Scotty3934 5
In a press release today. The boats will now race from Cape Town to an undisclosed ‘safe haven’ port, be transported closer to Abu Dhabi, and then complete the leg from there. The process will be reversed for the third leg before the race continues on to Sanya. Bummer for the race and all those involved however thumbs up have to go to the organizers for making the call and by the sounds of it the call was made after much discussion with all the appropriate authorities. Guest
A different opinion The route was stupid to start with, now it's even stupider, they aren't even going to sail the whole way. A while back someone on here summed it up precisely: Great boats, great sailors, dumb course.
Scotty3934 5
Ahh Must have missed that comment. Couldn't agree more though. Only good part for me (being selfish here) was the start as its only a short flight from here. Was all booked in to be there for 2 weeks over the start period but the cost started to get astronomical in terms of accommodation and everything else (car hire etc) so flagged it for 4 separate trips in 2 months and will just head to the finish now. Any thoughts out there of the best course & stopover points?

Guest
Plymouth, Capetown, Auckland , Rio, Plymouth. Why would you want to change it? It is a race, why not go the fastest route? Or change the name to the "Volvo Promotional Tour".

PaulR 3
Leg 3 CapeTown to Freemantle, Adelaide or Melbourne or Hobart would be better than going all the way up to Sydney, then back down again into Bass Strait. Maybe their world map was to small a scale. Valpariso or some other port before rounding the Horn would be good.

Not if you time the arrival in Sydney to be around 10 December, and time the leg to Auckland start on Dec. 26th, as a class/division in the Sydney-Hobart... make the finish line in hobart a gate on the way to Auckland...
