Tack Line loads

Recommended Posts

Currently got a short (700mm) carbon prod,  the tack line comes from the end straight back to the mast then on to the jammers,  problem with this is it runs right over the front hatch and that is really annoying,  I am thinking about diverting it around the hatch and then straight back to the jammers,  but the questison is how much extra load will go on the prod when the line is not running directly back but say a 20 degree angle from the prod to the first block that can straighten it up to run to the back of the boat.  Godd idea or really Bad?  Prod has no support at all in any direction including no bob stay

What about a low friction ring at the base of the prod then to the block as per your idea

Both angles will be only slight so probably very little resistance?

And if you need to crank it under load your onto the halyard winch

I have a fair bit of load on mine and ended up going for a rope eye as the tack line kept breaking the plastic fairleads. Works great. Expensive though.

I’m using a Selden sprit and 2:1 tackline that runs up to the middle of the sprit then turns around 30 degrees to the rope eye. I had trouble with the tackline lifting off the deck too due to a pretty aggressive reverse sheer and a gently sloping cabin top.

I am thinking a low friction ring at the base of the prod then diverting the tack line out to a check block on the deck along side the hatch then straight back to the jammers, doest sound like making that change will put any greater loads on whats already there
