Island Time 1,247
Also on the front page. It's the time of year where people have issues with their freezers, and fridge techs can be hard to get! Here is some info for people to help get started with DIY repairs and servicing on engine driven systems. It covers the basic components, what they look like, what they do, and what to look for. It also covers recharging and topping up procedures. Might be useful for some over summer! http://crew.org.nz/_/articles/refrigeration-engine-driven-systems-diy-r15 Cheers Matt
Priscilla II 397
Thanks for that Matt. It took me many years and dollars until I found a reliable reputable fridge tech. Man there are some crap artist shysters in that industry. Must be all that gas.

smithy09 50
One thing I would like to know Matt is how you get a hold of Refrigerant. I thought you had to be licenced to buy the stuff. Any tips? I'd happily invest in a vacuum pump and gauges if I could buy refrigerant!
Island Time 1,247
I bought a refrigerant bottle in Indonesia. Its nearly empty, but I've found a local fridge tech prepared to sell me another. Mostly you can get it if you tell them its spares for an offshore yacht...
Island Time 1,247
Following Smithy's comment, I've been thinking about the licencing requirements for refrigeration. If you want, the details are here http://www.rlnz.org.nz/ but from reading that, my take is that you do NOT need a licence for R134A, which is what I use. Therefore, there should be no issue purchasing it either! Here is a list of the refrigerants you DO need to be licensed for (see attached PDF file) You can buy a recharge/topup kit with r134A on trademe - but it may have the wrong connections for your compressor! see http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/other-accessories/auction-827518676.htm Remember that you cannot mix refrigerants - this kit is only any good for R134A systems!!
