TBoon 0
Hi there, I am looking at buying a 1969 Matangi steel motor sailer. What should I be looking out for with these boats? Cheers Dan
KM... 876
Oh a steel one with a full on collision bulkhead complete with grunty as submarine like door in the front....and a HUGE freezer? If so I think I know it and if it is the same one she has done some serious ocean miles under very good ownership. Don't listen to those who say they sail crap, they sail very well but like being kept more upright than heavily heeled. I don't know of any specific issues with them, all I've had anything to do with have been pretty well built and maintained. Good luck.

This is the one i`m looking at, https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/listing/2929183823?bof=JeJiKd1M She needs a bit of work for sure, and some rust in the bilge and under the stairs is an unknown. KM... 876
It's not the one I was thinking of but it does look pretty tidy. Nicely set up inside and a lot of room which is good. A good sized galley and tidy dunny, 2 key points to have when you also have a wife. As it is a boat there will be a list of 'a few things to do' which is pages long and no matter how hard you go never seems to get shorter But looking at how she is set up inside and the state of everything it suggests to me the owner is a a little fussy which is a good thing, anal owners tend to have less big game changing issues on their boats I see they say it was sandblasted in 2019 so you'd expect the hull exterior to be very good. Decks could do with a good water blast. So what's hidden in the corners is what you need to suss. This is where you find not being born into a family of contortionists means you're about to bend in ways you never imagined Oh she is on C56 Bayswater, I'll have a suss next time I'm in there which will be the next day or 2. splat
TBoon 0
awesome, thanks for the reply. She seems to be in really good condition. She needs a bit of paint and rust cleaning here and there. Next question, should I get a survey before I buy her? What would a ballpark cost be for a steel boat of her size/age?
Jon 155
Normal procedure is as follows Make an offer subject to survey, maybe just hull but can include motor and rig etc If accepted you pay a deposit, usually 10% Minor issues are accepted as ts not new your buying Major issues are either fix by owner, or you take the cost of repair off the price. You can only back out and get your deposit back if the owner isn’t prepared to fix or negotiate a deal acceptable to you. Survey costs are on you but owner often pays for the haulout. You can also ask for a sea trail as a condition of purchase. But all deals are a negation and as such you want to be sure that it’s the correct boat for you or you could be forking out a lot for a survey on a boat you don’t own BNG

No matter how good it looks, no matter how many receipts he's got, etc. etc.
