Ross 780 sail number, builder, any info please

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

there is a Ross780 over here in Aus that's for sale.

Seller believes it was built round 1981, and possibly in NZ.

The sail number is T3331 and currently named Lunasea.

Could anyone provide any history it ?

How does the sail number T3331 relate to its build date ?

I'm also very interested as to how it sits in the Ross780 production time line ?

thanks in advance

Great info, thanks.

My main concern is whether or not the hull and deck has had water ingress.

Is it true T3331 ex "Upmarket" could have balsa cored hull ?

And plywood cored deck ?

In general, has there been any common problems with these hull/decks, now being 30years old ?

Soft cockpit floors, side decks or hull compressions due to trailer rollers ?

thanks in advance

PS, my late grandfather grew up around Hataitai, so I have a kind of spiritual connection to all things NZ.

I remember someone good owning it in the late 80s. Maybe Rod McCulloch - Gisborne? No idea when it made its way across the ditch. The Hopwood boats seem to have lasted pretty well. All the potential problems you mention could exist. A lot of the trailers had bunks rather than rollers. But they are little boats and the hours aren't too bad to fix if there is a problem.

I think as long as you store them on the trailer there is no issues with water ingress into the balsa core. There was one that went to Dubai, and was then kept in the water full time. Apparently it became a "water core" or so I was told by the previous owner.
