eruptn 95
It would appear that batteries are the focus this week in Nature (materials science journal). Two articles giving some background: Lithium batteries: To the limits of lithium. Researchers are developing a type of battery that has ten times the power of conventional batteries. Link http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v526/n7575_supp/full/526S93a.html and Recycling: Lazarus batteries. Battery recycling can be hard, energy intensive and uneconomic. But soon, dead power cells could be more easily resurrected. Link http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v526/n7575_supp/full/526S100a.html
Beccara 25
the Li-Air tech is cool but it's biggest problem is really needing pure O2 at the cathode (?) end if my memory isn't completely shot. Moisture was still the biggest issue plaguing all the ?-Air battery tech and was one of the main reason zinc-air never went rechargeable The Lazarus tech looks promising aswell, Will have to sit down and have a good read of the papers behind it! Farrari 4
An interesting (for some) article on Lithium Air batteries popped up on IFL Science just recently http://www.iflscience.com/technology/lithium-air-battery-breakthrough-explained
Glsssbead 2
New battery tech headlines always sound great - but seems as if this one is still a long ways off... "Now for the bad news: this technology is still a decade or so away. The demonstration battery produced by the scientists still needs pure oxygen in order to charge – not something many of us have a ready supply of – and there's still the risk of the battery exploding due to the dendrites (spindly lithium metal fibres) created during the charging process. Eventually, these issues will be dealt with, but it's going to take a lot of research and experimentation first." http://www.sciencealert.com/researchers-have-created-the-ultimate-lithium-air-battery-with-super-storage-and-efficiency Quite happy with my Lifepo4 battery though.
