  1. 70 deg in calm water, yes.

also interesting I thought that the 50 deg figure was "estimated" by the bridge crew, the instruments don't record beyond 35 deg.

  2. saw this on the RM site, re performance difference between single and twin keel:

What are the differences in performance between a single and a twin keel RM ?

VPP (polars) indicate differences of the order of 0.1 to 0.4 knots depending on the speeds and the wind in favour of a single In "speed tests" that we made with the two versions of the same boat, the single keel seemed slightly faster, but the difference was marginal.

In terms of behaviour, it is extremely difficult to feel a difference, even for skippers and experienced professionals who have often been "impressed" by the twin keel RM.

  3. yeah i think we were "lucky" that our power went out early, and so was at the front of the repair queue. out at 10pm back at 3am. seems like those that went out later have a long wait.

  4. oh yes they do look very cool, and you can get a fin if that's your preference. if i were in the market for a 200k 10m boat i'd definitely have a suss.

i think most people have given up on the lifting board idea as it doesn't really open up that much territory around here. all those bays you're dreaming of still have launches in!

  5. no experience with these boats, but the basic mechanical problem is the same as it's ever been: all other things being equal, you can't get as much righting moment with twin keels as you can with a fin.

  6. I had arranged to take some friends out for the day yesterday but checked the forecast in the morning and it said 20 gusting 30.

Then I checked the coastguard app for north cape and it was blowing 30 up there, I worked my way down through all of the stations and everywhere including Tiri and the Channel were blowing 30+ or close to it yet bean rock was 8 knots at 7am.

I canned the idea of heading out as thought that 30 knots would be down in the harbour in a few hours but it never really got over 20 knots all day.

Which was pretty much exactly what windy had predicted from last Tuesday or Wednesday.

I still thought it unusual for there to be wind a few miles north and not down in the harbour, was it because it was coming out of the east?

I would say yes, easterlies or thereabouts are often much stronger out of the harbour.

  7. I still say an open box rule would be better, unlimited number of hulls and appendages, just build the fastest (say) 50 footer you can. If it's not suitable for the race area, you won't win.

that would be fun to see at first, for sure, to see what they build. but the racing would probably be awful.

  8. Think of NZ. many (most?)  of the berths in Waikawa are used by CH CH and Canterbury boaties, Hamilton yachties use Tauranga, Whitianga, etc. for us in the North it is an hours drive to our berth in Whangarei etc. Not all have the luxury of a Westhaven or Sulphur point nearby.

sure. but berths at those marinas are quite a lot cheaper than the (relatively) central akl ones...

  9. Here's a little perspective:

All tide marina on South coast of Brittany - basically a sailing Mecca for racers... Awesome sailing, access to the Atlantic, a ton of places to go for overnight and longer trips. Sheltered, community owned (local body) marina up a tidal river. probably +500 boats up there, in a number of marinas and swing moorings, Grid and large ramps, scraping of boats on the grid etc...

    12x4m slip with finger.

    €1800...

    per

    YEAR...

i'm thinking that it's rather far from population centres, though?
