Beccara 25
I have spoken to RSM about this and the official method is new call signd and imsi numbers for each portable. There was nothing coming at the start of the year to change this either
Deep Purple 514
I just bought a cheap Cobra for my grab bag VHF. The Uniden is about the same price and waterproof but personally I like the option of being able to throw in a few AAA batteries when you need to. Murphy's Law dictates that anything rechargeable will be flat when you need it most.
erice 732
just thought to open up the back of the mh050 uniden sure enough a seemingly common heatshrunk pac of 4 x AAA slotted in there if and when trying to diy a replacement from individual batteries apparently a soldering gun should be used http://www.robotroom.com/Soldering-Batteries-2.html
Dambo 44
So I bought the Cobra HH350. It floats, it's submersible, it has plenty of power, the charging unit/base came with a 12v/socket charger so can be charged on the boat, I could buy a second battery which can be charged in the base unit without needing to be actually on the radio and (for who-knows how much money) you can buy a battery caddy which means you can use AA batteries - I'd probably buy a spare 'normal' and waterproof battery first. I'm happy.
erice 732
easy charging from the boat is great http://www.smartmarine.co.nz/products/vhf-radios/vhf-radios-handheld/63568/hh350-floating-handheld-vhf-radio-jis7-rated-5-wat/details/
