As the bridge comes down they sprint for the every decreasing gap between the two arms of the bridge. Funniest was when the bridge arms actually caught the mast, cut it off but left the top bit sticking up in the middle of the road and drove the boat below almost underwater, cockpit submerged. You'd by amazed at just how often they play this game and the near misses occur multiple times every day. There was café nearby and the waiters used to run a book as to whether a boat would a) go for it and come out unscathed, bail out at last moment or c) get pruned.
