To reply to your question, no I don't remember this, perhaps because it was a decade before I was born!

 

Interesting article, I expect there would be a huge uproar should something like this happen now. A lot of the yachts setting out look fairly small.

My father-in-law was in the race in his 35' sloop Wakarere. Lost her forestay when the southerly hit and they retired to Kaikoura. His brother and partner in the boat never set foot on her again.

 

This race put Southern keelboat sailing back at least 10 years. It was the 1960s before you saw fleets of that size racing in, say, the Cook Strait Race. and I think the next race south (to Akaroa) took place in the mid 1960s.
