2018 Golden Globe Race

The traditionalist in me is loving the concept of this. Not so sure about the reality of giving up 50 years of technology.

Recreating the original 1968 Golden Globe Race on it's 50th anniversary. Pre 1988 designed boats with a full keel, only allowed to carry technology that was on board RKJ's Suhaili, except for a few safety concessions. That means no electronics, not even a pocket calculator. Only comms allowed is VHF & HF radio except for confidential satphone scheds & satelite tracking back to race management.

What do you think? Awesome adventure or crazy madness?

Good to see the world once again developing an appetite for real adventure. Not to discredit the Volvos and other modern offshores, but the obsession over safety and viewer accessibility in modern events has, as the video says, had a real impact on participant accessibility, which is probably the most important aspect of any such sort of race. This event fills a niche that has been eliminated in recent years across a huge swathe of modern sports, because of the absurd cost of modern safety.

Awesome adventure, I say, but hopefully the wanderlust doesn't make people forget the Sunday Star Times race.

I reckon it's a magnificent idea and a challenge to end most challenges.

By sextant in the odd spot is going to prove fun. Talking about shipping lanes and so on, some of them are busy as now so you'd want to make sure you kept clear.

Any idea why there is a 6,500kg (pound??) minimum weight requirement? Is that to match his boat from back in the day maybe.

I agree MOD. An event that the anyone with enough enthusiasm and dedication could make happen, without needing ridiculous financial reserves or sponsorship.

Definitely one for the participants, not the spectators or sponsors. It sounds like those of us watching from the sidelines will only hear from the competitors at the start, mid-way and finish. It appears that everyone except for race officials, including friends and family, will not be getting much in the way of progress updates.

BP, with the apparent lack of coverage throughout the race I'm guessing the opportunity for sponsorship is somewhat limited so the competitors have to foot the bill. You get a refund of your entry fee along with a trophy if you finish before the cut off time though.
