another myth busted

'survival of the fittest' refers to organisms which have adapted to have the best 'fit' for an environment; it doesn't refer to innate physical strength or dominance.

 

There is widespread natural tendency in the animal world to protect one's own young, even at the expense of one's own survival. This is usually toward a creature's own offspring, but can also extend to offspring of a larger group.

 

We humans have of course become self-aware, self-aggrandising, largely selfish creatures so do tend to want to look after ourselves more than other creatures.
