  1. We took our 2 month old away for 5 nights at Xmas last year on voom, modified GBE. They sail pretty well with less sail up, not normal race speeds, but quicker than your tracker. Definately not dogs. With baby on board, first reef at 10 knots, don't sail if 2 reefs required...

Ok, so a little bit of devil's advocate: that's going to leave an awful lot of conditions in which you can't go sailing, and the forecasts just aren't that reliable...

  2.

If you really want to see a waste of money in action i.e millions! then make some enquiries about the footbridge over Wairau creek at the sill of the marina. Just so the poor darlings from downtrodden castor bay dont have to walk another 400m to the beach!

i have to say i'm a bit torn over this one. it certainly would be nice if a reasonable compromise could be found. it's a lot more than 400m to go around, and having lived nearby for 4 months now i still haven't seen a boat going in or out of milford marina...

  3. aside from whether or not it's allowed, anywhere close to the city that's outside of a marina is going to be subject to all the fast ferry/container ship/etc wakes going past at all hours. they can be fairly unpleasant just folding up the sails, much less living aboard. i suppose it depends on what you're used to, though.
