Back in the day there used to be the Farr 38 Nationals.

We were motoring back into Westhaven on the Saturday afternoon (on Otway 3) and watched Jenny G getting towed in behind Alan's launch at 23kn. The bow wave was up higher than the boom! Amazing sight. Alan Gibb's launch was the Lassiz Faire with 2 x 1000 hp motors in it. Warwick 60?

I remember that too. Was an amazing sight. Think I was on Mint for that one.

  2. We had a really fun day on the Rogue II. Was a voyage of discovery for us learning what makes the boat go and what sails we actually have. No idea of the sail crossovers as we hoisted 2 old gennakers we had never seen and a new code zero that we had only checked to see if it fitted so the reach down to the noiseys was a bit painful changing between gennakers and code zero to find something that worked. The guys who had decent small flat gennakers made good gains on this leg. Watched Phil on the deep purple blast past us on that leg like we were standing still! They looked fantastic and rounded the noisies a few hunndred meter in front.

We lead our fleet for the whole race but they were never far behind. After the noisies we when sheeting on and headed upwind we heard a strange banging sound on the hull and thought we had collected a cray pot or something. Couldnt see anything over the side so did a backdown to clear it only to find the noise was actually the gas bottle banging the against the hull as the bungy holder was just loose enough to allow it to lean over and tap the hull from inside the locker. Big loss there but a simple fix and a lesson learnt. The beat back to the finish was great, flat water and 10-15kts with plenty of boats to try and stay ahead of. We played with sail trim and boat settings to find the best mode and made continual improvements in speed and height. Really close finish with the Salona 41 that resulted in a tacking dual for us to hold them off and the bigger elliott tourer Focus also coming at us quickly but we managed to take the win by a boat length. Handicap result was prety deep but overall we were really happy with the day and have a much bigger job list of improvements (and sails to make) to get the best out of the boat.

After party was good and we had a full boatload of people. A few improvements need to be made on the stereo system as we overheated the subwoofer and had to shut it down temporarily to let it cool down. We cant have this happen again as its a real party pooper! Another job for the list...

  3. That book looks like a great read. Might have to try and find that one. Maybe we should start a crew.org book swap thread? I have hundreds and I'm sure others have as well.

I'm off the the south island for a 2 week campervan trip next week. Hoping to check out both Greymouth and Westport. Havent been down the west coast by road since I was a kid, only a few times by boat.

Did kaikoura, marlborough and Nelson last weekend.

  4. Going back a few years....

    Alaska in 2001 on Shaman.

Kodiak island, Prince William sound, Kenai Pennisular and back down the inside passage through Juneau, ketchican and onto Seattle. Followed by a cruise down the west coast of the USA onto mexico and back to Hawai where I started the voyage.

  5. I know of a yacht currently just going past the kermedec islands on it's way to NZ. Passing right through the middle of that frontal system. Dont think it's going to be a very nice few days for them. Potentially extremely nasty even.

  6. A race is about picking your way through a series of challenges. The more challenges there are the more chances there are to gain. The boat that plays it the best wins.   Personally I much prefer a race that offers the maximum challenges possible.

  7. It's a great boat and in pretty good condition. Was no expense spared when it was launched and it was campaigned very well.  I know there is nothing major wrong with it but its basically padlocked to the hard stand until the bills are cleared. I dont think its very fair to be asking for the owner's situation and reason for sale right now on trade me. Maybe it's a touchy subject.

Let's be honest if you were a serious buyer for this boat you would probably not be asking your questions on trade me.....

Bryce had told people to contact him for more information and that's what they should do. Simple really.

  8. Plus 1 for what Brendan(kick) said about the solid glass on the bow and the tackline through the prod into a snout.

I reckon a machined acetal snout that sticks out another 30mm with 1 or 2  verical holes for the bobstay lashing and 1 or 2 horizontal holes for the internal tackline is your best bet.

Even if you dont run an internal tackline you can have a short strop with with a friction ring for your 1:1 tackline and the dead end point for your 2:1 with the fairlead aft being a low friction ring on your current tack line attachment. The tackline can just be a fixed length strop which goes into your bow cleat to pull the furler out.

Guessing the rusty hole is the bottom of your anchor locker? Probably to high to put the bobstay into the locker with a Dogbone. What's the hole below it or is that just a mark?

I will call you tomorrow to talk more about it.

  9. You can see out motorboat prod setup there. We had 3 tacklines. One at half prof for the upwind zero is where the bobstay attached, then one at 3/4 prod for the FRO(Fractional reaching zero) and then the one at the end for the gennaker which was 1:1. The 2 zero tackiness were 2:1 for the furler which is essential to stop the furler from twisting. They are both fixed length strips which were dead ended back to the prod to eliminate extra compression on the prod by having the tackling loading aft as well.

We made it bullet proof after breaking it at off milford sound  in the Round NZ race so we could push that bus hard all day long.

  10. I just added a hole through the bow on my boat for the bobstay. Making up a custom bobstay out of carbon and aramid wound between 2 points. Cow hitching the bottom through the hole and lashing the top. This will be retractable so the bobstay cant have any stretch as you need to be able to tension the bobstay with the prod out line.

On motorboat we had a D ring through the bow and the bobstay went to half prod as the angle was too tight to go to the end and added too much compression into the prod. This worked well as it was also the code zero point.

On the sunfast we had a dogbone inside the boat for the bobstay as it was in the anchor locker so didnt need to be sealed as well. That was the tidiest way as the bobstay just disappeared into the bow.

Are you running a fixed or retractable prod?
