuff of you guys doesnt look all the exciting but in many ways i think that is really good, it shows how effortless the boat goes fast and just how much faster it can go, where as my boat looks like its at terminal velocity at around 18-20kts! http://www.youtube.com/user/BooBooNZ#p/u/6/TQRypEWiP_A

Here is my 2 cents worth. The question about how long a sail lasts is a hard one to answer, I guess you can kind of relate it back to car tires, it depends on the amount of usage, type of usage and quality of the initial purchase. Tires will last for a long time before they are actually to worn out to get you from A-B anymore, but your performance will be down, and they could blow out at any stage. Even when they fail a warrant they still have a year or so of use out of them before they are completely ruined. For sails its even harder to pin point how long they will last as there as so m

I would think half the issue is the old stretchy cloth, its allways goign to bag up when partially furled no mater what you do to it or how big or small it is. of course the bigger it is the larger the percentage of your sailing will be with it partially furled. modern laminates allow you to go with an almost full size #1 and still hold their shape when furled. we still recomend going with a #2 designed size which is normally 135-140% and raising the clew slightly for better reaching and so you dont have to adjust the car too much. half the problem is that Dacron physically lasts so bloody l
